Darshan's Bail Cancelled: Timeline Of Renukaswamy Murder Case That Shook Karnataka

The SC bench headed by Justice Pardiwala observed granting bail in a case of such grave nature carried serious risk of the accused influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence.
In a major development in the Renukaswamy murder case, the Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan and other accused by the Karnataka High Court. The bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala observed that granting bail in a case of such grave nature carried a serious risk of the accused influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence. The Court stressed that the High Court had failed to consider the seriousness of the allegations, the brutality of the crime, and the potential impact on the investigation when granting bail.
Earlier, in December 2024, the Karnataka High Court had granted regular bail to Darshan, co-accused Pavithra Gowda, and five others. The HC reasoned that the investigation was substantially complete, a chargesheet had been filed, and continued custody was not necessary. This order was strongly challenged by the Karnataka government, which argued that the High Court's decision was 'perverse" and ignored the gravity of the offence, eventually leading to the apex court's intervention.
Timeline Of the Renukaswamy Murder Case
8 June 2024: Renukaswamy from Chitradurga was allegedly tortured and killed in a shed in Bengaluru after sending inappropriate messages to actress Pavithra Gowda.
9 June 2024: His body, bearing severe injuries, was found near a stormwater drain in Sumanahalli, Bengaluru.
10 June 2024: Four men surrendered claiming responsibility over a financial dispute, but discrepancies soon led investigators back to Darshan.
11 June 2024: Actor Darshan was arrested in Mysuru; along with Pavithra Gowda and others, he was taken into custody.
June–August 2024: Darshan's custody was extended multiple times as investigations progressed.
August 2024: A leaked photo showed Darshan appearing relaxed in prison, prompting outrage and suspension of jail staff. He was shifted to Ballari Central Jail.
September 2024: Bengaluru Police filed a 3,991-page chargesheet against Darshan and 16 others. Judicial custody continued.
30 October 2024: Darshan received six-week interim bail on medical grounds to undergo surgery.
13 December 2024: The Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Darshan, Pavithra Gowda, and five others.
24 January 2025: The Supreme Court issued notices to Darshan and others, agreeing to hear the Karnataka government's challenge to the HC's bail order.
May 2025: While out on bail, Darshan requested court approval to go abroad for work.
17 & 24 July 2025: The Supreme Court called the HC's decision 'prima facie perverse" and akin to an acquittal, expressing concern over the reasoning.
7 August 2025: Written submissions were filed by Darshan and Pavithra requesting continuation of bail.
13 August 2025: The Supreme Court reserved its verdict for 14 August.
14 August 2025: The apex court set aside the Karnataka High Court's bail order, citing the risk of influence on witnesses and the seriousness of the case.
The Renukaswamy murder case shocked Karnataka, not only for its brutality but also because of the involvement of a major film industry star. According to investigators, the 33-year-old victim, a fan of Darshan, had allegedly sent obscene and threatening messages to actress Pavithra Gowda, who is believed to share close ties with the actor. Police allege that this provoked a violent retaliation, in which Renukaswamy was abducted, brutally assaulted, and killed before his body was dumped in Bengaluru.

Will fully cooperate for release of The Devil: Actor Darshan

Agency: PTI Bengaluru, Aug 16 (PTI) Kannada actor Darshan on Saturday said he would 'fully cooperate" for the release of his film 'The Devil'. He also expressed confidence that his 'celebrities" — as he calls his fans — will also stand by his decision. The message was conveyed through his wife Vijayalakshmi's Instagram account. Directed by Prakash Veer, the first song of the film was supposed to have been released on August 15. But with the Supreme Court cancelling his bail, Darshan was taken into custody a day before, on August 14. Following which, the plans for the film were reportedly put on hold. However, Darshan said his first duty is to support the directors who believed in him and the producers who have invested crores of money in him. 'So, I hope that all the work of my film 'The Devil' will proceed without any hindrance. I hereby inform you that you (makers of the film) have my full cooperation. And I firmly believe that my celebrities (fans) will consent to this," Darshan is quoted as saying in his wife's Instagram post. Darshan had wrapped up the film in July. The reshooting of the film started in February after the actor was released on regular bail. 'Cinema is an entertainment medium and should be viewed only from the perspective of entertainment," the actor said further through his wife's post. Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024, in connection with Renukaswamy murder case. Darshan was granted interim bail on medical grounds after he claimed back pain. He was then granted regular bail by the Karnataka High Court in mid-December. PTI JR ROH view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Renukaswamy was allegedly murdered for sending objectionable messages to Pavithra Gowda on Instagram. His body was discovered near a stormwater drain close to an apartment complex in Sumanahalli, Bengaluru, on June 9, 2024. Thoogudeepa was arrested while shooting for The Devil in Mysuru. He was released from prison on October 30 on interim bail after spending 131 days in jail. On December 13, the Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Thoogudeepa and Pavithra Gowda. The state government had approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail. The state government had challenged the bail petition and the Supreme Court denied him relief. According to a source, the movie is presently in the post-production stage and was scheduled to be released in October. On August 15, the filmmakers had planned to release the first song of the movie – Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek (If You Live, Live Peacefully). Brazil's ex-President Bolsonaro leaves house arrest for medical exams ahead of coup trial

Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro briefly left house arrest on Saturday to undergo medical tests in Brasilia, weeks before the Supreme Court rules on whether he plotted a coup to stay in power after his 2022 election defeat. Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro left his home where he is under house arrest Saturday to undergo medical exams, weeks before the Supreme Court rules whether he is guilty of plotting a coup. The right-wing politician is accused of attempting to hold power despite his 2022 electoral defeat by Brazil's current leftist leader, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, 70, has been under house arrest since early August for violating a judicial ban on using social networks to plead his case to the public. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A judge agreed to temporarily lift that measure so he could get medical attention for what Bolsonaro's attorneys said were gastrointestinal problems resulting from a 2018 stabbing attack while he campaigned for president. In particular, their request noted his chronic 'reflux and hiccup symptoms' and need to go to hospital for tests, including an intestinal endoscopy. Bolsonaro arrived on Saturday morning at a medical center in the capital Brasilia, where he briefly greeted around 20 supporters waiting for him outside with Brazilian, Israeli and US flags. He did not address journalists who were also gathered. Bolsonaro was permitted by the court to remain in hospital for eight hours before returning to his Brasilia residence. Brazil's Supreme Court will begin deciding on September 2 on the coup charges against Bolsonaro, who led Latin America's largest country from 2019 to 2022. He faces up to 40 years in prison if found guilty. Bolsonaro has maintained his innocence and earned support from US President Donald Trump, who has called the trial a 'witch hunt.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Citing Bolsonaro's 'politically motivated persecution,' Trump has signed an executive order slapping 50 percent tariffs on many Brazilian imports.
