Nicola Coughlan Makes Her Feelings Clear On Harry Potter Remake As She Raises £100K For Trans Charity
Last week, the Bridgerton star reacted to the Supreme Court ruling in the UK that the definition of a woman now only covers those assigned female at birth, describing the decision as 'stomach-churning'.
She told her Instagram followers: 'Like many people I'm completely horrified by the Supreme Court's ruling about trans people.
'To see an already-marginalised community being further attacked, and attacked in law, is really stomach-churning and disgusting – and to see people celebrate it is more stomach-churning and disgusting.
'So, I want to start a fundraiser for Not A Phase, who are an incredible trans charity in the UK, and I will match any donation up to £10,000.'

Nicola continued: 'I would urge you to donate and share, and if you are a cisgender person, now is the time to speak up and make your voice heard and let your trans and non-binary friends, and the community at large, know that you're there for them and will keep fighting for them.'
Within a few days, Nicola and her Instagram followers had helped raise £100K for Not A Phase, which is described on its website as a 'trans-led, nationwide charity committed to uplifting and improving the lives of trans+ adults, through awareness campaigning, social projects and funding trans+ lead initiatives', dedicated to 'creating a thriving, supportive space for the trans+ and gender non-conforming community'.
The Derry Girls actor also reposted an article shared on The Cut about JK Rowling's reaction to the Supreme Court ruling, which included a picture of her raising a glass and smoking a cigar, alongside the message: 'I love it when a plan comes together.'
The article was titled, 'This Is A New Low For JK Rowling', with Nicola adding: 'Keep your new Harry Potter, lads. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.'

Throughout her time in the public eye, Nicola has become known for her uncompromising and outspoken approach when it comes to causes close to her heart.
Last year, she helped raise more than a million pounds to aid children in Palestine affected by the conflict in Gaza, at a time she was promoting the most recent season of Bridgerton.
Meanwhile, she isn't the only public figure to rule out an appearance in the upcoming TV adaptation of Harry Potter.
David Tennant recently made a not-so-subtle reference to JK Rowling when asked if he'd be keen to return to the Wizarding World in the future.
Cast members already confirmed for the new Harry Potter series, including John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost, have been met with a backlash from some critics over their involvement, particularly as JK Rowling – whose own commentary on transgender issues has made her a polarising figure in recent years – is attached to executive produce the project.

Hundreds celebrated at Charlotte Pride following Supreme Court petition to review same-sex marriage ruling
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Pride events this weekend turned Uptown Charlotte into a party. Large crowds came out to the parade on Sunday to celebrate. Organizers expected hundreds of thousands of people in the city for the two-day festival and parade. 'It's welcoming,' said Rayonna Lee Gutierrez, who just moved to Charlotte this summer. 'It's a fresh breath of air. It's a relief to bring me and my family to an area that supports.' A man who goes by Smokey said, 'I appreciate it because it gives us a time to bring everyone together. Everyone feels a part of something.' People at the parade told Queen City News a celebration like Pride is especially important at a time when things can feel unsettled in the LGBTQ+ community. This week, the Supreme Court was formally petitioned to reconsider and overturn its landmark gay marriage ruling. LEGAL ANALYST | 'I am gay. I have a wife of almost five years, and yes, it does seem fragile,' Lee Gutierrez said. 'There's a lot going on all over the world. I feel like even if you're not gay, if you're related to someone who's gay or you're friends with somebody who's gay, it's definitely a sensitive topic right now.' Parade organizers say any social justice movement will come with pushback. 'Right now we're facing some upheaval and some attack and some targeting of our community, and so we just have to keep going,' said Meredith Thompson, Charlotte Pride's managing director. Andrea Boone is from Charlotte and marched in the parade. 'We have to celebrate everybody, and I believe that today Charlotte showed out and showed love to the community, and it was beautiful,' she said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. The entrepreneur and actress got engaged in July 2022 and married in an extravagant ceremony held in Palm Beach, Florida in April 2022. After three years of marriage, Brooklyn and Nicola exchanged vows once again on 2 August, with the pair posting photos from their special day via Instagram on Monday, and captioning the snaps, 'Only love'. For the vow renewal, Nicola had her mother Claudia Peltz's wedding dress from 1985 repurposed, with the new design featuring an off-the-should neckline and fitted bodice.
