Raiders' Ashton Jeanty sends message to NFL after barreling over 49ers defender
Jeanty's number was called in the first quarter. He took the ball, found the hole and attacked the gap. He ran over 49ers defender Deommodore Lenoir on his way to the first down.
The Raiders lost 22-19 and Jeanty rushed for 33 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown. But it was the moment he and his teammates were talking about after the game.
He said bowling over Lenoir was his "I'm here" moment.
"Definitely today, for sure. And it takes time as a rookie to kind of gain that confidence. And I'm here, I've arrived, and it's time to keep going and make plays for this team," he said.
Raiders quarterback Geno Smith lauded Jeanty's play.
"Man, it fires me up just seeing him the way that he runs," Smith said. "He's running through people, and he's not shying away from contact. I think he's going to be a really special player, like I've always said, and I think he's just got to keep working.
"There's a lot of things that he can get better at as well, but to see him in space with the ball in his hands and how dynamic he is, it was great to see."
Jeanty had another run on 3rd-and-long, which turned the head of head coach Pete Carroll.
"Chip [Kelly] had a call that he called to give him a chance, believing that he could do it, and the guys up front could take advantage," Carroll said of the play. "They're getting pass rush in loads right there, so you have to adjust your blocking, but we did a really nice job. The way he [Jeanty] hits the line of scrimmage, he gives you a feel, and I was really fired up about that. Everybody was on the sidelines as well with him getting his first touchdown, that helps us all."
The Raiders' season is still a few weeks away from kickoff, but there is definitely excitement around one of the top college football running backs from last season.

VALENCIENNES chief Mathieu Frison admitted "everyone loves" Saints youngster Rento Takaoka less than a month after he joined the French club on loan. Takaoka scored a brace to help Valenciennes claim their first win of the season when they beat Le Puy 2-1 on Friday evening. The initial plan was for Takaoka to play for Valenciennes' reserve side to gain professional experience, having only just finished high school in Japan. The teenager has never played club football as he joined Saints from Nissho Gakuen High School in March, right after his 18th birthday. Teammate Stredair Appuah has been left impressed by the Japan youth international, who has limited English and French, a month into his loan stint. 'When you understand football and you're good at it, it's easy to play with you on the pitch," Appuah said of the language barrier. 'Rento is a real warrior, a guy who gives his all. He's very strong in front of the goal, he brings depth, and he also has amazing leaps of movement for a guy his height.'

Skylar Diggins scores 24, Nneka Ogwumike adds 21 to help Storm beat Sky 94-88
CHICAGO (AP) — Skylar Diggins scored 24 points, Nneka Ogwumike added 21 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm 94-88 on Tuesday night. Chicago (8-26) has lost five games in a row and 13 of its last 14. Dominique Malonga had 15 points, seven rebounds and a career-high three blocks for Seattle (18-18). The 19-year-old rookie hit 7 of 13 from the field and has made 106 total field goals to become the first player in WNBA history with 100 field goals before the age of 20. Brittney Sykes scored 12 points and Ezi Magbegor had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Storm. Angel Reese, who returned from a seven-game absence due to a back injury, and Ariel Atkins scored 19 points apiece for Chicago and Kia Nurse added 13. Kamilla Cardoso had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three blocks and Elizabeth Williams added 10 points and nine rebounds. Malonga made back-to-back baskets early in the second quarter to make it 28-25 and give the Storm the lead for good. Ogwumike hit a 3-pointer with 7:13 left in the game that stretched the lead to 19 points — Seattle's biggest of the game. Diggins had six assists and moved past Becky Hammon (1,708) into sole possession of seventh in WNBA history with 1,714 career assists. Ogwumike had two steals to give her 658 career steals, fifth most in league history, one more than Sheryl Swoopes. The Storm play the second of five road games Friday at Dallas. Sky star Angel Reese returns from back injury, drops 19 points in loss to Storm
Angel Reese finally made her return to the court on Tuesday night. It just wasn't enough to lead the Chicago Sky to a win. Reese dropped a team-high 19 points and had seven rebounds in their 94-88 loss to the Seattle Storm at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday. She shot 9 of 13 from the field, too. It marked her first game back in several weeks while dealing with a back injury. Reese was on a minutes restriction and played in just 26 despite being in the starting lineup. 'I want to hoop,' she said before the game, via the Chicago Sun Times. 'I'm just happy to be out here to play the game I love.' Reese said before the game that she'd address it at the end of the year. She missed two road trips and one home game recovering. 'Put all the bulls**t to the side, I wanna hoop," she said. Reese entered the night averaging 14.2 points and 12.6 rebounds per game this season. She hadn't played since the team's loss to the Washington Mystics on July 29. She had 22 points and 13 rebounds in that contest. The Storm led nearly the entire way on Tuesday night, and surged ahead just before halftime while limiting Chicago to just 14 points as a group. Though they scored only six points as a group in the second half of the third period, the Storm still carried a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter. That was just enough for them to fend off the Sky's late surge and escape with the six-point win. Ariel Atkins added 19 points, five assists and five rebounds to go with Reese's 19 points in the loss for Chicago. Kamilla Cardoso finished with 10 points, and Elizabeth Williams finished with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Sky went just 8-of-16 as a group from behind the 3-point line, too, and put up 38 points in the final quarter to get within striking distance. The Sky won just a single game without Reese and hold one of the worst records in the league at 8-26 with their latest loss, which is better than only the Connecticut Sun. They've been all-but eliminated from postseason contention, too. Skylar Diggins led the Storm with 24 points and six assists in the win. Nneka Ogwumike added 21 points and six rebounds, and Dominique Malonga put up 15 points off the bench. The Storm are also in the midst of a rough stretch. They entered the night having lost lost seven of their last eight. The win brought them back to 18-18 on the season, however, which has them in eighth in the league standings. Though Reese's second season in the league isn't much better from a team perspective, she's at least in a position to finish out the year on the court. That has to count for something.
