Chinatown acid attack suspect Marquis Johnson charged with assault

Prosecutors charged Marquis Johnson with first-degree assault in the Aug. 8 Chinatown acid attack on a 30-year-old cook, who sustained severe injuries. The 34-year-old was charged at 4 :35 p.m. Tuesday, just under the wire of the 48-hour charging deadline. Had they not met the deadline, police would have had to release Johnson. Johnson's bail was set at $500, 000. First-degree assault is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $25, 000 fine. Johnson likely will make his initial court appearance in Honolulu District Court this morning. Johnson surrendered at the main police station at 5 :35 p.m. Sunday after police named him Thursday and provided a photograph to the public, naming him as the Aug. 8 acid attack suspect. Johnson's arrest shocked friends, who described him as a kind, sweet person who danced ballet and flamenco. They had hoped it was a case of mistaken identity, which had occurred before. Johnson was wrongly arrested in 2022 while he was walking along a Waikiki street around midnight on Aug. 22, 2020, where two car theft suspects, who also were Black men, had been in the area. In the complaint, Johnson said he was told to lie prone on the ground, and handcuffed, in a case of mistaken identity, and that one officer used excessive force. The case was recently settled in federal court. In the Aug. 8 attack, police said the suspect approached the victim on the sidewalk, asked him a few questions, then suddenly threw sulfuric acid on the victim. The victim told police he did not know his assailant, police Lt. Deena Thoemmes said. The incident occurred at the corner of North Hotel and Smith streets. An employee of Lucky Belly, a restaurant at that intersection, said the victim, a cook, had come from Livestock Tavern to get some food items from Lucky Belly, which has the same owners. He said the attack occurred just outside Lucky Belly's kitchen after the cook left to return to Livestock Tavern. Police said the acid attack victim returned to his workplace, where co-workers aided him and called 911. A witness provided a description that resulted in a police sketch of a man wearing a do-rag head covering and glasses. Police said the assailant had a camera around his neck and was carrying a red or maroon water bottle. That description was initially shared with the public Aug. 13, five days after the attack. Police also provided images from surveillance video of the suspect, wearing a blue hooded shirt, walking across the street. The acid attack has similarities to two previous attacks, which were related to each other. The first was allegedly carried out by Paul Cameron in 2023 at a Mililani fitness center against a young woman he knew. Cameron also was charged in the second attack as an accomplice in attempted murder in an apparently random attack against a Chinese language teacher. The second attack was allegedly part of a murder-for-hire plot by Cameron to divert attention from him as a possible suspect in the first case. The man facing trial in the second attack is Sebastian Mahkwan, who Cameron allegedly enlisted while they were in jail.

Human remains found at boyfriend's property is likely missing Mass. pregnant teen, officials say

Human remains 'consistent with' 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro were discovered during a search of the Rehoboth residence of a man she was in a relationship with Tuesday night, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn announced. The man, 22-year-old Gregory Groom, who already faces domestic violence charges in connection with an incident involving Monteiro, will be charged with murder, Quinn said during a press conference. Monteiro, who was 11 weeks pregnant, was first reported missing on Aug. 7 by Groom. He is charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness in connection with an incident involving Monteiro that took place the day prior, Quinn's office said in a statement. Groom will be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Wednesday. Monteiro was last seen at Groom's residence at 107 County St. in Rehoboth. Police conducted extensive searches for the girl and eventually obtained a search warrant for the County Street property. During the execution of that search warrant, remains 'consistent with' those of Monteiro were found, Quinn said. Officials are awaiting confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the remains are indeed Monteiro's. Videos from the scene show an excavator arriving to the County Street area around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Monteiro's family told WCVB she and Groom had argued before she disappeared. Her sister, Faith, wrote on Facebook that the family would be holding a vigil for Monteiro on Saturday. The family also launched a GoFundMe for Monteiro, which now seeks donations to pay for funeral costs. 'This is closure and we are so thankful for everyone's help in getting here,' Monteiro's sister, Catherine, wrote. 'Obviously, there will be court proceedings but we are taking this one step at a time.' Rehoboth man charged with assaulting pregnant woman who is now missing: What to know

A 22-year-old Rehoboth man has been arrested on charges that he assaulted a missing pregnant 18-year-old woman the day before she disappeared. Gregory Groom has been charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness for acts committed against 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro on Wednesday, Aug. 6, according to a written statement from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Monteiro was last seen on Aug. 7, according to a post by the Rehoboth Police Department. Groom is currently being held without bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday morning, Aug. 20, in Taunton District Court. Bristol County State Police Detective Unit members and the Rehoboth Police Department are attempting to locate Monteiro, according to the Aug. 11 Facebook post by Rehoboth Police. Monteiro was last seen in the area of County Street in Rehoboth on Aug. 7, according to the post. She is approximately 6-feet tall with light brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a red t-shirt with "get over it" printed on the front, ripped jeans and tan boots and she may have been carrying a white bag with her belongings. The post asks anyone with information regarding her whereabouts or with surveillance video of County Street to contact Trooper Sabrina Hinchey at 508-972-1041 or Rehoboth Police Det. Paul McGovern at 508-252-3722 x 1135. WCVB-TV is reporting that Monteiro's family members say she got into an argument with her boyfriend before she went missing, and that she told them she was in fear for her safety. The DA's office did not refer to Groom as Monteiro's boyfriend in the written statement, but Monteiro's family says Groom is her boyfriend, WCVB is reporting. According to WCVB, police have searched a wooded area in Rehoboth, which is where Monteiro was last seen and near where her boyfriend lives. WCVB crews saw police carrying evidence bags while searching for Monteiro, WCVB is reporting. "I'm scared, I'm really scared," Monteiro's sister, Faith Monteiro, told WCVB. "I don't know if they have her, but some part of me feels like they do." The investigation remains ongoing by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, Massachusetts State Police and Rehoboth Police, the DA's office said.
