Russell Brand granted bail after court appearance

Yahoo02-05-2025

Russell Brand has arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London to face charges of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.
The broadcaster, comedian and actor faces one allegation of rape, one allegation of indecent assault, one of oral rape and two further counts of sexual assault, relating to four separate women.
Photographers surrounded his car as he arrived, and he did not speak the reporters gathered outside the court building.
Surrounded by cameras and microphones, it took him more than two minutes to walk the short distance to the court door, passing alongside blocks of photographers, who were flanked by police officers.
Brand confirmed his name and address in court, and that he is aged 49.
He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman by touching her breasts and indecently assaulting another by grabbing her arm and dragging her towards a male toilet.
Brand, who was asked to stand in court for the 12-minute hearing, was charged by post last month.
He was granted bail for the case, which will be heard at the Old Bailey.
His next court appearance will be 30 May, and he confirmed during the hearing that he understood his bail conditions.
Brand, who was born in Essex, rose to fame as a stand-up comedian, performing at the Hackney Empire in 2000 and later the Edinburgh Fringe.
He later moved into broadcasting, hosting national television and radio programmes.
The turning point in his career came in the mid-2000s, when he hosted Big Brother's Big Mouth, a companion show to the hugely popular reality series Big Brother.
It provided the springboard he was looking for and led to him becoming one of the most sought-after presenters in the UK.
Brand went on to host the NME, MTV and Brit awards ceremonies, had his own debate series by E4, and fronted the UK leg of charity concert Live Earth.
His career included hosting radio shows on the BBC, in particular for 6 Music and Radio 2, between 2006 and 2008.
Brand released a video in April in which he said he'd never engaged in non-consensual activity and was grateful for the opportunity to defend the charges in court.

Passenger's life changed forever after chance encounter on flight: ‘Meet-cute fantasy'

It wasn't exactly love at first flight — but somewhere between the airplane aisle and window seat, a little turbulence turned into a whole lot of sparks. When Los Angeles native Megan Meza noticed a 'cute' guy approach her row on an April 2022 flight to London, she immediately began fantasizing about an airplane romance between her and the handsome stranger. Little did she know, the man would be Brit Freddie Gershinson, who would eventually become her husband-to-be. 'I immediately thought he was cute. I saw him pause near our row, and I thought, 'There is no way he is going to sit next to me',' she told the Daily Mail. 'So when he put his backpack on the seat, I couldn't believe it. It's like every single girl's dream to have the cute guy sit next to you in some meet-cute fantasy. 'And here it was suddenly happening. I actually texted my mom (who was sitting in a different row) along with my sister and friends, being like, 'CUTE GUY IN MY ROW. SOS.'' Initially, Meza was too nervous to chat up the six-foot-two stranger, but when he dropped his AirPods and couldn't find them, she piped in with advice to look at the row behind. While she 'had no other expectations,' the pair spoke for six hours during the flight, speaking over the woman sitting between them in the middle seat. 'At this point, I was like, okay, this is fun and flirty. Like he had every opportunity to go back to his music, but we kept chatting,' she dished. 'I [couldn't believe I was] having a connection with a total stranger,' she said, adding they stopped chatting when the cabin lights dimmed at night. But Gershinson was determined to keep the conversation going. He passed over his phone, asking, 'Have you got a boyfriend?' in the Notes app. Meza quickly responded 'No' with a smiley face. After the flight landed, the pair exchanged phone numbers and the Brit said he returned to London 'with a smile on his face' because of her.' 'At that point I was like — I have never met a man who is so confident and upfront with his emotions and it sucks that I will probably never see him again,' Meza said. 'We continued to text immediately after the flight. About three days after we met, he called me and said he hadn't felt a connection like this before, and wanted to see if I would come stay with him in London [after my family vacation].' Unable to adjust her return date, Meza returned to the U.S. but told Gershinson that if they were still texting in the summer, she'd visit him. Three months later, after they called each other 'every day' on the phone, she returned to London. 'On the third day [of the trip], he took me to meet his parents for tea, then surprised me with an early birthday dinner, and then we met his friends for drinks,' Meza revealed. 'It was that night I thought, I can't go back home and that be the end of it. Everything was too natural – his family, his friends, our connection. 'He was so intentional, kind, and so confident in who he was. So that night, we had a long talk about all of it, and we made it official. His words were, 'I like you too much to not try to make this work.' So we did.' Three years after their meet-cute, the happy couple is getting married. Meza urged singles to keep an open mind because you'll never know when you'll meet your happily ever after. 'I saw a man who I thought was very cute, and I used that as an opportunity to have this 'yes' moment on a plane where it's like, I'm never going to see him again. What do I have to lose?' she told PEOPLE. 'Dating is a drag and with Freddie, I never felt like we were playing games. If I had known this was waiting for me, I wouldn't have wasted another day crying over boys who didn't deserve the tears,' Meza added. 'So don't lose hope. The right person is out there and it would have sucked to settle and never have found this.'

'I flew from Manchester to Ibiza and spent less than a night out in the UK'

A savvy Brit spent less jetting to Ibiza than she would have done on a night out in the UK. Savannah Southward decided against paying extortionate prices in Blighty. The 22-year-old booked some cheap flights to spend 17 hours dancing and soaking up the Spanish sun. Savannah and her pal Leighton Speak spent just £45 on their Ryanair tickets from Manchester Airport. The salon owner arrived around midnight and partied until 6am, before the pair headed to the beach. The pals sunbathed their hangovers away and topped up their tans before heading back to the UK. She spent £40 at the club and £15 on spending money so in total the trip costs her £100. 'Even though Ibiza is an expensive place I didn't spend more than I would on a night in the UK,' Savannah, of Wigton, near Carlisle, Cumbria, told Luxury Travel Daily. 'I think a lot of people do day trips abroad because there's always cheap flights and sometimes you spend less than you would in the UK. 'I would absolutely pick Ibiza nightlife over the UK, it's always so busy with so many options of clubs and music. 'We landed about 10pm and had some pre-drinks before we went to CamelPhat's opening party at Pacha. 'It opened at 11pm but we got there for about 12:30am and stayed until 6am. 'We then waited on the beach until it was time to go back to the airport about 12pm. 'We didn't go to sleep but we were definitely ready for a nap when we got on the plane. 'The whole night went so fast we didn't even have time to think about being tired. 'We both agreed it was the best night out we've ever had and now we know how easy and affordable it is we have rebooked for July.' The duo took the trip last month flying out on 20 May and returning the next day.
