Strictly's Anton Du Beke says wife's endometriosis diagnosis is 'cruel and inexplicable'
Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke has spoken frankly about his wife's devastating battle with endometriosis and how it affected their journey to parenthood.
The cherished BBC personality married marketing executive Hannah Summers in 2017, having first met at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey in 2012. The pair were delighted to welcome twins George and Henrietta following their wedding, after successful IVF treatment.
Yet, during a heartfelt conversation on Giovanna Fletcher's Happy mum Happy Baby podcast, Anton revealed that Hannah had grave worries about their chances of starting a family due to her crippling endometriosis condition.
The NHS describes endometriosis as "where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other parts of the body. It can have a big impact on your life, but there are treatments that can help".
The distinguished dancer admitted his confusion at life's harshness, as he observed Hannah tenderly engaging with her nephews, questioning the fairness of their fertility struggles, reports the Mirror.
He said: "I knew I wanted to be with her, I saw her with her nephews. She's so kind and so caring, I just couldn't understand the universe."
Anton bemoaned the apparent unfairness from above, stating: "And whoever is upstairs, if anyone's upstairs, looking down and going 'you are the most perfect person to have children, but I'm not going to let you have any children because I'm going to give you this'.
"And I'm going to say 'you're going to have this endometriosis, and you're going to suffer with this all of your life, chronically, and I'm not going to let you have any children.
"I thought that was peculiar, cruel, and inexplicable and unforgivable. And if ever I go up to somewhere and meet this person I would say 'I think you're not OK with decisions like this, this doesn't make any sense to me."
Anton has candidly spoken about the difficulties he and his wife Hannah encountered during their IVF journey, which eventually brought them closer together. The couple were blessed as the treatment worked on their first attempt, resulting in the birth of their twins, George and Henrietta, in 2017, with their nuptials taking place later that year.
In a heartfelt chat with Giovanna, Anton admitted his previous lack of knowledge about endometriosis and emphasised the importance of increased government funding for women's health services.
Reflecting on their ordeal, he shared: "Then we went through the process of IVF, well crying out loud. You girls are extraordinary. As much as I want to get involved, all I can do is hold your hand. It makes me emotional every time I talk about it. The injections, the stress, the anxiety. I have anxiety and stress but it's not my body.
"She has these injections and the bruises in the bum, in the thigh, in the stomach. And you're trying to help but what can you do? Whatever you want, tell me and I'll do it but that's all you have and it's horrendous as a man to watch it.
"You feel so inadequate and you want to do so much more but I can't do anything. And that's why you girls are so extraordinary, you're extraordinary that you do all this stuff."

Gangster: The Story of the Black Widow - inside the life of Britain's most notorious female gangster Linda Calvey
The BBC's hit Gangster podcast series returns on Friday 8 August with the explosive true-crime tale of Linda Calvey - a woman whose name is etched into the darkest corners of the British underworld. And for the first time ever, her children speak publicly about the lasting consequences of her life of crime. Hosted by investigative journalist Livvy Haydock, Gangster: The Story of the Black Widow explores the extraordinary life of Linda, who rose through the ranks of London's criminal scene to become one of the UK's most feared female gangsters. Now 76, Linda opens up in candid interviews with Livvy about love, loss, and lethal consequences. Dubbed 'The Black Widow', Linda served time in the infamous H Wing alongside notorious killers Myra Hindley and Rose West. In this six-part series, she revisits the crimes that defined her, the prison years that changed her, and the regrets that still haunt her. This series also includes exclusive interviews with Linda's children, Neil and Mel, speaking publicly for the first time. In a raw and emotionally charged conversation, they reveal what it was really like growing up as the children of armed robbers, and how their childhood was shaped by crime, violence and loss. Neil recalls playing outside aged just three and a half with what turned out to be a real sawn-off shotgun: 'I thought it was just another toy gun, I'd found it behind the sofa. I was outside running around with it when one of the neighbours knocked on the door. My mum just said, 'Oh, he's got loads of guns.' She thought it was a toy, but it wasn't.' Mel, meanwhile, describes a surreal early memory of going on a spending spree to Hamleys, with money she found under Linda's bed. They also open up about the devastating loss of their father Mickey who was shot and killed during a failed robbery, and how they later lost their mother too, when she was later imprisoned for murder. Neil said: 'When my dad got killed and my mum went to prison, it was like falling into a black hole. You just don't know which way to turn.' Mel added: 'I was angry. I'd already lost my dad, then I lost my mum. I told her that. I was about 14, and I asked her, 'Why did you do that to us?' I was bitter for years. It was like drinking a poison that festered in me.' Both siblings reflect on how that trauma shaped their adult lives, from struggles with addiction and mental health to years spent numbing the pain. 'It's like I walked into a party at 14 and didn't leave until I was in my forties,' Mel said. 'I was reckless. For years I was just on another planet.' Despite the pain, there are also moments of reconciliation. Neil adds: 'I might have been angry with the situation, but I never blamed my mum. I'd still choose her. And my dad. It's just a shame how it all went.' Mel agrees: 'I'd still choose them too, but I'd want it to be different. I used to be envious of my friends whose parents had jobs, mortgages, dinner on the table. That's what I wanted. A normal life.' The Gangster podcast series has garnered millions of downloads and widespread critical acclaim for its deep dives into Britain's criminal underworld. This latest six-part series pushes even further, offering a rare female perspective on violence, power and survival in a world dominated by men - and for the first time, lays bare the personal cost of crime on the children left behind. Livvy Haydock said: 'Linda Calvey's story is one of the most extraordinary I've ever come across. This podcast isn't about glamourising crime, it's about asking how someone becomes 'The Black Widow' and what that says about class, gender, and justice in Britain." Freddie Flintoff visits the hospital staff that cared for him after his terrifying Top Gear crash as the 'hero' surgeon speaks out on his 'complex' injuries
Freddie Flintoff's surgeon has revealed the severe injuries he sustained in the 2022 Top Gear crash were the 'most complex' he had ever seen as the cricket star thanked his hospital staff. The 47-year-old, whose real name is Andrew, returned to St George's Hospital in Tooting, where he was airlifted after his near-fatal crash at the Dunsfold Aerodrome while filming for an episode of BBC show Top Gear. Flintoff thanked the NHS staff who cared for him and said: 'I came here probably the lowest I've ever been, in need of help and the expertise, the love, the compassion they showed me was incredible. 'I'll be eternally grateful - absolute superheroes.' Posing for photographs with the hospital staff who cared for him, the father-of-four dressed down in a blue cardigan, white t-shirt and grey trousers, showing off his almost scar less face after he underwent reconstructive surgery after the crash. The former England captain was racing a Morgan Super 3 three-wheeled sports car before the vehicle flipped and dragged him across the tarmac nose down for 50 meters. Recalling the incident, consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Jahrad Haq, said: 'I was on call that day and received a phone call from the emergency department consultant. 'A lot of injuries are managed at a more junior level before escalating, so I knew this one was serious. 'Of all the trauma cases I've seen in over 20 years, this was among the most complex.' Mr Haq previously said the five-hour operation was like putting a 'jigsaw puzzle' back together - except the pieces weren't there. Flintoff's wife, Rachael, recalled the harrowing moment she came to comfort her partner in hospital and said: 'I've never seen someone so scared in their eyes, and he just stared at me, and I just think he was looking at me to know how bad he was. 'So to be fair, I totally pulled myself together, and I just didn't cry. I just said, it's fine. You're going to be okay. I can't believe how amazing you look. Freddie Flintoff has opened up on accepting his scars following the horrific Top Gear crash that almost killed him 'Before we got home, I did call the kids, and I did say to them, 'You've just got to be as strong as you've ever been. Your dad does look different at the moment. It's going to get better, but I don't want you to look shocked and horrified, because that's going to knock him.' The Ashes hero remained housebound for the next seven months, only venturing out for appointments with doctors and dentists. He has since made a remarkable return to the public eye, launching a coaching career with the help of his long-term friend Rob Key, the ECB's men's director of cricket. Flintoff, who has now taken charge of England Lions, England and Wales' 'second-tier' team, has also returned to TV with his heartwarming Field of Dreams show which sees him take a group of Lancashire lads to India to play cricket.

Screenwriter for upcoming James Bond film revealed as Peaky Blinders creator
After months of behind-the-scenes maneuvering, the next chapter in the James Bond saga is taking shape. Following the recent news that Dune director Denis Villeneuve will helm the next 007 film, Amazon MGM Studios has officially selected its screenwriter: Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Sources confirm that Knight will pen the script for the next installment in the long-running spy franchise, according to Deadline. The announcement follows an intensive search by Amazon MGM, which gained full creative control of the Bond series earlier this year. Knight's appointment marks a pivotal step in what the studio hopes will be a bold new era for Bond. Producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and David Heyman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) were among the first creative leads brought onboard, with Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer. The team has reportedly been meticulous in assembling the next phase of Bond's cinematic legacy, holding numerous meetings over the past few months to lock down key talent. While speculation has swirled about who might step into the tuxedo as the next 007, insiders emphasise that the studio's recent focus has been squarely on script development. Knight had emerged as a frontrunner in recent weeks, but his hiring reportedly hinged on a key meeting with Villeneuve, who has been deep in production on the next Dune installment. That meeting took place last week, and sources say Villeneuve gave his enthusiastic endorsement after he was chosen as the director for Bond 26, clearing the way for Knight to officially take on the project. Knight brings with him an impressive CV. Best known for creating the BAFTA-winning Peaky Blinders, he has also written and produced acclaimed series such as Taboo (BBC/FX), SAS Rogue Heroes (BBC), and All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix), the latter earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Limited Series. His film work includes the Oscar-nominated Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, and Spencer, as well as Locke, Serenity, and Hummingbird – projects he both wrote and directed. He was awarded a CBE in 2020 for services to drama and entertainment, and in 2023 was granted a Fellowship by the Royal Television Society for his contributions to British television. He also co-founded Digbeth Loc. Studios, a film and TV production hub in Birmingham that opened its doors last year. As development heats up, fans may still be waiting to learn who will step into 007's shoes. After well over a year of fevered speculation – ever since he was falsely reported to have officially landed the 007 gig, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has remained one of the front-runners to play Bond next. Fresh odds from Ladbrokes on Wednesday had him at 8/11, making him the first odds-on candidate in their eyes to be the next 007, after his appearance in 28 Years Later with Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. Behind him is another hot favourite Callum Turner, next to be seen in A24 supernatural rom-com Eternity with Elisabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, and The Gentlemen's Theo James, both of whom are on 5/1. Slow Horses star and new Mr Darcy Jack Lowden is 6/1, and both Harris Dickinson and Tom Holland are 8/1. More Trending Egerton is currently 66/1 the bookmakers confirmed to Metro, having been bumped from 50/1 as recently as Friday. He started the year as 80/1 to be the next Bond, the same price as Sir David Beckham. His shortest odds were 25/1 just after he picked up his Golden Globe in 2020. With Villeneuve set to bring his signature scope and precision to the director's chair, and Knight anchoring the story, the next Bond film is already shaping up to be a high-stakes reinvention.
