Irfan Pathan praised Mohammed Siraj as "an iron body with the heart of a lion" after Siraj's key role in India's six-run win against England, leveling the series 2-2.
Former India allrounder Irfan Pathan described Mohammed Siraj as a person with 'an iron body with the heart of a lion" after the pacer delivered one of the best spells of his Test career, leading India to a dramatic six-run victory against England in the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval on Monday.
With this thrilling victory, the Shubman Gill-led side levelled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2.
On the final day of the series finale, India needed four wickets to win while defending just 35 runs. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna's opening spell of the day shifted the momentum in favour of the tourists.
Siraj took the key wicket of Jamie Smith and then dismissed Jamie Overton in the same over, putting England on the back foot. Krishna supported with a pinpoint yorker that shattered Josh Tongue's stumps, bringing India closer to a famous win.
Despite suffering from a shoulder injury, Chris Woakes bravely came out to bat, keeping England's hopes alive. Gus Atkinson briefly reignited the chase with a defiant six, reducing the equation to just 11 runs. However, Siraj had the final say, dismantling Atkinson's off stump to secure a nail-biting win in dramatic fashion.
Irfan's elder brother and former India allrounder Yusuf Pathan also expressed his excitement over India's win in London, praising Siraj and Krishna for taking nine wickets between them in the final innings.
'One of the finest Test matches in recent times! This is what real Test cricket looks like. Brilliant spells by P. Krishna and Siraj. Well done, India! #INDvENG #TestCricket," Yusuf wrote in a post on X.
Legendary India spinner Harbhajan Singh also lauded the pace duo of Siraj and Prasidh for their efforts in the match and congratulated the team on a memorable tour.
'Brilliant from Siraj and Prasidh. What a win for us. Great Test match. Congratulations to every member of the team, @ShubmanGill. Tum sab ne jeeta DIL. Love you guys," he wrote on X.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan called the series 'incredible" and praised the grit and courage shown by both teams. 'Wow .. I haven't witnessed anything quite like that .. an incredible series .. #ENGvIND," he wrote on social media.
Siraj, who took a five-for in the final Test, was named Player of the Match for taking 23 wickets, the highest in the series.

Two-Time Champion Venus Williams Receives Wild Card For US Open Singles

Last Updated: Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams will become the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards, who was 47 in 1981. Two-time former champion Venus Williams is set to make her 25th US Open appearance after receiving a wild card into the women's singles. The 45-year-old American recently returned from a 16-month layoff after a serious health scare and was among eight women's wild card recipients named on Wednesday by tournament organisers. Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams will become the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards, who was 47 in 1981. Williams underwent surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids and missed most of the season. She made her comeback last month and became the oldest WTA match winner since Martina Navratilova at the age of 47 at Wimbledon in 2004, beating Peyton Stearns in the first round of the DC Open. Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has also won five Wimbledon singles titles to go along with her 2000 and 2001 US Open triumphs. She lost in the final in New York on her debut to Martina Hingis as a teenager in 1997. Venus also finished runner-up to younger sister Serena in 2002. The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2016 at the Taiwan Open. Williams will also compete in the new-look US Open mixed doubles next week alongside Reilly Opelka. France's Caroline Garcia, 31, was given a wild card into what will be her final Grand Slam before retirement. Her best run at a major came when she reached the US Open semi-finals three years ago. Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn are other wild card recipients, as is Australian Talia Gibson. On the men's side, American players Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch all earned wild cards. The final two went to France's Valentin Royer and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate. The US Open singles main draw begins on August 24. Steven Dias appointed Jamshedpur FC head coach on interim basis

Jamshedpur, Aug 13 (PTI) Jamshedpur Football Club has confirmed that Steven Dias will take over as head coach of the first team in the interim following the departure of Khalid Jamil, who has been appointed India head coach. Steven, who has been serving as assistant coach, has been working closely with the first team and has played a key role in its progress across both the Indian Super League and the Super Cup. His familiarity with the squad, coaching philosophy, and ongoing projects makes him the ideal choice to lead the team into the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup 2025. Steven Dias shared his excitement,"Following Coach Khalid's remarkable achievements, I'm committed to giving my best and driving success for the club. It's a huge responsibility, and we'll need to stay focused and work hard to meet the upcoming challenges." Jamshedpur FC stands at a critical juncture in the tournament, heading into the knockout stage after a flawless group phase where the team won all three matches. Before joining Jamshedpur FC he was the head coach of Ambernath United where he guided the team to the final round of the I-League Second Division, narrowly missing out on the title after needing just a draw against Delhi FC. Under his leadership, the club lifted back-to-back undefeated Mumbai FA Elite Division titles in 2022 and 2023, as well as consecutive Mumbai Women's League titles. Steven also helmed the Maharashtra Santosh Trophy team, leading them to the final round of the 2022-23 season while recording the most goals scored in the tournament. SA all-rounder Corbin Bosch penalised for Level 1 breach of ICC Code of Conduct

Last Updated: South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel South Africa's fast bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch has been penalised for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against Australia on Tuesday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that one demerit point has been added to Bosch's disciplinary record. The incident took place in the 17th over of Australia's innings when Bosch, after dismissing Ben Dwarshuis, gestured towards the player's dugout in a way that could have provoked an aggressive reaction from the batter. Bosch was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match." He accepted the sanction proposed by the ICC match officials, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. In the match, South Africa was lifted to an impressive 218/7 by Dewald Brevis, who hit a blistering unbeaten 125 off 56 balls, the highest individual score by a Proteas batter in T20Is. Playing in just his ninth T20I, Brevis, 22, reached his century in just 41 balls, becoming the youngest men's T20I centurion for South Africa. He also recorded the second-fastest men's T20I hundred for his country. In reply, Tim David's 24-ball half-century kept Australia in contention of chasing the massive total. However, three wickets each from Bosch and Kwena Maphaka bowled the hosts out for 165, securing a 53-run win for South Africa. The deciding match of the T20I series will be played in Cairns on Saturday. The game will also be the first-ever Men's T20I at Cazalys Stadium, expected to attract a sell-out crowd of 10,000 spectators. After hosting the ODI series opener on August 19, Australia and South Africa will head to Mackay for the final two matches on August 22 and 24, respectively. This will also be the first time the Australian men's team plays an international match at the Great Barrier Reef Arena.
