Foo Fighters return with first song since Dave Grohl's affair as he pens emotional letter to fans

The Sun2 days ago
TOMORROW marks 30 years since Foo Fighters dropped their debut album, and they've just released their first single since 2023 to celebrate.
They surprised fans yesterday by releasing Today's Song, which is full of optimism about change in the future and personal evolution for the band.

But it is the first we've heard from married frontman Dave Grohl since he shocked fans last September by revealing he had fathered a daughter with another woman.
It seems he has patched things up with his actress wife of 22 years, Jordyn Blum, after they were pictured together at Wimbledon yesterday.
At the same time as the song dropped, Dave released a letter talking about Foo Fighters.
After writing about how the band formed during Thanksgiving in 1994, he explained: 'Over the years, we've had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat.
'We have mended broken bones and broken hearts.
'But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what.
Anthemic vocals
'Because in life, you just can't go it alone.'
The track opens with Dave singing: 'I woke today screaming for change, I knew that I must.
'So, here lies a shadow, ashes to ashes, dust into dust.
'You know that nothing can prepare you. Don't let this cruel world compare you.'
It features crashing percussion and anthemic vocals which are sure to delight fans, although he did not reveal who is playing the drums on the track.
In his letter, Dave paid tribute to original drummer William Goldsmith, former guitarist Franz Stahl and their most recent drummer Josh Freese before honouring Taylor Hawkins — who played drums for the band from 1997 until his death from a drug overdose in Colombia in 2022.
Dave wrote: 'Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile.
'But you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever.
'The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence.
'We all miss you beyond words.
'Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.' Hear hear.

KERRY KEEN TO SLAY 'EM
11
BEFORE Cardiff is overrun with Oasis fans, thrash metallers will today descend on Blackweir Fields for the first of Slayer's three huge shows in the UK.
And guitarist Kerry King, who will also perform at Ozzy Osbourne 's Back To The Beginning show in Birmingham on Saturday, before Slayer play Finsbury Park the following night, tells me the band will be hitting the bottle once the shows end.
'I turned 60 last year, but I still have a good time,' Kerry says, in an exclusive chat.
'I still don't drink before I play because I feel like I owe the fans the best they can see. There's no fun until after the show.
'There's still vodka on the rider, there's still tequila, there's still Jagermeister and there's still beer.
'But it's not anybody's mission to drink it all that night like maybe it used to be.'
Kerry is looking forward to the band's shows as he says there is something special about British fans.
He explains: 'I'm not saying it doesn't happen in America, but the UK crowd – it's going to be a frenzy, like, controlled chaos.'
Kerry has been sworn to secrecy by Sharon Osbourne about what Black Sabbath song Slayer will perform on Saturday, but he says he would have moved heaven and earth to make Ozzy's final show.
'To be part of that line-up with some of the greatest bands ever in hard rock and metal, it's surreal,' Kerry says.
'I'm excited to see what Metallica does, what Pantera does, what Lzzy Hale does.
'I'm looking forward to Alice In Chains and I know K.K. Downing is doing something.
'I'll be fully engaged as a fan right up until it's time for me to warm up and go on the stage.'
Since their debut in 1981, Slayer have become one of the most influential thrash metal groups on the planet.
But their decision to push boundaries with their lyrics and album art – which has covered everything from serial killers, religion and terrorism to fascism – has seen some of their albums banned in certain countries.
While Slayer have confirmed they won't be releasing new material, Kerry has been hard at work on the follow-up to his first solo record, From Hell I Rise, which came out last year.
And he admits the changing nature of the world, and how easily people are offended now, does affect the way he writes.
Kerry explains: 'All I can speak of is in America, because that's where I live and what I know, and it seems like every day the government tries to take away things. What was OK to say five years ago, now it's not. Freedom of speech has changed over the past few years.
'When I write my new album, I'm not sure what I'm going to try to address because I'm not sure what they're going to try to take me to jail for.'
DUA'S HOL LOTTA LOVE
11
DUA LIPA has jetted off on yet another holiday with fiancé Callum Turner after completing the European leg of her Radical Optimism tour.
She shared snaps of herself sunbathing and posing with her actor partner, while enjoying some down time in Napoli.
The Training Season singer has been mocked for her habit of going on constant trips abroad, but wouldn't we all be the same if we could?
Earlier this month, she said: 'People do really love to joke about the fact that I'm always on holiday.
'I'm not always on holiday – I just make everything I do feel like a holiday.'
This certainly looks like one.
GRACE: I BELIEVE IN LLOYISO
THE sun is shining and Clean Bandit have the perfect tune to go with that in their new single Believe.
Ahead of its release tomorrow, I've been given an early listen to the track, which made me feel like I was already on a scorching beach with a cocktail in hand.
The band, teamed up with rising South African star Lloyiso, whose incredibly soulful voice soars over the group's beats.
On how it came about, Grace Chatto said: 'We met Lloyiso in Johannesburg a few years ago. I met his friends, The Imports, who invited me to their house to write some songs.
'I was supposed to fly home but I decided to stay, impulsively. Lloyiso walked in and just sang, at the top of his lungs. It was so moving – I've never ever heard anything like it in my life.'
MAT'S UP TO PARTY
GAVIN & Stacey star Mathew Horne must be exhausted.
The actor was spotted living the high life at Wimbledon on Tuesday, where he enjoyed a swanky buffet in the exclusive Evian suite alongside his wife, set designer Celina Bassili.
Just hours before, he had been partying at Glastonbury and checking out sets from singer/songwriter Beth Gibbons and The Maccabees.
Bizarre's Jack was also there post-Glasto and he's knackered, too.
So hopefully the rest of Mathew's week is a bit more chilled.
SINGER WILLOW BLISSED OUT WITH ACTOR MATT
US singer Willow Avalon has confirmed she is dating Criminal Minds actor Matthew Gray Gubler.
In an exclusive chat backstage following her set at American Express Presents BST Hyde Park, Willow told me her fellow Yank was whisking her off on a romantic holiday.
'We're actually going to Paris tomorrow,' Willow said.
'He's really excited to show me around. I have three days off – so three days of bliss – because I don't have much time over the next three months, so we've locked it in.'
The pair were VIP guests at country star Zach Bryan's BST after-show party and were spotted hanging out at the nearby Golden Lion pub on Sunday with their pals.
Opening up about how she prepared before going on stage, Willow let me in on her secret, explaining: 'I love regular Lays potato chips because if you eat those right before you go on, the oil coats your throat and it helps your voice.
'I have that with hummus.'
I'll give that a try next time I'm doing drunken karaoke.
RITA TURNS UP HEAT
SHE has just released a single called Heat and Rita Ora was dressed for just that as the UK basked in a heatwave.
The Brit singer wore tiny pink and red shorts, along with white heels and pink shades, as she posed for Music Numero magazine.
And on the cover, perched on a motorbike, right, Rita looked stunning in black hotpants and a matching hooded crop top.
The trendy shoot comes ahead of her fourth album, the follow-up to 2023's You & I, which it is hoped will be out this year.
Of the record, she said: 'The album is brave and in your face. It's ignorant without being arrogant.
'There is a world of ignorance where you are confident but happy and really proud of what you're doing, but without coming across as arrogant and rude.'
PETE HITS THE ROOF IN LOFTY GIG
11
PETE DOHERTY embraced the hottest day of the year on Tuesday by performing a live gig in central London for Virgin Radio.
He played a belting set for its Live At The Top Of The Tower segment, on the 14th floor roof terrace of The News Building – where Virgin and The Sun are based.
And my team got a surprise at the office canteen a few hours before his set, where they found the star topless and getting some grub with one of his kids.
It came just 48 hours after Pete and his band The Libertines performed on Glasto's Pyramid Stage, so the intimate rooftop gig was a very special moment for fans who managed to nab tickets.
Stay tuned to Virgin for your chance to get into future gigs.

Wimbledon diary: Portuguese tributes and champagne cork stops play

Following the death of Liverpool's Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva earlier in the week, Portuguese players Francisco Cabral and Nuno Borges both wore black ribbons on court at Wimbledon on Friday. Jota was part of the Portuguese national squad and his compatriots were able to bend the all-white dress rules in SW19 to pay tribute to the 28-year-old. Cabral said: 'I asked for permission to use the black ribbon and they let me play with it. 'It was an honour – it was not for the best reason. He was an inspiration not only for me but for the country in general.' ***** In one of those 'could only happen at Wimbledon' moments, Amanda Anisimova was interrupted by the popping of a champagne cork during her third-round win on Court Three. The American was visibly annoyed and the umpire had to remind fans about their etiquette when players are about to serve. Afterwards, the 13th seed said: 'It kept happening. At some point I was, like, 'Can everybody just do it on the changeover?' 'It was a bit rowdy on that court, too, because you could hear everyone on the sides that are, like, outside of the court. It was definitely a bit distracting.' ***** Heavyweight British boxer Anthony Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn were present in the Royal Box on Friday, joined by former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker. Dame Mary Berry, previously of The Great British Bake Off, was in attendance, and so too was Irish actress and writer Sharon Horgan, star of Bad Sisters and co-creator of Motherland. Astronaut Major Tim Peake was another guest, with physicist and musician Brian Cox taking a seat alongside chef Marcus Wareing. ***** Quote of the day 'I think every tennis player talks to themselves. That's why we're all kind of crazy.' – Naomi Osaka on her inner dialogue during her third-round loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Picture of the day Saturday's match of the day Novak Djokovic's quest for a 25th grand slam title will continue on Centre Court, where the 38-year-old will face fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. Both were born in Belgrade, with the 25-year-old Kecmanovic playing at the tournament for the fourth time and trying to better the third-round finish he achieved in both 2022 and 2024. Djokovic knocked out his Davis Cup teammate the last time they met – in SW19 three years ago – and has won all three meetings. And with Djokovic stating that this tournament is likely to be his best chance of gaining the grand slam title he needs to surpass Margaret Court's all-time record, Kecmanovic will require an inspired display to be the last Serb standing. Saturday's weather forecast Overcast with highs of 22C, according to the Met Office.

Michael Madsen's shell-shocked son and estranged wife rush to Reservoir Dogs star's home after his death at 67

Michael Madsen's heartbroken family rushed to the late actor's Malibu home on Thursday just hours after his shocking passing at age 67. The Reservoir Dogs star was found 'unresponsive' inside his residence early Thursday morning, with his manager reporting 'cardiac arrest' as the cause of death. Madsen's estranged wife DeAnna, 64 — who he accused of driving their 26-year-old son Hudson to suicide — looked shell-shocked in photos obtained by as she arrived at the house they once shared. A brunette man, who looked to be Madsen's son Max, 31, appeared to console his longtime stepmom DeAnna as she spoke to him in the driveway. Standing beside them was Madsen's eldest son Christian, 35, who hid his grief behind a pair of dark-tinted sunglasses. After connecting with DeAnna, the two brothers, who were born during Madsen's relationship with ex-wife Jeannine Bisignano, 68, ventured around their late father's property together. Madsen's youngest son Luke, 19, was also spotted at the scene. Madsen's youngest son Luke, 19, was also spotted at the scene The teenager, donning a cowboy hat, was photographed exiting the home's garage as a black Chrysler vehicle, seemingly belonging to the coroner, backed into it. Luke is one of three sons — including Kalvin, 28, who was not pictured at the house on Thursday, and the late Hudson, 26 — Madsen shares with wife DeAnna. An eyewitness told that Luke eventually left the Malibu home with his brothers Max and Christian in a black Ford Bronco. A white Range Rover was also pictured in the driveway on Thursday. It's unclear if DeAnna is still at the residence. Madsen was found 'unresponsive' at his Malibu home early Thursday morning, can confirm. Deputies responded to the Los Angeles County home after a 911 call early Thursday. Madsen was pronounced dead at the home. The star's manager claimed to that Madsen had died from 'cardiac arrest.' His lawyer said the actor - known for his roles in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill - was battling an alcohol addiction before he tragically died. Hours after his death, obtained exclusive photos of Madsen's heartbroken family — including his estranged wife DeAnna — gathering outside his house. A man who looked to be Madsen's son Max, 31, consoled DeAnna while standing in the home's driveway as more family members arrived. Madsen's eldest son Christian, 35, and his youngest son Luke, 19, also appeared to be at the scene. A statement from the star's representatives to read: 'In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives, and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life. 'Madsen was also preparing to release a new book called Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems. 'Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many.' Madsen was best known for his frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino, starring in Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He also starred in 1997's Donnie Brasco as Sonny Black. Madsen is survived by his five children, wife DeAnna and his actress sister Virginia Madsen. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022 aged 26. Perry Wander, who has represented the star for 20 years, said the Kill Bill icon had 'many struggles'. 'I just spoke to Michael two days ago,' Wander told Daily Mail, admitting that 'I knew he was not well.' 'Michael was suffering from the effects of alcoholism. He had multiple stints in and out of rehab. He struggled to maintain his sobriety. He was not happy about his life.' Madsen was also facing a crippling legal battle with his estranged wife, which saw the pair fighting over child support and other finances, his lawyer claimed. 'I blame her for putting in the screws over his last years of life,' Wander said, alleging the legal battle, which saw his passport be 'maliciously revoked', impacted his ability to travel and work abroad. 'Michael lived a life of regrets - those regrets being his two marriages,' he added. Virginia paid emotional tribute to Madsen in a statement to Variety, which read: 'My brother Michael has left the stage. He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother — etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark. 'We're not mourning a public figure. We're not mourning a myth — but flesh and blood and ferocious heart. Who stormed through life loud, brilliant, and half on fire. Who leaves us echoes — gruff, brilliant, unrepeatable — half legend, half lullaby. 'I'll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him. I'll miss the boy he was before the legend; I miss my big brother. Thank you to everyone reaching out with love and memory. In time, we'll share how we plan to celebrate his life — but for now, we stay close, and let the silence say what words can't.' He was first wed to Georganne LaPiere, half-sister of singer and actress Cher from 1984-1988. He welcomed a daughter named Jessica with Dana Mechling. He was married to Jeannine Bisignano from 1991 to 1995. They have two sons, Christian and Max. In 1996, he married DeAnna. Together they had three sons, Luke, Kalvin and Hudson. His death comes 11 months after his domestic violence case - where he was accused of shoving wife DeAnna - was dismissed due to 'insufficient evidence.' 'We are thrilled that Michael Madsen is able to put this behind him and look forward to our continued collaboration with more great things coming from this veteran and respected actor,' his representative said at the time. The star was arrested for domestic violence amid claims he got physical with his spouse. He also allegedly locked her out of their home, which is located in the Los Angeles area. The Reservoir Dogs star was given a misdemeanor domestic violence charge at the time. He also had to spend part of his weekend in jail, before posting a $20,000 bond. Days later in a statement to THR, Madsen's lawyer Perry Wander insisted that his client was 'not guilty of domestic violence.' A representative for the star confirmed the incident saying: 'It was a disagreement between Michael and his wife, which we hope resolves positively for them both.' Madsen filed for divorce from DeAnna in September 2024 - and in court papers obtained by he accused his estranged wife of driving their son to die by suicide 'by her neglect, drinking and alcoholism.' A month later, he issued a regretful Instagram statement apologizing for his claims and denying he had wanted to end their marriage. He said: 'Losing a child is the hardest and most painful experience that can happen in this world. I deeply apologize for not correcting this earlier but I love my wife and our other 4 children and have no desire for divorce or blame. Madsen filed for divorce from DeAnna in September 2024 - and in court papers obtained by he accused his estranged wife of driving their son to die by suicide 'by her neglect, drinking and alcoholism'; the couple seen in 2005 'She had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to our son. It was a horrible loss and choice that was made for reasons that truly cannot ever be known because the person is gone, I don't think my son is dead , I think he escaped from a life that didn't make sense anymore.' It wasn't Madsen's first brush with the law. In 2022 the Hollywood actor was arrested for trespassing at a luxury house from which he was evicted, reported. It was a $5.3 million Malibu mansion just across the Pacific Coast Highway from La Costa Beach. A source exclusively told at the time: 'Michael had been living at the house since last year, but the lease was in another person's name.' The house was leased out by another person and several thousand dollars were owed in back rent, has learned. The owner had tried for the past two years to get the tenants evicted, but because of the moratorium on evictions on account of Covid, it took several months to go through the legal process. His arrest came just a month after his son, US Army Sgt. Hudson Madsen shot himself dead on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where he was stationed with the 25th Infantry Division. Hudson was an Afghan war vet. Hudson's death came a week after his wife Carlie underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her breast. 'I am in shock as my son, whom I just spoke with a few days ago, said he was happy - my last text from him was "I love you dad,"' he told the Los Angeles Times. 'I didn't see any signs of depression. It's so tragic and sad. I'm just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened.' Madsen said his son's marriage was 'going strong' and he had recently completed his first tour in the U.S. Army. 'He had typical life challenges that people have with finances, but he wanted a family. He was looking towards his future, so its mind-blowing. I just can't grasp what happened.' Madsen has requested a full military investigation into his son's death. The actor thinks 'the officers and rank and file were shaming' Hudson for wanting therapy. He believes this stopped him from seeking help for mental health issues he had been keeping to himself. In 2019, the actor was axed from a $100,000 role in movie Confessions of a Serial Killer after crashing his Land Rover into a pole and subsequently being arrested for DUI. He was later sentenced to four days in jail. In 2012 he was also arrested for DUI after driving erratically but struck a plea deal that involved attending AA meetings in lieu of more severe punishment. However, after Madsen failed to attend his court ordered Alcoholics Anonymous meetings his probation was revoked. That same year he was arrested at his Malibu home after allegedly getting into a physical fight with his son after catching him smoking marijuana. The actor was being held in jail on $100,000 bail after being charged with child endangerment with cruelty to a child: a felony charge, which means it is considered a crime of high seriousness. He did not face any charges after his arrest for suspected child endangerment.

Disneyland announces closing date for beloved attraction during 70th anniversary celebration

Disneyland has announced that The Haunted Mansion will close temporarily this summer as part of its 70th anniversary season. The closure is set to begin on Monday, August 11. But, thankfully for fans, the popular ride is expected to return just 11 days later, reopening on August 22 in its seasonal form as Haunted Mansion Holiday. This special version features a makeover inspired by Tim Burton 's The Nightmare Before Christmas. While Disneyland has not officially stated the reason for the August closure, the timeline matches up with past years when the ride transforms into a holiday-theme. Haunted Mansion Holiday typically remains open through both Halloween and Christmas, and is scheduled to run until January 7, 2026. In 2024, the holiday version of the attraction opened earlier than usual in July. That early debut followed a lengthy closure that allowed Disneyland to complete several major updates to the ride. Enhancements included a more accessible elevator for guests with disabilities, revamped landscaping around the attraction, and the debut of Madame Leota's Somewhere Beyond gift shop. When the original Haunted Mansion returned in early 2025, guests were introduced to a newly updated version of the Bride, one of the ride's key characters. Though Haunted Mansion Holiday features the same general decorations each year, one element that changes annually is the gingerbread house in the ballroom scene. This centerpiece is custom-built and remains a fan favorite. The temporary closure of such a beloved ride is not unusual, especially during seasonal transitions, but still typically upsets fans regardless, as some plan their visit specifically for the Haunted Mansion. That being said, fans of the original Haunted Mansion have just over a month left to experience the classic version before the holiday takeover begins. For those who prefer the spooky charm of the holiday edition, the August 22 reopening will mark the return of Jack Skellington, Zero, and other familiar faces from The Nightmare Before Christmas. The Haunted Mansion remains one of Disneyland's most iconic attractions, and both versions continue to draw long lines and loyal fans year-round. Guests planning a visit in August should keep the closure dates in mind, as the ride will be unavailable for nearly two weeks. Despite the temporary closure, Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration will include plenty of other attractions, entertainment, and limited-time experiences across the park. According to Disneyland blogs, this includes a new theme song by the Jonas Brothers and a new 'World of Color' show. As with all seasonal changes, dates are subject to change, and guests are encouraged to check the Disneyland website for the latest updates. Whether you're a fan of the traditional Haunted Mansion or the festive Haunted Mansion Holiday, 2025 offers the chance to enjoy both versions during a milestone year for the park.
