All 12 Star Wars movies ranked from best to worst with fans stunned at 'worst'

Daily Record24-06-2025
All 12 Star Wars movies have been ranked by Rotten Tomatoes scores from best to worst, and the results may surprise you as the film often considered the worst is not at the bottom
Initially devised by George Lucas in the 1970s as an adventurous space opera, Star Wars soon escalated into a globally recognised cinematic saga, encompassing over 12 films and numerous TV series. This intense popularity ignited eternal discussions among ardent followers about which instalment is considered the best.
Rotten Tomatoes steps in to address this debate, employing their Tomatometer to arrange the films based on fan adoration. The scores are based on critical reviews, transforming into a percentage that signifies the film's rank, and it appears there's a significant gap between the fan favourite and the least celebrated entry.

Taking the lead with a stellar 94% is the inaugural chapter of the saga, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, which introduced audience favourites. Legendary actors became entrenched as cinematic icons through their roles, with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford embodying Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher portraying Princess Leia; evidently, fans believe the original was unsurpassable.

One critique mused: "Released in 1977, Star Wars: A New Hope was the theatrical launch of what would become a 48-year cinematic legacy-one that no one could have predicted at the time. What started as a space opera with some unknown actors and a wild vision ended up shaping pop culture and revolutionizing storytelling, filmmaking, and merchandising forever."
However, the most surprising revelation, as determined by Rotten Tomatoes reviews over time, is the bottom three films in the rankings. The 2008 animated film The Clone Wars holds the dubious honour of last place at number 12, with a paltry score of just 15%, reports the Mirror US.
Audience reviews brand the film a "failure" and "dumb," while others draw comparisons to the highly acclaimed TV show of the same name. One viewer even advises: "Just start with the show and erase this from your memory. You'll thank yourself in the long run."
Second from the bottom, with a 51% ranking, is a film that often splits Star Wars fans down the middle - the 2019 release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Despite the success of the first two films in this sequel trilogy, the third instalment seemed to fall flat and was the lowest-grossing of the trio.

One disgruntled viewer shared on Rotten Tomatoes: "This movie was horrible. It was easily the worst movie in Star Wars history. The second and third movies in the sequels wasted the opportunity that the first sequel movie set up.
"Rey has a horrible character arc and isn't a Skywalker. The saber fights were rigid and boring. "Palpatine somehow returned" and "I am the spy" are two of the dumbest things I have ever seen in a movie."
1999's The Phantom Menace, featuring Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor along with Natalie Portman, is often slammed as the franchise's low point. Yet fan ratings tell a different story, with a 54% overall score pushing it to 10th place - not quite rock bottom.
A review puts it succinctly: "Flawed, but still kind of fun" – rated at 3/5. The film isn't without its issues; occasional slow pacing and some clunky dialogue, yet there are elements that fans can appreciate.

What do black tears mean for Wednesday Addams in season 2 of Netflix hit?

Wednesday Addams has been left with black tears after experiencing psychic visions in the second season of the Netflix show, with her mother Morticia explaining their true meaning The second season of Wednesday has arrived on Netflix, unveiling a chilling revelation for Wednesday Addams (portrayed by Jenna Ortega) as she witnesses the death of her friend Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) in a psychic vision. ‌ Wednesday's visions often leave her physically drained and vulnerable, with the second season focusing particularly on the mysterious black tears that follow her premonitions of Enid's demise. Until now, the origin of these black tears remained unexplained. However, in recent episodes, it was Wednesday's mother Morticia (played by Catherine Zeta Jones, who recently stunned fans with her appearance) who shed light on their true meaning. ‌ Expressing concern for her daughter's wellbeing, Morticia explained to Wednesday that the black tears were a sign of her body being pushed to its extreme limits. Worried that her abilities might be overwhelming, Morticia advised Wednesday to stop delving into the mystery surrounding Enid's fate. ‌ Despite Morticia's warnings, Wednesday insisted she had her powers under control. Yet, Morticia offered a troubling glimpse into their family history, recounting how her sister, Aunt Ophelia, suffered from the same condition as her psychic abilities took over, reports the Mirror US. The black tears are not an expression of grief, but rather a manifestation of sheer exhaustion as Wednesday's body yields to her supernatural powers. ‌ While Aunt Ophelia's current location remains unknown in the new episodes, Morticia did present a book featuring an illustration of a woman screaming, shedding similar tears. The sketch could potentially depict Aunt Ophelia, as Morticia reflected on the trials and tribulations her sister endured. ‌ She expressed her fears about Wednesday following in the tragic footsteps of their family's history. Wednesday began experiencing seizures triggered by her psychic visions, suggesting that their physical impact on her is set to intensify. Morticia isn't alone in her concern for Wednesday's wellbeing; her closest mate Enid is also fraught with worry. The emotional strain induced by her psychic abilities seems to be just the tip of the iceberg for Wednesday.

Netflix fans react to Wednesday season 2

Wednesday fans all had the same complaint as season two finally hits Netflix with an epic Rotten Tomatoes score. The second series of the supernatural mystery comedy, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, hit the streaming service on August 6. 'Only 4 episodes? That's all?' 'Why just 4 episodes I ain't watching till it's complete.' 'watching or waiting for all of the episodes on Sep 3?' 'Only 4 episodes.' 'I've been looking forward to #Wednesday and rewatched season 1 in readiness… But I'm fed up with release schedules that split series in half… So, it looks like I'm waiting until September :( Time to get #appletv!' 'The new season of #Wednesday is split in two parts? Seriously #Netflix. This is the worst business model. One episode a week or whole season at once. Those are the only acceptable options. You'll get [expletive] numbers for this cause people will wait to binge. Not good enough.' 'Netflix, have mercy… stop torturing us like this… two parts for Wednesday S2 and an ending like that? really?' 'The new season of Wednesday is not even complete? @Netflix you are a joke.' But despite that, many have shared their rave reviews on review website Rotten Tomatoes. Those who have watched the show have given it a whopping 78% on the site. Others have taken to X to share their positive thoughts, with one saying: 'Wednesday season 2 was really [expletive] good and honestly already better than season 1 but 4 weeks for a batch you gotta be squeezing my [expletive] Netflix.' 'Wednesday s2 is good.' 'It's WEDNESDAY. Finally series two of WEDNESDAY is available on Netflix.' 'Finally getting to watch the long-awaited Season 2.' The much-loved series follows the life of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega). It originally hit our screens on Netflix back in November 2022. In January 2023, a second installment was promised but fans have waited two more years for the new series. Joining Jenna Ortega is Joanna Lumley and Steve Buscemi for the new season, as well as returning cast member Catherine Zeta-Jones.
