Forrest still loves life at Celtic and finds prospect of retirement 'scary'

STV Newsa day ago
James Forrest says he is still enjoying every moment with Celtic but admits it's scary to contemplate the idea of retirement.
The 34-year-old has won 13 league titles, seven Scottish Cups and six League Cup winners' medals in a long and storied career with Celtic.
He made a goalscoring debut in 2010 and with a last-gasp equaliser against St Mirren in the final league game of last season made it 16 successive campaigns that he's scored in.
The winger's contract expires at the end of the season and while he is calm about the situation, he is beginning to contemplate what comes next.
'I think every player is different,' he said. 'I think it's been good for me over the years and the club has always just worked well.
'But obviously I'm getting older and I really just want to enjoy it, keep working hard and keep trying to contribute to the team when I can
'When that discussion comes. I honestly just want to keep trying to enjoy every day.
'Obviously I've loved it here. I've given everything I've got to Celtic and I want to continue to do that.
'It's been a really good fit up to now and I'm just going to keep enjoying it while it lasts.'
The attacker has been a one-club man in his career so far and didn't quite rule out the prospect of playing for another team if he wants to extend his career but says he still doesn't have a clear idea of what the future will hold.
'I have thought about it a wee bit,' he said. 'I left school at 15, 16 and that's all you have ever done and all you've ever known.
'So I want to keep playing for as long as I can, but yeah, it's scary.
'I've played with players who have retired and different people go down different paths once they finish but I don't really know what I'll definitely do after but I think it's scary because it's what I've done for 20-plus years and it's been unbelievable, it's been really really good.
'I have given everything to Celtic and I will continue to do that until my contract is up and they might shove me out the door anyway, so we will see what happens.'

St Mirren have 'one of the best midfields' in Scotland

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson believes he now has one of the best midfields in the Scottish Premiership after re-signing Australia international Keanu Baccus. The 27-year-old returns to the Paisley club - where he made 72 appearances in his previous spell - having spent last season with Mansfield. "If you look at our midfield players, Liam Donnelly has still not featured really with injury, but the strength we've got in there is, for me, arguably one of the best midfields in the league now," Robinson said. "Which is amazing to say as manager at St Mirren."I genuinely believe, perhaps outwith Celtic, we've got five really, really good players in midfield. Killian Phillips, who is on fire at the moment, a full international footballer. Keanu Baccus, a full international footballer, captain Mark O'Hara, Liam Donnelly, Oisin Smyth."I believe we've got really, really good midfield players that can match anybody on their day."Baccus was keen to return to Paisley for family reasons and also boost his chances of playing in the World Cup after becoming the first St Mirren player to achieve that feat back in 2022 with Australia. "We stay in touch with all the players that leave the football club, so we knew there may be an opportunity that we could get Keanu back again," Robinson added. "When we found out, we moved straight away."He's a very, very good addition to the squad. Keanu knows exactly what way we play. He knows the expectations at the football club now. So he'll slot right in there and be a big part of the squad."He's found a home here. He's loved here. Fans love him, the staff love him, the players love him and he got a brilliant welcome when he came in the door from the boys."Sometimes things just work for you, sometimes you just fit in certain places and we believe Keanu works very well at this football club and we aim to get him back into that international squad."

"That's the reality of this time of the year."We're hoping that we can conclude some deals and improve the squad."New striker signing Shin Yamada has yet to make his debut, with the absence of Kyogo Furuhashi, who was sold to Rennes in January, still being Celtic have also lost Jota to a long-term knee injury and sold fellow winger Nicolas Kuhn to if he could understand supporters' frustration, Rodgers said: "I think the board have shown over many years that the work will get done."And, obviously, as a group that run the club and have run it so well for so many years, they have to get what they will feel is the best value for the players."Of course, as coaches and managers and supporters, you want the best players."But, ultimately, the club will be run in a way that makes sure that both the best players and the best value is there to be made. And that sits above me, that's something that clearly does."Rodgers said "I really don't know" when asked if new signings might appear in the 10 days before Celtic's Champions League play-off first leg against either Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava, who meet again in Bratislava next week with the Kazakh side 1-0 up.
