Netflix viewers rediscover 00s sci-fi thriller with 'unexpected' twist
Directed by The Crow filmmaker Alex Proyas, the film stars Cage as MIT professor John Koestler, who stumbles across a time capsule containing a seemingly prophetic string of numbers.
Discovering that these numbers correlate to major disasters over the past 50 years – including September 11 and Hurricane Katrina – John is quick to notice that the list is almost at an end.
With a devastating solar flare on the horizon, John realises that this impending cataclysm could be the world's last – and he faces a race against time to get himself and his son (Chandler Canterbury) to safety before it's too late.
Co-starring Rose Byrne and Andor star Ben Mendelsohn, Knowing has been largely forgotten by those not in the know… until now.

It has resonated with audiences since being added to Netflix on April 15, many of whom are discovering its wild twist ending for the first time.
In some respects, Knowing was a film ahead of its time, having garnered a less-than-favourable score of 35 from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
While many highlighted its 'cool' ideas and tense aeroplane disaster sequence, most critics dismissed it as a missed opportunity.
With these caveats in mind, Nigel Floyd of Time Out described it as 'compelling,' while Advocate's John Wirt called it 'imperfect but effective.'
Meanwhile, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw had much praise for that ending, saying: 'Some movies, however unpromising, can be saved by a great ending. Here is one.'
Since its release, the film has achieved something of a renaissance, with fans on a Reddit thread discussing its undeserved bad reputation.
'Neat ideas, some genuinely creepy sequences, and a quality Nic Cage performance,' wrote Dottsterisk.
'I appreciated that the film-makers stuck with what they established until the end,' said Detroit_Cineaste of the film's shocking ending.
'This movie put the fear of death in me. Seriously, I never thought about it that hard before seeing this. Afterwards, thinking about dying makes me sick and terrified. Thinking about it too long is bound to send me into a panic attack,' recalled snapthesacc.
'The ending is a very good part of the movie imo,' said batsofburden.
In the 16 years since Knowing's release, the film's star has only grown more unpredictable in his old age. More Trending
Mocked at the time for his penchant for starring in silly sci-fi thrillers and straight-to-DVD action films, he's gone on to dial up the craziness – appearing in the likes of Mandy, Prisoners of the Ghostland, Willy's Wonderland and Renfield, to name but a few.
This month, he stars in the modern Ozploitation feature The Surfer, in which he stars as a man at the end of his tether, descending into madness and mania when he's accosted by a gang of beach bros on an idyllic Australian beachfront.
Knowing is streaming on Netflix UK now.

Netflix's 10-part series already renewed for season two could be your next favourite show
The series has been given a second season from Netflix and the first isn't released A 10-part Netflix series already renewed for a second season could be your next favourite ever show on the platform. The entire series of Long Story Short will be released on August 22. There may be some who have never even heard of it but there are a few good reasons why you should become familiar. An article on Netflix's Tudum website has already declared that the show could become your next favourite. It is one of a number of new adult animated titles making their debut on the streamer in 2025. That includes the upcoming Haunted Hotel from a writer of Rick and Morty as well as Big Mouth creators' follow up called Mating Season. But what is Long Story Short? What is it about? Who was it created by? Why should you watch it and who is in the star studded voice cast? Here's everything you need to know. What is Long Story Short about? Long Story Short is an adult animated comedy series about one family, over time. What really sets the series apart is that these key events in the Schwooper family is not told chronologically. Instead, viewers will be taken back and forth through time, jumping through the years, following the siblings from childhood, through to teenage angst to adulthood and back again. There will even be stops to check in on moments from their parents' lives when they were younger. It will all help in chronicling their triumphs, disappointments, joys, and compromises. Why should you watch Long Story Short? The show is created by writer, comedian and voice actor Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg. He is probably best known as the creator of celebrated Netflix series Bojack Horseman. Those who enjoyed that show should be well placed to fall in love with Long Story Short. The series is expected to carry just as much of an emotive punch, albeit without humanoid animal characters. Bojack Horseman ran for six seasons and followed a humanoid horse, once the star of a 90s sitcom and now lost in a sea of self-loathing and booze but decides it's time for a comeback. It boasts an overall rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has set a high expectation for Long Story Short, which it actually could well meet. As one fan said of Bojack: "One of the best animated shows with a spectacular story that makes you fall in love with every character and feel for them as they change. Sad to hear about the early cancellation but the ending doesn't suffer for it at all. Best show on Netflix" Who is in the cast of Long Story Short? Long Story Short's cast list is stacked with recognisable voices from film and television, predominately those known for their comedy chops. That includes the main cast and guest stars set to make brief appearances in the odd episode. All House star Lisa Edelstein Paul Reiser, known for roles in Stranger Things and Curb Your Enthusiasm Superstore and Mad Men actor Ben Feldman Abbi Jacobson who has previously appeared in Broad City, Disenchantment and No Good Deed. New Girl star Max Greenfield Angelique Cabral from Life in Pieces Nicole Byer who has appeared in Brooklyn Nine Nine, Invincible and hosted Netflix series Nailed It! Celebrated voice actress Michaela Dietz known for Steven Universe and Adventure Time along with Dave Franco are both recurring guest stars. Other notable stars set to make cameos include Scrubs star Zach Braff and Gina Rodriguez. Will there be a season two of Long Story Short? Amazingly, well ahead of its Netflix debut, the series has already been renewed by the company for a second season. This is quite the achievement for any show, as some of the most popular titles among fans still await to find out their fate. Talking to website Tudum about the news, show creator Bob-Waksberg cheekily said: "Wow! A Season 2?! And Season one hasn't even come out yet! It must be a REALLY good show. I can't wait to watch it when it premieres on Netflix, Friday, Aug. 22! Let's all do that!'

However, their romance spectacularly blew up when Love Island USA's Carrington Rodriguez told him she had slated their connection to him, saying Scott was "too immature" for her. Rather than confront her, Scott and Carrington opted to immediately walk off the show together – in the process ensuring Juliette would be axed from the show as well, as you can only remain in the house if you're in a couple. However, nearly a year after the show was filmed, it seems the pair have healed their connection, performing a TikTok together on Juliette's socials. Surrounded by other members of the Perfect Match cast, including Carrington, the duo were seen passionately lipsyncing to Beyoncé's Tyrant to each other outside a bar. With Juliette having a drink in her hand, she at one point pulls Scott's head to her chest, and he responds by grabbing her face, seemingly trying to pull in for a kiss she pulls away from. Although the TikTok was posted five days before the finale – which saw their dramatic fallout – fans are unconvinced that they're now a couple. "after watching the finale and now seeing this, i'm just laughing so hard," wrote one. "Scott will do anything for attention," wrote a second, while a third said: "You deserve each other and I mean that in the worst way possible." However others thought they were "made to be a couple", with one noting: "They have to be dating as he's had a style upgrade". Love Island fans 'work out' show star is 'in talks for The Traitors series 3' after he accidentally drops massive clue "Please, I need them together," added a third. Scott is yet to confirm any new romance since the end of Perfect Match, which ended last week. However, he has announced that he's "retiring" from dating shows after appearing on Love Island, Love Island USA, Love Island Games and now Perfect Match. Celebrating the finale, he wrote on Instagram: "Anywaysss after 4 TV shows, trips to Fiji, Mallorca and Mexico, and 2 years of incredible memories, it's finally time to say SCOTTISHA IS RETIRED. "Peace out people, hope you all enjoyed the journey. ✌️" 5 Their Perfect Match romance ended when Juliette said Scott was immature
