Operation Sindoor debate: Oppn MPs walk out from Rajya Sabha over PM Modi's absence – 'insult to the House'

Mint2 days ago
Members of Opposition INDIA bloc staged a walkout on Wednesday from the Rajya Sabha after a heated altercation between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in the House Mallikarjun Kharge over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence during the proceedings in the Upper House.
Opposition MPs led by Kharge demanded that the Prime Minister come to the Upper House and brief them on Operation Sindoor as he did on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha. Kharge said that PM Modi should have come to the House, as many of the Opposition's questions were directly related to him.
'There was a demand from the Opposition that the PM should come to the House and give a reply. If the PM doesn't come to the House despite being present in Parliament premises, then it is an insult to the House,' Kharge said.
Replying to this, Deputy Chairman of the House Harivansh said, "Mr. Kharge, I would like to inform you that I have already explained that any minister from the government side can respond. This is the ruling. You cannot force anyone."
Home Minister Amit Shah said that Mallikarjun Kharge is raising this point, who is not allowed by his own party to speak on important matters.
"Mr. Kharge is raising this issue, even though his own party (Congress) doesn't allow him to speak on important matters," Shah said. Shah concluded the debate.
The Rajya Sabha LoP again stood up and said to the Deputy Chairman, 'You interrupt on every point.' The Opposition MPs then staged a walkout from the House.
Targeting them, Amit Shah said that the opposition members simply cannot stand to listen to this debate, as they were unable to stop terrorism for so many years.
"The opposition's demand is not justified because in the Business Advisory Committee meeting, it was decided that the discussion can go on as long as you want, but it is up to the government to decide who will respond," Shah said.
"I know why they are leaving -- because for so many years, in the name of protecting their vote bank, they did nothing to stop terrorism. They simply cannot stand to listen to this debate," he added.
Speaking in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Shah announced that all three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 were neutralised during Operation Mahadevon the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday.
Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK).
If the PM doesn't come to the House... then it is an insult to the House.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Lok Sabha during the special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor', India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, on Monday. Singh addressed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. PM Modi is expected to speak in the Lok Sabha later in the day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said no world leader asked India to stop its military action against Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor' after four days of conflict in May in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
In his address to theLok Sabha, which lasted about 100 minutes, Modi lamented that while the nation received support from across the world, the Congress and its allies could not support the valour of the nation's soldiers.

Indian economy devastated by five Modi-inflicted shocks: Congress

The Congress on Friday (August 1, 2025) claimed that the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of "five Modi-inflicted shocks", and said the government, as well as its cheerleaders, are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy. Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said the Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. The Opposition party's assertions came a day after former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman knows that the country's economy is "dead". Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible. A… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 1, 2025 In a post on X, Mr. Ramesh said, "Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible." He said demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. "A fundamentally flawed GST--that is a Tax that is neither Good nor Simple--has wreaked havoc on thousands of business enterprises across the country, except the large companies who can afford to pay the cost associated with GST compliance," Ramesh said. He further claimed that the record imports from China have led to the closure of lakhs of MSMEs across the country in — Gujarat alone, around a third of the MSMEs in the stainless steel industry have shut down their operations. Exports in key areas are dependent on imports of raw materials, components, and intermediates from China, he said. Mr. Ramesh pointed out that private investment has lost the buoyancy it demonstrated during 2004-14. "Indian industrialists are acquiring citizenship of other countries in an ever-increasing measure. The politically motivated and extortionist Raid Raj, coupled with the proliferation of Modani's tentacles, has led to a loss of confidence in the Indian economy," Mr. Ramesh alleged. He argued that wages for the majority of Indians have stagnated in the last decade, across sectors and across classes. "This is particularly so in rural India. Household savings have fallen sharply just as household debt has ballooned. Private mass consumption, one of the key drivers of growth, is sputtering just as luxury consumption has not ebbed, clearly pointing to sharpening economic inequalities," the Congress leader said. "The Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. They are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy," Mr. Ramesh said. On Thursday, Mr. Gandhi had alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is "running the country to the ground". Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Mr. Gandhi had also claimed that a trade deal with the US will happen and US President Donald Trump will define it. Asked about Trump calling the Indian economy "dead", the Congress leader had said, "He is right, everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact." He had alleged that the BJP has destroyed the Indian economy.

Opposition leaders request Lok Sabha discussion on Bihar electoral roll revision

The Opposition INDIA bloc leaders have submitted a joint letter, asking for a discussion on special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday (August 1, 2025). In their letter to Mr. Birla, the Opposition MPs expressed deep concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, especially a few months before the state Assembly elections. Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha pertains to the suspension of a specific rule to allow for a motion on a particular matter. The signatories to the letter included Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gandhi, Congress' Deputy Leader in the House Gaurav Gogoi, DMK's TR Baalu, NCP (SP)'s Supriya Sule, RSP's N K Premachandran, SP's Lalji Verma, TMC's Kakoli Ghose Dastidar, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Arvind Savant and RJD's Abhay Kumar. 'We, the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition parties, wish to express our deep concern over the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections,' the Opposition MPs said in their letter. 'The revision of electoral rolls has direct implications on the right to vote and the conduct of free and fair elections. A special discussion in the Lok Sabha will allow Members to seek clarity and ensure transparency and accountability,' the letter said. INDIA bloc parties have been demanding a discussion on SIR and have also staged multiple protests inside and outside Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session. The Opposition is also planning to take out a march to the Election Commission of India headquarters next week. (With PTI inputs)
