A left-handed-hitting first baseman, Naylor entered play on Thursday with .292/.360/.447 slash line, with 11 homers and 59 RBI, good enough for a 124 OPS+. His contributions have been worth 1.0 bWAR.
The Cleveland Guardians traded Naylor to Arizona in December ahead of his final year before free agency. In exchange, the Diamondbacks sent pitcher Slade Cecconi and the No. 70 draft pick to Cleveland. Naylor was coming off a season in which he socked a career-high 31 homers and was named to his first All-Star team. This year, however, he has more resembled his 2023 version, with a healthier batting average and on-base percentage, an impressively low strikeout rate and a more modest home run total.

Still, with the Diamondbacks on the periphery of contention and with ace Corbin Burnes on the shelf because of elbow surgery, a rental like Naylor was an obvious trade candidate. Naylor turned 28 in June, so though the free-agent market isn't always kind to first basemen these days, he should be young enough to command a solid, multiyear contract.

The Twins promoted four pitchers and four position players from Triple-A St. Paul before the game. They made nine trades in the 24 hours preceding Thursday's deadline. Gaddis inexplicably threw the ball toward first on Martin's infield hit, instead of holding it, and fired a bouncer past first baseman Santana into right field. Both unearned runs were charged to Erik Sabrowski. The Twins had 25 players in uniform, one less than the roster limit, after exchanging 26 total players during their four-day flurry of transactions. Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (7-9, 4.39 ERA), who has won three straight starts, pitches on Saturday. Twins' RHP Bailey Ober (4-6, 5.28 ERA) will be activated from the injured list after missing a month with left hip impingement.

Iowa Speedway will play host to nearly eight consecutive hours of NASCAR as the Cup and Xfinity series hit the short track Saturday. The action at the 0.875-mile oval will begin at 11 a.m. ET with Xfinity practice, followed immediately by qualifying. J.P. Crawford hits 2-run homer in 9th to lift the Mariners past the Rangers, 4-3
SEATTLE -- J.P. Crawford hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. Dominic Canzone led off the ninth with a single off closer Robert Garcia (1-6), bringing Crawford to the plate. On the third pitch Crawford saw, he sent a 95 mph fastball into the seats in right. Seattle gained another game on AL West-leading Houston and firmed its grip on the third wild-card spot by two games over the Rangers. Rowdy Tellez, Josh Smith and Marcus Semien had RBI hits in the third to give Texas a 3-1 lead. Seattle newcomer Josh Naylor had an opposite-field double in the fifth to cut it to 3-2. Eduard Bazardo (5-0) pitched the ninth for the victory. Crawford's homer in the ninth. Crawford had the first walkoff homer of his major league career. Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22 ERA) was set to make his Rangers debut Saturday, with Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.19 ERA) set to start for the Mariners.
