The truth about why Biggest Loser's Bob Harper had a heart attack

Whether you watched the series when it was initially on TV or this is your first time hearing about it, everyone is talking about The Biggest Loser right now. And, that's no coincidence. Netflix's newest documentary – Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser – takes a deep-dive into the programme that captured America's attention from 2004 to 2016, interviewing everyone from former contestants to coaches who appeared on the show.
Speaking of which, one coach from The Biggest Loser who has been of particular interest is Bob Harper. More recently, you might recognise him from the third season of The Traitors US, but he first made a name for himself as a celebrity trainer before going on to coach contestants on The Biggest Loser and later present the show, too. All of that is great for Harper's career, but fans also had concerns after he faced a shocking medical scare in 2017.
Here, we go into who Bob Harper is and how he – the apparent epitome of health – suffered a heart attack...
After initially starting his career as a personal trainer to the stars (as well as appearing as an extra in a string of music videos), Bob Harper made his TV debut as a fitness coach on the first season of The Biggest Loser in 2004. He continued on the show as a trainer across 15 seasons, and also appeared in several of the show's spin-off workout DVDs. By 2015, he'd taken over presenting the hit series and made appearances on the first three seasons of The Biggest Loser Australia.
Beyond The Biggest Loser, in 2010 Harper launched his own website through which subscribers could receive weight-loss coaching. The success of this online business led to the release of his own workout DVD series, followed by contributions to Shape magazine as well as high-profile speaking events.
Taking all of the above into consideration, Harper sounds like a pretty healthy guy. It came as a shock, then, when at age 51 he suffered a heart attack while working out at the gym. This prompted many fans to query: how could someone so fit have such a major health scare?
"I was in full cardiac arrest,'' Harper told TODAY just two months after the heart attack that almost claimed his life. "My heart stopped. Not to be dramatic, but I was dead. I was on that ground dead." The fitness coach went on to explain that he had suffered a 'widow maker' which has a survival rate of just 6%.
As for how he survived, Harper credits the fast-thinking of those around him in the gym and the fact that there were two doctors nearby. A sudden cardiac arrest like the one Harper had stops the heart beating and blood is no longer pumped through the body or to the brain – this means death can occur within minutes. Thankfully, the quick-acting doctors performed CPR and used a defibrillator to keep him alive.
"The fact that there were doctors in the gym when I had the heart attack saved my life," he said of what happened that day. Like fans, Harper said he was in disbelief at being told he'd had a heart attack when he woke up in hospital two days later.
"It was hugely shocking for me,'' he said, going on to explain what caused the near-death event. "I've learned a lot about myself," the fitness expert added. "I've learned a lot about the fact that genetics played a part in this. It is so important to know your health." For context, Harper's mother died of a heart attack at 70 and his grandfather passed away from one as well. What's more, despite his life being very exercise-heavy, his cholesterol levels were revealed to be quite high.
While genetics may have been the cause of Harper's heart attack, experts have credited his fitness levels as a reason for his survival – although, this is something he had to tone down in the aftermath. Unable to jump back into his former fitness routine, Harper turned to lower-intensity workouts, including yoga. He also took up cardio rehab three times a week, and swapped his usual "carnivore" diet for one that centred around plant-based ingredients, per NBC.
Understandably describing his heart attack as "life-changing", Harper explained that, while terrifying, it gave him a new outlook on life. "I became so much more aware of how precious this life is and that life can turn on a dime and lights can go out before you know it," he told NBC. "I found that I'm much more appreciative and much more passionate. Once you've had a heart attack, and survive it, you're part of the club – the heart attack survivors club – you want to be able to get the message out to help people as much as you can."
As Harper's case has shown, even if you live a well-balanced, active lifestyle, you are still at risk of having a heart attack. That's because, while regular exercise and a healthy diet can be generally beneficial for heart health, and reduce the risk of certain conditions, it doesn't eliminate that risk altogether.
According to the NHS, coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of heart attacks, and your chance of developing it is increased by: smoking, a high-fat diet, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), and being overweight or obese.
Genetics also play a role. "This means that if someone you are related to has or has had a condition [like CHD], you might be at risk of developing it too," explains The British Heart Foundation. That being said, "while you cannot change your family history, or your genetics, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of having a heart attack." These include staying active – like Harper – as well as maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding alcohol and tobacco products.
All three episodes of the Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser documentary will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday 15 August.

The "Fast and Furious" movies are maybe the biggest surprise in filmmaking this century aside from the rise of Marvel and the fall of "Star Wars." The first movie is great — more on that in a bit — but few could have predicted that the "car porn" action movies now known as the "Fast Saga" would become one of the biggest film franchises in movie-making history. Chances are that you're reading this article having already watched at least one of them. So whether you're a fan of the franchise or just looking for something to watch this weekend, I have good news for you: Netflix just added seven of the "Fast and Furious" movies to its library this week. And I'm here to tell you which three you need to watch first. This isn't necessarily my three best "Fast Saga" movies or even my three favorites (though admittedly two of them are), but it's the three movies I'd choose to watch of the seven "Fast and Furious" movies that Netflix just added if I could only pick three. So let's get under the hood, starting with the one that started it all: "The Fast and the Furious." "The Fast and the Furious" (2001) is essentially a remake of the 1991 classic "Point Break." Nobody will admit it, but this movie is just Kathryn Bigelow's masterpiece with cars instead of surfing. But the beauty of ripping off a great movie is that you're emulating greatness, and because of that, "The Fast and the Furious" also manages to be great, even if it's not quite "Point Break." In the Johnny Utah role of undercover agent forced to join a criminal gang, "The Fast and the Furious" stars Paul Walker as LAPD officer Brian O'Conner. He's been assigned to infiltrate a street racing gang suspected of robbing several semitrucks on local highways. To find out who is behind the hijackings, he starts working at a performance auto parts shop, which causes him to cross paths with legendary street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). To impress Toretto, Brian enters an illegal street race and wagers his car. He loses to Dom, but then helps the street racer escape the cops and starts working with Dom to restore a Toyota Supra and turn it into a "10-second car." This movie is genuinely one of my favorites to watch, and it stands well on its own all these years later, despite going on to spawn numerous sequels and spinoffs. If you're watching "Fast Saga" movies, you have to start here. Watch "The Fast and the Furious" on Netflix now Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" is a complicated movie. It's the first in the "Fast Saga" not to feature Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner, and only at the end, in a brief cameo, does Vin Diesel show up as Dominic Toretto. That puts the movie largely on the shoulders of Lucas Black as military brat Sean Boswell, who at the start of the movie is sent from Arizona to live with his father, a U.S. Navy lieutenant stationed in Tokyo. In retrospect, that wasn't maybe the strongest choice for the franchise to make, though it's not as bad as critics made it out to be at the time. Black isn't memorable as Sean, nor is the rapper Bow Wow as fellow military brat Twinkie, who gets Sean into drift racing in Tokyo. But Sung Kang remains enjoyable as Han Lue, and the racing in this movie is genuinely excellent. The movie also introduces director Justin Lin to the franchise, and would go on to not only spawn sequels in the "Fast Saga" but also spawn a few prequels. Its place in the timeline may be complicated, but its place in the pantheon of best "Fast" films has grown as the years have gone on. Plus, it's originally written without much connective tissue to the other movies in the franchise, so it works well as a standalone movie. Watch "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" on Netflix now "Fast Five" is a pivotal movie in the "Fast and Furious" movies for a few reasons. First, it was the last movie for a while not to be directly connected to what happens to Han in "Tokyo Drift." Second, it introduced Dwayne Johnson to the franchise as U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs, a character that would become integral to the "Fast Saga" going forward, even launching a spin-off franchise. But most importantly, this movie transitioned the "Fast and Furious" movies from (relatively) grounded "car porn" street racing films to full-blown action blockbusters that would take the franchise into the stratosphere (literally). Those reasons are why I have "Fast Five" on this list, even though the next two films in the franchise — "Fast and Furious 6" and "Furious 7" — might arguably be better movies. So grab some popcorn and round out your "Fast Saga" movie marathon as Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto and Paul Walkers Brian O'Conner team up with Dom's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) to steal $100 million from corrupt Brazilian businessman (druglord) Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) while avoiding capture by Dwayne Johnson's Agent Hobbs. Appearing on The Church of Tarantino podcast, the Reservoir Dogs director was asked if there's any chance The Adventures of Cliff Booth will play in theaters despite it being released through Netflix. 'Well, they might,' Tarantino answered. 'It's not their business model, so I don't hold it against the company for not following what's not their business model. You can [decry] that it's not their business model, but it is just what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a two-week release of it, at least limited, to some degree. And while Disney and Amazon have gained ground, Netflix's global reach, brand loyalty, and content machine keep it ahead. Their 'local for local' strategy, which revolves around producing hits in markets like Japan, Korea, and now France via TF1, gives them an edge no one can match. What is the 12-Month Forecast for NFLX stock? There are 38 analysts offering price targets on NFLX stock via TipRanks, with a fairly bullish consensus. Today, the stock carries a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on 26 Buy, 11 Hold, and one Sell rating over the past three months. NFLX's average stock price target of $1,394.23 suggests ~13% upside over the next twelve months. NFLX Transitions from Disruptor to Dominant Leader Netflix has transitioned from industry disruptor to dominant market leader, while continuing to uncover new growth avenues. Its advertising tier is scaling rapidly, globally resonant content is attracting new audiences, and free cash flow is reaching levels previously thought unattainable. While the stock trades at a premium, businesses combining this degree of growth and profitability seldom come at a discount.
