Stephen Jones says Cowboys don't feel need to take a running back or wide receiver

NBC Sports25-04-2025
The Cowboys took guard Tyler Booker in the first round on Thursday night, but there was a lot of talk about targeting a different offensive position leading into this year's draft.
Wide receiver was a popular choice in mock drafts and there have been calls for the Cowboys to add a dynamic rookie running back as well. The latter position was the subject of a question during executive vice president Stephen Jones's Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
Jones was asked if the team felt it needed to come out of the draft with a running back and he said he doesn't see any position as one that must be filled before the end of the seventh round.
'I like what we did in free agency,' Jones said. 'That's one of the things we like to accomplish in free agency is get some guys in and feel like we did that. We don't really feel like we have to pick a position anywhere in terms of our depth. That's how you make mistakes when you say 'hey, we've got to draft for need here.' I think you make mistakes that way. Don't get me wrong, it comes into everybody's pick when you're looking at players but we don't feel the need to have to reach and take a player down the line just because we need a position.'
Jones reiterated most of that view when asked if that extended to wide receivers as well.
The Cowboys signed running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders as free agents and they added Parris Campbell to their receiving corps.

Cowboys may have stumbled into a superstar as a second-round pick angles toward starting

The Dallas Cowboys needed help at defensive end for the 2025 season. Facing the loss of long-time starter and multiple-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Lawrence, the team needed reinforcements. The club had drafted the position, highly, but had yet to reap any dominating rewards. So when the opportunity presented itself to secure themselves the potential steal of the 2025 draft, they jumped on it Dallas secured the services of perhaps the best pass-rushing defensive end of the draft when they drafted Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku. But pre-draft accolades don't matter if it doesn't manifest itself on a pro field, and while training camp isn't the real thing, what Ezeiruaku has shown in Oxnard has a lot of people extremely excited. Rundown Position: Defensive End Age: 21 Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 248 pounds Hometown: Williamstown, NJ High School: Williamstown College: Boston College (Highlights) Draft: 2025 Second Round (No. 44 overall) Acquired: 2025 draft Contract: Four-year contract (2025), $10.2 million 2025 Base Salary: $840,000, $1.85 million cap hit Profile With Micah Parsons not participating in practice due to his contract dispute, Ezeiruaku has been declaring himself as a true force to reckon with. Lining up primarily as a left defensive end, Ezeiruaku has shown a complex rush attack that is far beyond his years. He's also displayed the ability to set the edge, looking like he's ready to take on a starting role sooner rather than later. Dallas brought back Dante Fowler, who left for a season in Washington, and the expectation was that he'd be starting opposite Parsons, but that may not be the case and if it is may not be for long. The Cowboys also signed Payton Turner, a former first-round pick like Fowler, as veteran depth. They join last year's second rounder Marshawn Kneeland as Parsons' supporting cast. That's before mentioning 2022 second-round pick Sam Williams, who is looking to return from an ACL injury. Together, the Cowboys have assembled a tremendously pedigreed group at defensive end, but Ezeiruaku looks like a potential breakout star amongst the room. Now in the final year of his rookie contract, Micah Parsons is eligible to ink an extension with the Cowboys. Seeing that he's grown into one of the NFL's most impactful defensive players, he's in line for a sizable raise. When asked if he expects the All-Pro linebacker to be in uniform Week 1, he is hopeful things will eventually work themselves out. "Micah is a competitor. I hope to see Micah out there soon. When the business gets worked out, it gets worked out," Schottenheimer told reporters Saturday. Fellow top defensive stars such as Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt have landed deals that pay them around $40 million annually. Seeing that the Cowboys star is equally impactful of a talent, he is sure to command a similar price tag. "Our guys are focused on what we're trying to build," Schottenheimer said, via The Athletic. "As we get closer to a game week, it's exciting. We got the (Los Angeles) Rams coming in here next week. There are plenty of things for us to focus on. We're almost through the install. Our guys have a very singular focus, and that's getting better and getting ready to have a hell of a practice today." JAY-Z, Roc Nation Call Out Jerry Jones For 'False Statement'

JAY-Z, Roc Nation Call Out Jerry Jones For 'False Statement' originally appeared on The Spun. The fallout from some of Jerry Jones' most recent comments continued into Sunday after the Cowboys owner took aim at Dez Bryant, JAY-Z and Roc Nation for being the reason why he hasn't wanted Micah Parsons' agent involved in the linebacker's contract negotiations this offseason. Speaking to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at Dallas' training camp, Jones called out the former star receiver and his representation for how they allegedly handled business back in 2015. "[W]hen we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found," the 82-year-old claimed. "JAY-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. JAY-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours. He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time.' And what did I say? I said, 'I'm going to call you [when I have a problem].' He quit taking my call." That statement not only led to an aggressive response from Bryant on X. Who said: "JERRY JONES I DONT THINK ITS SMART TO MENTION MY NAME I KEPT QUIET ABOUT A LOT OF UNFAIR S—T.. ON SOME G S—T… WE CAN HAVE STORY TIME IF THATS WHAT WE ARE DOING." But it also received an official statement from JAY-Z and Roc Nation who shot down Jones' recollection as both "false" and "comical." "In 2015, at the 21 Club, on a napkin, Jerry Jones, Juan Perez, Shawn 'JAY-Z' Carter, and Stephen Jones negotiated a five-year, $70 million deal, which included a $45 million guarantee and a $20 million signing bonus for Dez Bryant. At the time, it was the second-largest contract for a wide receiver in NFL history," the sports agency said. "The claim that Mr. Carter or Roc Nation representatives did not return a call from Jerry Jones is not only a false statement, but it's also a comical one." If Jerry's goal for the summer was to be the loudest team possible he certainly accomplished that. But it doesn't seem to be bringing him any closer to the Super Bowl he's (supposedly) been longing for for the last 30 Roc Nation Call Out Jerry Jones For 'False Statement' first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.
