Cristian Romero named Tottenhams new captain by head coach Thomas Frank

London [UK], August 13 (ANI): Head coach Thomas Frank has named Argentinian defender Cristian Romero as Tottenham Hotspur's new captain following the exit of his predecessor Son Heung-Min to LAFC in the Major League Soccer (MLS) this summer.Son wore the captain's armband for the last two seasons after the club saw its premier goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, call his time in North London in 2023, after holding the mantle since 2015. Under Son's two-year captaincy stint, Tottenham ended its 17-year-long trophy drought by lifting the Europa League title last season. Romero, a World Cup and two-time Copa America winner, served as the vice-captain along with James Madisson during Frank's predecessor, Ange Postecoglou's two-year reign with the club. 'Today begins a new season for us, one that is truly special to me. Becoming the first captain of this beautiful club is an incredible honour. I arrived here four years ago with a single dream: to write my name into the club's history and leave my mark by winning a trophy, and I achieved that," Romero wrote in a post on X.'Now, a new journey is in front of us. A beautiful season lies ahead, and together we will work to relive the joy of that unforgettable day, May 21, 2025. Whatever happens along the way, I ask only one thing: stay united. There will be highs and lows, but together, nothing is impossible. Come on, you Spurs," he added. Romero became just the third captain for Tottenham in the last decade after Lloris and Son. Tottenham will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday, before embarking on its Premier League campaign against Burnley on Saturday.'I'm very happy to be the first team captain of the club. It's amazing for me. Today, we (Cuti and Thomas) spoke before training. Maybe before the start of the season, I've spoken a lot with him. He's a good coach and I said, 'thank you' for this, also," Romero said while speaking to the club. 'It's a big responsibility. I spoke with the players, and tomorrow is also another big night for the club, for the players, for the fans. We need to enjoy this moment," he added. (ANI)

Should Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Retire From ODIs Now? Suresh Raina Answers

Last Updated: Suresh Raina urges Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue playing ODIs for India to guide younger players. He also calls for Mohammed Siraj's selection across formats. Suresh Raina has urged Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue playing ODIs for India to help out the younger generation. He believes the two senior pros need to be part of the Indian dressing room because of their experience of winning the biggest titles in the sport and 'astute leadership'. Raina's comments come in light of reports claiming uncertainty over Rohit and Kohli's future. While both have publicly hinted at their desire to play the 2027 World Cup in Africa, the BCCI's stand is unclear. Some reports claim that the BCCI would want them to feature in the domestic 50-over tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy in their time away from the national team, and a failure to do so might get them dropped. 'Rohit and Virat's experience is very important It's crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit," Raina told Telecom Asia Sport. 'They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room," he added. Rohit and Kohli would be 40 and 38, respectively, by the time of the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will have to judge whether they still provide enough value to the team to keep out promising youngsters. Impressed with his performances in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Raina also called for pacer Mohammed Siraj to be picked for India across formats. 'Siraj should be part of the Indian set-up in all three formats, given how he has performed for the country with both the white ball and red ball. He bowled 187 overs in the series and came through without any niggle," Raina said. Siraj is a regular in ODIs and Tests but hasn't played much T20I cricket. It needs to be seen if he's picked for the 2025 Asia Cup, which will be in the T20 format. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Woakes, who sustained a dislocated shoulder while fielding during the fifth Test against India earlier this month, believes he's recovering better than he anticipated.'Certainly good news for me. That's the best way to look at it," Woakes told Sky Sports, as quoted from the official website of ICC.'Obviously out of the sling and feel like I can move it a lot better now, which is good two weeks down the line," he noted.'I suppose once you get a little bit more movement into it, feels little bit more normal. But still a lot of work to do," he added.'Going to try and (stay) focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible. Ideally, not for surgery for now, but we'll see how that goes, and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again," Woakes had picked up a nasty injury on the opening day of the series decider against India at The being ruled out of action for the remainder of the Test, Woakes would walk out to bat with his left arm in a sling on a tense final morning as England chased a series-clinching victory, but fell short by six runs.
