UGC gives letter of intent to five foreign universities to open campuses in Maharashtra: Fadnavis

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): The University Grants Commission has given a letter of intent to five foreign universities to establish their campuses in Maharashtra, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This is part of the 'Mumbai Rising - Creating an International Education City' initiative. The Chief Minister was speaking to the media after participating in the Granting of Letters of Intent (LOIs) ceremony along with Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Fadnavis said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Education Policy has opened doors for knowledge in India. 'UGC has given a letter of intent to five universities. Their campuses will be constructed in Maharashtra,' Fadnavis told reporters. The five foreign universities, which have been given a letter of intent, are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design. 'The five universities are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design... Under PM Modi, NEP has opened doors for knowledge in India,' the Chief Minister said. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country, offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Meanwhile, the Roads and Traffic Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the flyover connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (Vikhroli West) to the Eastern Express Highway (Vikhroli East). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared a video of the flyover on social media and wrote that during the monsoon, citizens face traffic jams in the area, so the government has ordered that the flyover be opened for the public without waiting for an official ceremony. 'Heartiest congratulations to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for completing the very important 615-meter bridge connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vikhroli to the Eastern Expressway! During the monsoon season, there are often traffic jams on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, causing inconvenience to the citizens. Considering this, I, along with my colleagues Deputy Chief Minister Eknathrao Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajitdada Pawar, have decided to open this bridge for the citizens without waiting for any official ceremony and have also given orders to that effect,' the Chief Minister said. CM Fadnavis added that he began the work for this flyover under his tenure in 2018, and Rs 104.77 have been spent on the project. (ANI)

Ship fire: ICG, Navy and IAF execute high-risk operation; tow burning Singaporean ship away from coast

In a crucial breakthrough in the firefighting and salvage mission of the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503, Indian maritime forces successfully transferred tow control of the distressed container vessel to an ocean-going tug, Offshore Warrior, on 13 June. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), which had been holding the vessel off the Kerala coast for several days, faced a fresh challenge as worsening weather and powerful westerly winds caused the vessel to drift dangerously towards the shoreline. Despite adverse conditions that grounded aerial operations and delayed the salvage team's boarding, a Navy Sea King helicopter from Kochi managed to winch team members onto the vessel under extremely challenging conditions. The team then connected a 600-metre tow line to the Offshore Warrior around 20 nautical miles off Kochi's coast. As per the official statement, the ship is now being towed westwards at a speed of 1.8 knots and is currently 35 nautical miles offshore. Three ICG Offshore Patrol Vessels continue to escort the ship and carry out firefighting efforts. While thick smoke and a few hotspots remain onboard, authorities said a major environmental crisis has likely been averted, crediting the ICG's swift and sustained response. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The ICG is now working closely with the directorate general of shipping to ensure the vessel remains at least 50 nautical miles from Indian shores, until its next course of action is decided by the owners in line with international protocols.

‘Best deal India has ever offered': India-UK trade pact seen as landmark win in UK Parliament; deal hailed for boosting GDP

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) concluded with India places Britain at a 'genuine' competitive advantage in advanced manufacturing sectors, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told the House of Commons during a debate this week. Fielding questions on the scope and benefits of the deal — agreed last month — Reynolds described the FTA as a major economic win for the UK and 'the best deal that India has ever offered'. 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery,' Reynolds said in response to British Sikh Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan, as quoted PTI. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate,' the minister added. The UK government estimates the deal could boost bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) projects a GDP increase of GBP 4.8 billion and wage growth of GBP 2.2 billion per year over the next decade. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cervecería Nacional CFD: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 Empieza a invertir Inscríbete ahora Undo The debate in Parliament comes just ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal is among the high-level speakers expected at the event. UK-India Week will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', an annual analysis by Grant Thornton and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) that maps investment flows from India to the UK. 'Indian companies continue to play a pivotal role in the UK's growth story — from job creation to innovation. This year's tracker showcases their growing diversification, scale and resilience, and reflects the growing maturity and confidence of Indian enterprise on the global stage,' said Anuj Chande, Partner and Head of South Asia Business Group at Grant Thornton. 'Indian businesses are no longer just investing abroad – they are transforming global economies,' said India Global Forum founder Manoj Ladwa. According to last year's report, a record 971 Indian-owned companies were operating in the UK — a number that has continued to rise. With India and the UK now ranked as the fourth and sixth largest economies respectively, the FTA is being seen as a critical pillar in one of the world's most strategic investment corridors.
