MAFS Australia star announces huge career move as they eye up UK

Daily Mirror01-07-2025
Though his MAFS marriage with Jamie Marinos hasn't panned out, Dave Hand is looking ahead and planning for his future - his plans even include a huge move abroad.
Dave Hand is ready for his next chapter and reality TV fans will be relieved - the Aussie hunk is ready to take on more projects on the small screen, both on his turf and abroad.
Since leaving Married At First Sight Australia, Dave Hand has had to get to grips with life after reality TV. 'It's definitely a lot harder than I expected,' he says, 'You're not only thrown into TV and popularity, it's like a whole new world. Like learning to walk again.'

New to the spotlight, Dave didn't anticipate how fame would affect his everyday life. 'It plays out in everything you do,' he says. 'You go out for coffee, you're taking photos with somebody. Or you're walking down the street and people are asking you for advice.'

Audiences saw a man entering the MAFS experiment with real intention. But behind his calm exterior, his father Howard was battling cancer.
'A lot of people connected with me through my dad's sickness,' Dave says. 'Cancer is a hell of a disease and it's an eye-opener because you don't realise how many people are going through it. It's really nice to hear people's stories.'
His ability to connect has even made him crave more TV projects - he's even considering a big move to the UK. 'I want to get to the UK, probably later in the year," Dave says.
"I'd love to do some reality TV over there.' But reality TV comes with backlash, and Dave, 36, has experienced both the highs and lows of fan attention.
'On one side, you've got really nice, heartwarming messages and on the other, you've got someone who's so immature,' Dave says. 'They choose to be mean rather than spread kindness and love. I don't understand it.'

The trolls aren't the only thing frustrating him. The off-screen drama between his castmates has left Dave disappointed. MAFS' latest series was one of the most explosive yet – with Ryan Donnelly and Jacqui Burfoot's feud spiralling into applications for restraining orders and off-camera rows erupting between other participants.
'The cast members should be looking after one another after the show. And you have people acting ridiculously towards each other. It's a damn shame,' Dave sighs.
'Adrian [Araouzou] said some things about me and he copped it from the public. I feel sorry for him,' Dave says. 'But in the meantime, he's attacking me. This isn't the way the group should be handling it. It's quite scary.

'We should be backing each other at this time and we've dropped the ball completely. We could have been standing up to the bad comments together.'
Now, Dave's focus is on who matters most – his father. 'The tumours my dad had on the show had shrunk – but they've come back pretty quickly,' he says, sadly. 'He's on a new drug trial now. Only 200 people in the world are on it. Dad says, 'If I can help somebody, I'm going to give this a crack.''

But Dave doesn't sugarcoat it. 'Dad's been fighting it for five years and now it's taken a toll on him. He's a bit frail and now he's got to go into battle again.'
As for dating? He's in no rush. In fact, he's more focused on mental health advocacy. 'Mental health issues and depression have been in my family, I've witnessed it, I've lived it,' he says.
'But I've processed it, I deal with it and I know what works for me. I can help others with that. I want to get the message across that the sad days don't stick. I'd like to be a role model for kids. I want to start a charity one day.'

Melbourne is officially the second best city in the world for Gen Z to live in

Move over, Melbourne millennials – Gen Z (you know, those born between 1997 and 2012) have well and truly stepped into the spotlight, and they've got thoughts on the best cities for young people right now. Every year, Time Out releases its annual ranking of the world's greatest cities (ICYMI, Melbourne was named the world's fourth best). This comprehensive survey quizzes more than 18,500 locals on everything from their city's nightlife, food and culture, as well as important lifestyle factors like happiness, access to green space and walkability. These insights were then filtered to include only responses from those aged 30 and under, revealing which city is best for Gen Z in 2025. And, drum roll please... Melbourne has landed in second place (slay!), beating out zoomer hot spots like Barcelona, Edinburgh and Mexico City. According to the data, 77 per cent of Gen Z described Melbourne as diverse and inclusive, with a whopping 96 per cent giving high ratings to the city's art and culture scene. Our beloved city also scored highly for quality of life, with an impressive 91 per cent of twenty-somethings saying the quality of life in Melbourne is 'good' or 'amazing'. To dive a bit deeper, we reached out to our Gen Z audience via Instagram to discover exactly what they love most about Melbourne – and yep, the responses well and truly confirmed the global findings. The most common answer was just how multicultural our city is, with Melbourne's café culture also getting plenty of mentions (given how twenty-somethings are gravitating towards 'third spaces ' that offer a matcha-fuelled antidote to nightlife fatigue, we're not surprised in the slightest). Street art, sport, the electronic music scene, theatre and how safe the city is were also specified. So, which city beat out Melbourne to snag the top spot for Gen Zs? It was none other than Bangkok. The Thai capital took the crown thanks to its stand-out scores in happiness (84 per cent of Gen Z say they're happy living there) and affordability (71 per cent say it's a budget-friendly city to live in). Rounding out the top five behind Melbourne were Cape Town, New York City and Copenhagen. The only other Aussie city to make the global top 20 list was Sydney, coming in at 11th. Together review — a wickedly effective horror satire

We seem to be in a purple patch of ambitious 'risk-taking' cinema set pieces. With The Naked Gun reboot it was the moment when the entire movie swerved sideways into a nutty film-within-a-film about a deranged snowman. In last week's Weapons it was the unexpected black comedy in the final act (kids + ritualised sparagmos = hilarity). And now, in this wickedly effective horror satire, it's the outrageous midpoint sequence when our two protagonists and 'couple-in-crisis' Tim and Millie (played by real-life marrieds Dave Franco and Alison Brie) are suddenly trapped and grossly melded at the crotch (a supernatural curse is involved) during an impulsive act of intimacy in the children's bathrooms at the school where Millie teaches. They pull, they push, he winces, she yelps, as their cursed organs are seemingly in agony. A loud and hysterical chorus of sympathy howls was, at my screening, the inevitable audience response. • Read more film reviews, guides about what to watch and interviews Tim and Millie, winningly played throughout, have only recently moved from New York City to this tiny upstate hamlet. It's ostensibly for Millie's job, but really it's to revitalise a relationship that's quaking from Tim's lack of self-esteem, his failure as a musician and the recent double-whammy of his father's death and mother's mental breakdown. The beauty of the film and of the screenplay from the novice Australian writer-director Michael Shanks is that it's an unforgiving dissection of co-dependent romantic relationships as well as a giddy and frequently stomach-churning scream-at-the-screen body horror. And so, near the start, during an exploratory hike, Tim and Millie fall into a woodland sinkhole and there consume the mystical potion that propels them, physically, towards each other with the ultimate aim of violently, gorily, mushing their bodies together (see title) into a single mutant uni-being. It's great fun, and the highlights include a jump scare with Millie's hair, the devilish use of a reciprocating saw and an exquisitely funny deployment of the Spice Girls. You will never, in short, listen to 2 Become 1 in the same way again. ★★★★☆15, 102minIn cinemas from Aug 15 Times+ members can enjoy two-for-one cinema tickets at Everyman each Wednesday.
