The Blind Date reboot already sounds like it's trying too hard

Metroa day ago
Even in a crowded field of TV dating shows, I was initially elated to hear Blind Date was returning to screens 22 years after Cilla Black said her final 'ta-ra'.
Paul O'Grady briefly revived the classic dating show for two series in 2017 on Channel 5, but it never managed to set the stars alight and remains a largely forgotten jewel in his showbiz crown.
Because it was Cilla's version that captured the zeitgeist of dating shows in the 90s and early 00s.
Her enthusiasm and unbridled camp was totally mesmerising to me.
Teamed with family-friendly sass from 'our Graham' and a format of one singleton picking a date from a panel of three strangers hiding behind a wall that never got tired, I loved Blind Date more than I've ever loved any of the countless dating shows that followed.

Once a date had been chosen, they'd be whisked away to a holiday selected by producers, which ranged from two days basking in golden sands and luxury in Antigua to hiking in Bognor Regis.
Now, Disney+ has confirmed its Blind Date reboot. I was originally ecstatic, until I realised it actually sounds nothing at all like the original.
In an announcement on Monday, the streaming service said: 'The new series will begin in a secret location, where contestants must choose between three potential suitors, hidden from view behind the legendary Blind Date wall.'
So far so good.
'With a host of unique, innovative and head-turning format twists, our daters will see if forever love can truly grow as they spend the summer living together but potential new partners are always lurking behind the wall…'
That might sound good – but it doesn't sound like Blind Date.
Essentially it's Married At First Sight on an island, which sounds like a carbon copy of Davina McCall's upcoming BBC dating show, Stranded on Honeymoon Island.
Maya Jama is also rumoured to be presenting — which presumably means she's leaving Love Island to front… almost exactly the same show but with a Disney budget and paycheck.
But who's it for ? Everything about its new format sounds unoriginal and unappealing to the fans who care. Disney's pitch does little to set Blind Date 2026 apart from the 1,000 other dating shows cluttering up streaming.
And with Love is Blind UK and Married at First Sight particularly at the top of their game, I'm struggling to see what the new Blind Date can bring to an already crowded market.
Except, of course, its heritage as 'the most successful dating show of all time.'
Which makes you wonder why, if it was so loved, Disney is bothering to tinker with the format at all.

It certainly doesn't seem like the new version of the show will feature the studio audience who were such a big part of the original's success.
Who can forget their oohs and ahhs at the latest cheesy chat up line, or their gasps when Cilla exposed one contestant with the immortal line 'she's a journalist, ladies and gentleman'?
Granted, by the time Cilla's Blind Date ended, its one viewership of sometimes 18million viewers dwindled to around 5million by 2003; people had grown tired of Blind Date.
Pop Idol and then The X Factor completely changed the scale of Saturday night television and suddenly Cilla's kitsch studio with a makeshift sliding wall didn't cut it compared to the blockbuster budgets Simon Cowell was throwing at finding the next great popstar.
Two decades later though, big money TV has become strangely tired.
There's a glaring gap for Blind Date's simplicity on Saturday nights. Plonk it just before or after Strictly and you've got an unbeatable combo of easy television for the whole family.
It's relatively gentle approach would also be in contrast to the last primetime Saturday evening dating show – Take Me Out – which was comparatively brutal with its loud 'lights-off' rejection.
Dating shows today feel exclusively for young audiences. At 37, even I feel way too old to watch Love Island and while Love Is Blind UK was surprisingly excellent, it's still sexy and young(ish).
So much of Blind Date's charm wasn't remotely sexy. And if it did need to be modernised, why not look to First Dates instead of Love Island and MAFS?
After 12 years, the show is as wonderful and beloved as ever — proof that simplicity works. Its ability to show that anyone can find love, no matter their story or insecurity, gets me right in the gut every time.
Blind Date could be First Dates with a bigger budget, in a bigger slot, for a bigger audience.
Saturday night TV is in desperate need of something like that. More Trending
I wouldn't have bet on Blind Date being relevant again — but look at the success of Gladiators.
That era of 90s Saturday-night telly was never bettered, and it's still drawing in new generations now. But crucially, the format has barely changed.
This feels like such a missed opportunity for Blind Date; to instead churn out another deeply unoriginal dating show.

Disney+ can still change course and bring us the old-school Blind Date we need. And that would be a nice surprise surprise.

'Oasis split the day I tried to see them - I'll take my chance on reunion tour'

It was 16 years ago that Oasis dramatically split up – the biggest British band of their era shocked fans everywhere when they called it quits. Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel were due on stage at V Festival 2009 in Chelmsford when fans discovered that the band had unexpectedly pulled out as a result of Liam coming down with laryngitis. Oasis was dead just a few days later. In the crowd at Chelmsford was 31-year-old Oasis enthusiast Tom, who was one of millions delighted when Liam and Noel patched things up in 2024 and announced a reunion tour. A string of live dates was announced for the summer of 2025, with the first of those coming on Friday, July 4—a 75,000-capacity sold-out show at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. Metro spoke to Borehamwood native Tom to see whether he forgives the Manchester Britpop band after all these years or if he still looks back in anger on the day they broke his heart. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 23, 2009, V Festival was proceeding just like the 13 successful previous years… but soon, disaster struck. Tom explained: 'I was incredibly excited. V Festival was my first ever festival. I went with my sister and my parents and had two of my favourite bands headlining—The Killers, then Oasis.' Still on a high from seeing the Mr. Brightside hitmakers the night before, Tom began Sunday eager for Oasis to cap the weekend off—only for the bad news to make its way to him just 10 minutes into the afternoon. 'It was devastating. Whispers went around. We even saw a guy draw an 'N' before the Oasis logo on his shirt, so it read NOASIS. Then the official message came through—Snow Patrol were now headliners instead. 'Everyone rushed to see Lady Gaga instead. It got so busy they had to close it off, so we didn't see her either—we were stuck with Snow Patrol.' Now, 16 years on, Tom's been lucky enough to land tickets not just for the Wembley Oasis show but for their homecoming show at Heaton Park as well, just 10 miles from their birthplace of Burnage. For the eighth year, 150,000 festival goers will descend on Glasgow Green from 11-13 July to see the liked of 50 Cent, Gracie Abrams and Biffy Clyro, and you could be there! Metro has teamed up with Rockstar Energy presents TRNSMT Festival to offer four VIP tickets to one lucky winner. For a chance to win this massive music prize, simply enter your details here. You have until midnight on Sunday 6 July 2025 to enter using the form below. Entrants must be 18+. Good luck! T&Cs apply*. Click here if form is not loading. * Open to legal residents of Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) aged 18 or over. Promotion opens at 18:01 BST on 2 July 2025 and closes at 23:59 BST on 6 July 2025. The promotion is free to enter; however internet access is required. Entrant must visit and when prompted by the form, submit their name, email, telephone number, date of birth and postcode. Acceptance of the terms and conditions is necessary to enter the promotion. There will be one (1) winner. The winner will win four (4) VIP weekend tickets for TRNSMT Festival, running from 11th – 13th July 2025 at Glasgow Green, in Glasgow ('Prize'). Proof of age and photographic ID are required for entry for all guests (the guests of the winner must be at least 16 years old at the time of entry). The Prize, including entry and attendance at TRSNMT festival, is subject to and governed by the Promoter's full ticket terms and conditions. 1 prize available. 1 entry per person. Full T&Cs apply, see here. He can scarcely believe it. 'I always hoped [a reunion] would happen one day. But even now it still feels like a dream. In seven days, I'll be standing in a field with my mum, my sister, and my fiancée, crying my eyes out to Champagne Supernova.' Somebody who was lucky enough to catch the Importance of Being Idle chart-toppers was 31-year-old Craig, who saw one of their last-ever shows before the split. Driving down from his hometown of Perth, Scotland, Craig caught Oasis at Edinburgh's Murrayfield, paying just £44 to see them alongside Reverend and the Makers, Kasabian, and The Enemy. Those were the days. 'Seeing them in 2009 was absolutely incredible; the tickets were actually my 15th birthday present from my dad—they were an incredible surprise, and it really was an incredible gig. As a young 15-year-old kid, it was absolutely life-changing.' But did he know that Oasis was just 15 more gigs away from the very end? 'I didn't know it was nearly the end, [but] I remember Liam making a comment on-stage to the sound guys—he wasn't best pleased. There had been power issues at the Manchester show [the week before]. 'Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, it felt like they were done. The chemistry between Liam and Noel was off. It makes even more sense when you hear about them travelling separately.' Craig was hurt when Oasis called it quits just weeks after the Edinburgh show, but seeing offshoot bands like Liam's Beady Eye and Noel's High-Flying Birds live put a band-aid over the wound. In the 16 intervening years, Craig 'didn't think they'd ever play live together again, at least not in the UK'—but now he gets to pass Oasis on to the next generation in his family. More Trending 'My cousin, who's five years younger than me, when I was a teenager, I kept saying to him that Oasis are the greatest band ever. We've seen Liam and Noel solo, and it'll come full circle when we see Oasis next month.' Before Craig catches the Gallaghers at Murrayfield, Tom will get to live out his dream of finally seeing Oasis in the flesh, barring any last-minute fallouts or laryngitis issues. What will it mean to finally see them? '[The comeback shows] mean everything. I was born in 1994, so my mum and me waited 15 years to see them together. That 15-year wait has now become a 31-year wait. 'I still won't believe it until I see them walk on stage together at Heaton Park.' Got a story? Vanessa Feltz guzzles a glass of custard live on TV in nod to THAT outrageous magazine cover - and reveals truth about friends' fears for her fluctuating weight

Vanessa Feltz guzzled custard live on her Channel 5 daytime show in a hilarious nod to a magazine cover that claimed she regularly drank it - which left her friends apparently fearing for her. The TV host, 63, covered a newspaper story on Friday's edition of the show in which a war veteran claimed the sweet treat was the secret to his long life. Following this, she then told viewers: 'Now you might not remember this but you might remember one of the most infamous headlines about me claimed that I was addicted to custard that friends feared I was drinking custard, again. 'That was the front page headline, friends fear she's drinking custard again.' Vanessa added: 'Now it wasn't true, I had put weight on, but I was always putting weight on anyway, it was probably donuts or apple strew or chocolate moose, it definitely wasn't drinking custard. 'But if drinking custard means I might live to be 106, I reckon we should try it, we should try it right now.' Vanessa then urged her contributors on the adjacent pink sofa to reach for their glasses of custard as she clenched her glass. The star toasted to good health before knocking back half the glass live on air as she joked: 'Friends fear we're drinking custard again.' Vanessa then pondered if custard can soon be substituted for healthy green juice shots that have become widely popular. The mum-of-two previously revealed the secret behind her weight loss after admitting she has battled with her body image for decades. Vanessa has been candid about her challenges with her weight in the past, having fluctuated dramatically between sizes 10 and 22. She described the 'turmoil' of dieting as soul-destroying, with her weight previously yo-yoing for 18 month periods as she came on and off eating plans. But in recent times, Vanessa has managed to sustain a slim figure. Speaking to OK! Magazine, she said: 'What have I been doing? I don't know! I think it's because I'm working so much, to be honest. 'I'm just working seven days a week. I've got the new Vanessa show on Channel 5 every day at 12.30pm. Then I do LBC Saturdays and Sundays. 'Being busy and on my feet must be contributing to how I look.' It was only a couple of years ago that Vanessa's cheating ex-boyfriend, Ben Ofoedu, branded her a 'chubby blonde' in a cheap shot after their breakup. But just months later, the presenter was showing off a new-look and impressive figure, having lost 2st thanks to what she called a 'broken heart diet'. Vanessa admitted that following the split, which arose after allegations of Ben cheating were leaked to the press, she 'hadn't eaten for months'. She first slimmed from a size 22 to a size 10 between 1999 and 2000 but later put the weight back on. She lost 2st in 2004 but gained it again, and in 2007 she dropped 3st but it all returned and she ended up back at a size 22. Eventually in 2010, Vanessa had a gastric band bypass, which she said helped to keep her at a more steady weight. Vanessa did, however, reveal in late-2024 that she 'would not have had the surgery' if she had known about Ozempic. Ozempic is a drug used to manage Type 2 diabetes, which slows down how quick food is digested. A number of celebrities have admitted using the drug to bring about weight loss, including Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey and Sharon Osbourne. Vanessa airs weekdays from 12:30pm on Channel 5.
