Florida Democrats file bill to block federal funds to Alligator Alcatraz

Miami Herald4 days ago
Florida's Democratic congressional delegation has introduced legislation aimed at shutting down the controversial immigration detention center in the Everglades.
Dubbed the 'No Cages in the Everglades Act,' the six-page bill is led by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston. It aims to ban the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement from operating or funding the detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz, or any other 'immigration detention facility located within or adjacent to the Everglades ecosystem.'
The bill also seeks to increase transparency and federal oversight of immigration detention centers nationwide.
'Trump and Ron DeSantis have exploited legal ambiguity around this Everglades internment camp to avoid any scrutiny of abuses there,' said Wasserman Schultz in an statement. 'Our bill would shut down this atrocity, strengthen oversight of detention facilities nationwide, and mandate public reporting on costs, conditions, and the treatment of detainees, as well as report on any harms to the environment and nearby tribal lands.'
Wasserman Schultz is joined by fellow Florida Democrats Reps. Kathy Castor, Frederica Wilson, Lois Frankel, Darren Soto, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Maxwell Frost and Jared Moskowitz. The bill is unlikely to gain traction in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
The facility — operated and funded by Florida's state government, with the expectation of federal reimbursement — has drawn sharp criticism from environmental advocates, Miccosukee tribal leaders and human rights groups, who call it both inhumane and ecologically disastrous. Multiple reports allege detainees are being held in unsafe, unsanitary conditions without access to clean water, medical care or legal support. Florida's Division of Emergency Management, which is overseeing the detention center, says those stories are false.

The detention center sits on an airstrip on the edge of the Big Cypress National Preserve, a protected wilderness area that is home to endangered species.
The bill coincides with a rapidly growing MoveOn Civic Action petition demanding the immediate closure of the Everglades detention camp. The petition has now surpassed 43,000 signatures, amplifying public pressure on state and federal officials.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick emphasized the broader moral stakes of the legislation.
'No one should be subjected to unsafe, degrading treatment, and we cannot meet these injustices with silence or symbolic gestures. We have a moral responsibility to act decisively,' Cherfilus-McCormick said. 'Every person in our custody deserves dignity, safety, and basic human rights.'
The legislation has garnered support from major human rights and immigration organizations, including the ACLU, Detention Watch Network, Church World Service and the National Immigration Law Center.
The bill comes just days after Wasserman Schultz, Moskowitz and Frost visited the facility alongside Florida state representatives. The visit followed complaints by detainees and attorneys about conditions inside and a lack of transparency. During the visit, Frost said they were denied permission to speak with any detainees, without explanation. Republicans who took the tour said the facility was clean and properly run.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.

Zohran Mamdani ripped for using ‘Zionist' as punchline — as critics warn NYC mayoral race is at ‘code red situation'

Israel-bashing Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is catching flak again — for once using 'Zionist' as the punchline to an insulting joke, critics claim. Jewish New Yorkers were outraged over the recently resurfaced video of the mayoral race frontrunner speaking before the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023. 'If you don't clap for El-Yateem,' Mamdani said, 'You're a Zionist!' 3 A newly resurfaced video shows Zohran Mamdani calling someone a 'Zionist' as a punchline to an insulting joke. YouTube/Democratic Socialists of America He was referring to Lutheran pastor and Palestinian community organizer Khader El-Yateem, who ran unsuccessfully for a Brooklyn City Council seat in 2017. Mamdani, the 33-year-old Queens assemblyman, then said, 'It's a joke, you don't have to clap.' But Israel supporters weren't laughing. 'The turning of 'Zionist' into a slur in mainstream western liberal spaces is the most significant antisemitic development of the 21st century,' said podcaster Blake Flayton, who posted the video on X. 'This man is about to be mayor of New York,' said Flayton, host of 'We Should All Be Zionists,' of the Democratic nominee. 'I don't think people yet understand how much of a code red situation this is. The severity of the moment,' he added. 3 The Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City was seen speaking at an event for the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023 when he made the insensitive remark. Instagram/@zohrankmamdani Others defended Mamdani, noting he clearly said he was joking. But Flayton was having none of it. 'It's not funny — racist/antisemitic jokes are not funny,' he posted. Todd Richman, co-founder of Democratic Majority for Israel, responded, 'Disgusting.' Every morning, the NY POSTcast offers a deep dive into the headlines with the Post's signature mix of politics, business, pop culture, true crime and everything in between. Subscribe here! 'Enough of the 'l'll protect the Jewish community.' I'm sorry but I don't believe him,' Richman continued. 'He has been perpetuating an anti-Zionist and therefore anti Jewish agenda since college. Now all of a sudden he is going to change?' Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis, said to add Mamdani's 'You're a Zionist' quip to the pile of comments and positions that the City Hall hopeful will have to explain, particularly to the Jewish community. 'He has to address comments he has made in the past that are controversial — and in some cases offensive,' Potasnik told The Post Tuesday. 3 Mamdani was referring to Khader El-Yateem, a Lutheran pastor and Palestinian community organizer, when making the joke, as he told the audience, 'It's a joke, you don't have to clap.' Facebook/Khader El-Yateem New York City has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, most of whom are pro-Israel or Zionists, said Potasnik, adding of Mamdani: 'We're going to hold him accountable.' Former Queens Councilman Rory Lancman also highlighted Mamdani's history of anti-Israel statements and positions. 'Deploying 'Zionist' as an epithet comes naturally to someone like Mr. Mamdani who fundamentally, and unabashedly, opposes the right of the Jewish people — and only the Jewish people — to self-determination, freedom, and safety in their ancestral homeland, and demands of every Jew that they renounce this central aspect of their Jewish identity as the price for social and political acceptance into civil society,' said Lancman. 'Mamdani believes deeply that every Jew must bend the knee.' During his 2023 speech, Mamdani praised the DSA for backing the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel. 'We mean what we say when we say we have a socialist politic. It is consistent, it is universal, and it stands for justice in every place with no exception,' he said. The Anti-Defamation League calls the BDS movement antisemitic for seeking to undermine the world's only Jewish state. Mamdani is a supporter of the boycott movement against Israel, even leading a pro-Palestinian rally chanting 'BDS!' and criticizing other elected officials for visiting the Jewish state. The DSA was an an early endorser of Mamdani for mayor and the backbone of his successful Democratic primary campaign. The candidate has been on a charm offensive since defeating ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other Dem hopefuls in the primary last month. He has been seeking to expand his base of support for the November general election, meeting with business bigwigs, party leaders and Jewish officials. His campaign declined to comment on the 'You're a Zionist' line. Mamdani has come under fire for refusing to condemn the phrase 'globalize the intifada.' After meeting with Jewish elected officials, he said he now discourages people from using the rallying call. Mamdani also previously faced criticism for appearing to defend al Qaeda fiend Anwar al-Awlaki — and blaming America for turning the prostitution-loving cleric into a terrorist in 2015 tweets.

Massie vows Trump's threats to primary him will ‘backfire tremendously'

Rep. Thomas Massie's (R-Ky.) vowed that President Trump's threats to primary him will 'backfire tremendously' and ultimately lead to Republicans losing their House majority in the 2026 midterms. 'Well, they've spent $1.8 billion against me so far in my congressional district. I think it has had very little effect, but they are trying to beat up on me to keep everyone else in line here and I think it is not working. I think what's gonna happen, this will be a referendum on whether the executive branch controls the legislative branch,' Massie said during a Tuesday interview with NBC News. 'I am going to prevail. What they are going to find out is it will embolden members of Congress here to go with their heart, with their minds, with their constituents and not just toe the party line,' Massie told NBC' Sahil Kapur. Trump's political operation has launched a targeted campaign seeking to oust Massie, who has regularly criticized the administration and refused to support its legislative agenda. Kapur asked Massie if he thought the president's effort 'will backfire in the next two years.' 'I think it's gonna backfire tremendously,' Massie said. 'Number one, I think they are wasting millions of dollars against me and they are going to lose the majority because of that, but number two, I think it will embolden Republicans who are right now quietly agreeing with me, but saying 'I am afraid of winning my primary, let's see if you can win yours Massie.'' Trump called the Kentucky lawmaker the 'worst Republican Congressman, and an almost guaranteed NO VOTE each and every time, is an Embarrassment to Kentucky' the president said in a Monday night post on Truth Social, linking to an anti-Massie ad released by pro-Trump PAC MAGA Kentucky. 'He's lazy, slow moving, and totally disingenuous – A real loser! Never has anything positive to add. Looking for someone good to run against this guy, someone I can Endorse and vigorously campaign for,' Massie was one of two House Republicans who voted against the president's 'big, beautiful bill' and has previously denounced the U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 21, earning him rebukes from Trump and his allies. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stopped short on Tuesday from endorsing Massie, saying 'bless his heart' when asked about his push for a bipartisan measure calling for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and late, disgraced financier. 'Some people seem to enjoy trying to inflict political pain on their own teammates. I'm not going to address anybody individually, but I'll tell you that some here are much more frustrated than others,' Johnson said during a press conference on Tuesday. 'One in particular just gives me lots of consternation. I don't understand. I don't understand Thomas Massie's motivation, I really don't,' the House speaker added. 'I don't know how his mind works, I don't know what he's thinking.'

The Democrats have an Epstein problem of their own

Belonging to a political party is a lot like being a college football fan. When the other side wins, you are convinced that they didn't do it honestly. When they are accused of cheating, you proclaim them guilty immediately. And if they are guilty, you advocate for the worst possible punishments, including the death penalty. But when it's your party or team, you do everything to minimize, deflect and deny. You then proclaim the rules weren't fair and when you get hit with a punishment, you are clearly being persecuted unfairly. Trust me, I am an Ohio State Buckeyes fan and a Democrat. As President Trump continues to deal with the fallout of his broken promise to release the Epstein files, Democrats have been trying to take advantage of his mishandling of the matter. While it remains to be seen just how badly this affair will hurt Trump and the Republicans in the midterms, current polling shows that only 17 percent of all voters and 40 percent of Republicans approve of his handling of the matter. Add to that the Wall Street Journal's story on Trump's letter to Epstein drawing more scrutiny to their relationship and you would think that the Democrats, at long last can finally have something that might penetrate Trump's seemingly invincible armor. But there is one major issue the Democrats need to come to terms with. They have people associated with Epstein too. And if they really want the Epstein files fallout to stay centered on Trump, they need to act sooner than later. Now, this is not a 'both sides are bad' argument but instead a warning that this situation can easily be turned into a both sides argument by the Republicans. We know that Jeffrey Epstein had many friends in high places which included politicians, business tycoons, celebrities and other big names. It stands to reason that some of these people are Democrats. Now I have to stress, just because you had a relationship with Epstein, doesn't mean you committed crimes. I also have to stress that even with the Wall Street Journal publication, there is no evidence of Trump committing any crimes. But like college football, you don't have to actually cheat to be considered a cheater. The Democrats need to be rock solid and unified in this situation. And that means taking the ammo out of the gun before it's used to shoot you. You have to expect that what ever Trump finally chooses to release will only paint the Democrats in a bad way. His attempt to call the files a Democratic hoax penned by Barack Obama, Joe Biden and company failed. So his next step will be to release only the files that will paint the Democrats badly. The Democratic establishment needs to come out before this and disavow any Democratic politician, donor or associate who may be named. Sounds easy, except for the fact that the Democrats have former presidents on down associated with Epstein. Every senator, governor, representative, and DNC official should say they will disavow any Democrat that committed nefarious acts abetted by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. But then they need to challenge the Republicans to do the same on their end. The Republicans will balk because there is one guy we know for sure they won't disavow: the current president. MAGA supporters want there to be a conspiracy that protects the elites, but only if said elites are Democrats. And the Democrats need to make clear they will not protect anyone who is involved in this case who committed a crime. This is important because it would undermine any 'both sides' argument that will surely arise when the files are released. Some people might argue that the Democrats should do nothing, but I would tell you that the Democratic Party has gone out of its way to be hypocritical and it has come back to haunt them many times over. The best example of this is the aforementioned former president. Bill Clinton's affairs during his time as governor of Arkansas and president were diminished and defended by the Democratic establishment during his impeachment. Gloria Steinem's now infamous defense of Clinton was the perfect example of this. While Clinton survived impeachment, the stigma stayed. So, when Hillary Clinton took Donald Trump to task over his 'Access Hollywood' tape, Trump and company had plenty of ammo to argue the Democrats didn't seem to care about women either. It worked. Trump has time and time again weathered storms because he is adept at accusing his accusers of doing the same things he has. There is no reason to believe that this time will be different. Trump has his back against the ropes and needs to 'prove' the deep state and Epstein clients are only Democrats. The only solution is for the Democrats to show unity and proclaim that anyone who committed crimes, regardless of affiliation, would not be protected by the party. In doing so, they would finally be able to break the 'both sides' counter argument that is bound to be headed their way. Doing so will allow the Epstein fallout to hurt the only person trying to prevent its fallout, Donald Trump.
