Louis Rees-Zammit signs with Bristol Bears on return to rugby

Yahooa day ago
BRISTOL, England (AP) — Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit signed with Bristol Bears on Thursday in a resumption of his rugby career after an 18-month spell in American football.
The 24-year-old Rees-Zammit announced two weeks ago that ' it's time to come home ' after spending all of last season on the practice squad of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.
'Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me,' he said in the team's announcement. 'The style of rugby the team play — all about entertaining the fans and growing the game — perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field.'
Rees-Zammit had left English rugby club Gloucester in early 2024 to join the NFL's international player pathway program. He spent five months working as a running back with the Kansas City Chiefs before switching to receiver with the Jaguars, but he never made an active roster.
In rugby union, Rees-Zammit has scored 14 tries in 32 test appearances for Wales and was selected on the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 2021.
Rees-Zammit was considered one of the world's most exciting rugby players before leaving to chase an NFL dream.
He plans to pick up where he left off.
'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in the love with the game,' he said. "I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. I'm looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears.'

Hugo Ekitike does something only Darwin Nunez had done before on Liverpool debut

Hugo Ekitike became just the second player to register a goal and an assist on his Premier League debut as he continued his impressive start to life at Liverpool on Friday. The summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt opened his Reds account in the Community Shield last weekend and he followed that up with the opening goal against Bournemouth at Anfield. In the second half he claimed an assist, as his pass was collected by Dominik Szoboszlai, who did most of the hard work as he placed a neat finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The only other Liverpool player in Liverpool's history to claim a goal and an assist on their Premier League debut is Darwin Nunez, who achieved the feat against Fulham at Craven Cottage in 2022. READ MORE: Liverpool stance on Marc Guehi transfer after signing Giovanni Leoni READ MORE: Premier League explains controversial handball decision after Liverpool left fuming Ekitike's double contribution came after Liverpool announced another summer signing in the lead-up to the game against Bournemouth, as young Italian defender Giovanni Leoni joined from Parma. Liverpool new boy Leoni, who was in the stands at Anfield for the Reds' Premier League opener, said he simply could not say no to a move to Merseyside when he found out about the club's interest in signing him. 'I'm very happy to be here. It's a really great sensation and I'm honoured to be here,' Leoni told club media. 'Yeah, a lot [of excitement]. I'm so honoured. I was very happy [about Liverpool being interested]. When I saw this I said, 'Wow, this is crazy.' I'm very happy.' He added: "It's one of the best clubs in the world. It's not possible to say no to this club. Yes, [it was] easy – because it's one of the best clubs in the world. I didn't say no!" Liverpool is still keen to sign Marc Guehi before the summer transfer window closes after completing a deal to sign Leoni. Leoni has signed a six-year deal at Anfield and will go straight into the first-team set-up, despite being just 18 years old. He takes the number of center-backs in Arne Slot's squad back up to four, following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayern Munich at the beginning of July. There remains some uncertainty surrounding the position though, with Ibrahima Konate's current contract due to expire next summer, and uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Joe Gomez, who has not appeared in a competitive game for Liverpool since February. The addition of Guehi alongside Leoni would add some stability to Liverpool's defense, and the club is expected to accelerate its pursuit of the England international as the end of the window approaches.

Jaguars' Travis Hunter Sits Out Practice 'As a Precaution' With Upper-Body Issue

National Football League Jaguars' Travis Hunter Sits Out Practice 'As a Precaution' With Upper-Body Issue Published Aug. 15, 2025 5:14 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter was held out of the team's light practice Friday "as a precaution" because of an upper-body injury. When asked whether Hunter would play in the team's preseason game at New Orleans on Sunday, coach Liam Coen added, "We don't know yet." Hunter was on the field for the hour-long session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely. "That's what they're supposed to do when they're hurt," Coen said. "We want them to make sure that they're locked in, getting all the calls, understanding the call and being able to watch and execute it as well in their minds." Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Heisman Trophy winner also played both ways during a scrimmage Thursday and crashed hard to the ground while defending a deep pass. Hunter was one of 10 players held out of Jacksonville's practice because of injury, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. It's unclear if any of them will play against the Saints, leaving Coen with a tough decision to make regarding playing starters in the second exhibition. "There's a chance," he said. "We got to go get this injury report and make sure, because I don't really want to do too many, 'You're playing, you're not playing,' that kind of deal. ADVERTISEMENT "If we are putting [QB Trevor Lawrence out there], we got to make sure we're protected, and we have the right guys in front. Same with the runners, things like that. Just making sure that we're not putting people in vulnerable spots because we are injured." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
