Stephen Jones says Cowboys don't feel need to take a running back or wide receiver
Wide receiver was a popular choice in mock drafts and there have been calls for the Cowboys to add a dynamic rookie running back as well. The latter position was the subject of a question during executive vice president Stephen Jones's Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
Jones was asked if the team felt it needed to come out of the draft with a running back and he said he doesn't see any position as one that must be filled before the end of the seventh round.
'I like what we did in free agency,' Jones said. 'That's one of the things we like to accomplish in free agency is get some guys in and feel like we did that. We don't really feel like we have to pick a position anywhere in terms of our depth. That's how you make mistakes when you say 'hey, we've got to draft for need here.' I think you make mistakes that way. Don't get me wrong, it comes into everybody's pick when you're looking at players but we don't feel the need to have to reach and take a player down the line just because we need a position.'
Jones reiterated most of that view when asked if that extended to wide receivers as well.
The Cowboys signed running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders as free agents and they added Parris Campbell to their receiving corps.

Lining up primarily as a left defensive end, Ezeiruaku has shown a complex rush attack that is far beyond his years. He's also displayed the ability to set the edge, looking like he's ready to take on a starting role sooner rather than later. Dallas brought back Dante Fowler, who left for a season in Washington, and the expectation was that he'd be starting opposite Parsons, but that may not be the case and if it is may not be for long. The Cowboys also signed Payton Turner, a former first-round pick like Fowler, as veteran depth. They join last year's second rounder Marshawn Kneeland as Parsons' supporting cast. The fallout from some of Jerry Jones' most recent comments continued into Sunday after the Cowboys owner took aim at Dez Bryant, JAY-Z and Roc Nation for being the reason why he hasn't wanted Micah Parsons' agent involved in the linebacker's contract negotiations this offseason. Speaking to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at Dallas' training camp, Jones called out the former star receiver and his representation for how they allegedly handled business back in 2015. "[W]hen we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found," the 82-year-old claimed. "JAY-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. JAY-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours. He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time.' And what did I say? I said, 'I'm going to call you [when I have a problem].' He quit taking my call." That statement not only led to an aggressive response from Bryant on X. Who said: "JERRY JONES I DONT THINK ITS SMART TO MENTION MY NAME I KEPT QUIET ABOUT A LOT OF UNFAIR S—T.. ON SOME G S—T… WE CAN HAVE STORY TIME IF THATS WHAT WE ARE DOING." But it also received an official statement from JAY-Z and Roc Nation who shot down Jones' recollection as both "false" and "comical."
