Netflix viewers rediscover 00s sci-fi thriller with 'unexpected' twist
The 2009 Nicolas Cage movie, Knowing, has climbed the charts this week to become the ninth most-watched film on Netflix in the UK.
Directed by The Crow filmmaker Alex Proyas, the film stars Cage as MIT professor John Koestler, who stumbles across a time capsule containing a seemingly prophetic string of numbers.
Discovering that these numbers correlate to major disasters over the past 50 years – including September 11 and Hurricane Katrina – John is quick to notice that the list is almost at an end.
With a devastating solar flare on the horizon, John realises that this impending cataclysm could be the world's last – and he faces a race against time to get himself and his son (Chandler Canterbury) to safety before it's too late.
Co-starring Rose Byrne and Andor star Ben Mendelsohn, Knowing has been largely forgotten by those not in the know… until now.

It has resonated with audiences since being added to Netflix on April 15, many of whom are discovering its wild twist ending for the first time.
In some respects, Knowing was a film ahead of its time, having garnered a less-than-favourable score of 35 from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
While many highlighted its 'cool' ideas and tense aeroplane disaster sequence, most critics dismissed it as a missed opportunity.
With these caveats in mind, Nigel Floyd of Time Out described it as 'compelling,' while Advocate's John Wirt called it 'imperfect but effective.'
Meanwhile, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw had much praise for that ending, saying: 'Some movies, however unpromising, can be saved by a great ending. Here is one.'
Since its release, the film has achieved something of a renaissance, with fans on a Reddit thread discussing its undeserved bad reputation.
'Neat ideas, some genuinely creepy sequences, and a quality Nic Cage performance,' wrote Dottsterisk.
'I appreciated that the film-makers stuck with what they established until the end,' said Detroit_Cineaste of the film's shocking ending.
'This movie put the fear of death in me. Seriously, I never thought about it that hard before seeing this. Afterwards, thinking about dying makes me sick and terrified. Thinking about it too long is bound to send me into a panic attack,' recalled snapthesacc.
'The ending is a very good part of the movie imo,' said batsofburden.
In the 16 years since Knowing's release, the film's star has only grown more unpredictable in his old age. More Trending
Mocked at the time for his penchant for starring in silly sci-fi thrillers and straight-to-DVD action films, he's gone on to dial up the craziness – appearing in the likes of Mandy, Prisoners of the Ghostland, Willy's Wonderland and Renfield, to name but a few.
This month, he stars in the modern Ozploitation feature The Surfer, in which he stars as a man at the end of his tether, descending into madness and mania when he's accosted by a gang of beach bros on an idyllic Australian beachfront.
Knowing is streaming on Netflix UK now.

Ana de Armas broke down in tears over 'intense' Ballerina flamethrower stunt
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Ana de Armas has revealed that she broke down in tears while filming an 'intense' stunt for her new film, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The 37-year-old is leading the way in the action spin-off of Keanu Reeves' iconic franchise, which hit the big screen today. In the blockbuster, directed by Len Wiseman, she played Eve Macarro, an assassin trained by the Ruska Roma who is on her own journey of revenge over her dad's murder. Unpacking a brutal sequence in which her character used a flamethrower against some bad guys, the James Bond actress explained that she became emotional during the first time she rehearsed the stunt before the cameras started rolling. 'I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine',' she told Entertainment Weekly. 'They got the main fire guy that gets burned, and he's all covered in this sticky grease or whatever they put for protection, and they're like, 'Okay, go ahead. Just burn him.' And I did, and I started crying. 'It was really emotional,' Ana said of the 'intense' scene. 'I've never seen anyone burning, even though it's fake. Thankfully, she was able to gather herself quickly, and continued on with the rehearsal. 'Then I was fine,' she laughed. 'Then I burned like a hundred people. I'm glad I practiced the day before, and I cried the day before. 'But it's amazing to see what [the stunt team] do – I can't believe you guys put yourself through this. It's unbelievable.' 'The fire scene was risky, but we did it,' she added. 'It was all done the right way, and everyone was super careful, and it turned out to be an amazing experience.' After years of waiting, Ballerina is finally in cinemas now and has been met with rave reviews from fans and critics alike – it currently commands a huge audience Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% compared to a critics ranking of 72%. Many on the platform heaped praise on Ana's efforts at leading the latest instalment of the franchise alongside Keanu's John Wick. Andreas Udland wrote: 'Super entertaining. Not one dull or boring scene. Great world building. Ana gives one of her best performances.' 'Ana it's perfect choice for Ballerina,' Ibrahim H wrote. 'This movie is like John wick level, and there action just awesome. Recent pop culture time, it's a great movie, not masterpiece.' 'This movie really moves, it does not let up, this is an extension of the john wick universe. Ana carries this action flick, bring popcorn,' Rick Masters agreed. Has Mercy for None been renewed for Season 2? Here's what we know:
Renewed Or Cancelled? Mercy for None is the latest Netflix K-drama, boasting compelling characters and a bloody, action-packed storyline. This one has been quite the rollercoaster ride over the season! If you've been following this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Well, wonder no more. Here's what we know about a renewal: What is Mercy for None about? 11 years after going into hiding, an ex-gangster called Nam Gi-jun returns to Seoul's criminal underworld to find out the truth about his brother's death — and get some sweet, sweet revenge. His weapon of choice? A baseball bat. We have ongoing coverage of Mercy for None on the site, including recaps for every episode. You can find those HERE! Has Mercy for None been renewed for season 2? At the time of writing, Netflix have not renewed Mercy for None for season 2. Generally Netflix would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show's future is made. So far, Mercy for None has had a good reaction online from critics and audiences alike. Given the way this show is set up, and the ending we receive, we're predicting that this will not be renewed for a second season. Having said that, we do also know that completion rate is a massive metric for these streamers so that could play a pivotal role here. However, it's also rare for these Netflix K-dramas to be renewed – especially when they're labelled as Limited Series like this one is! For now, we'll have to wait and see what happens so take our prediction with a pinch of salt! What we know about season 2 so far: Barely anything is known about season 2 right now. Given most Korean dramas are reserved to one season, it's rare to find these renewed. With the rare exception of ongoing Netflix shows (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce, Hospital Playlist etc.) then it seems unlikely that this one will be renewed. Having said that though, we have seen Taxi Driver and Tale of the Nine Tailed renewed recently, alongside Alchemy of Souls too. Given how steady the ratings are for this series, could we see this one buck the trend? It seems very unlikely that Mercy for None will buck the trend. There is always the possibility that the actors return for a follow-up for a sequel or a spin-off featuring the same characters but considering all of this, we believe this will not be renewed. We generally aim to update this page when more information becomes available. Would you like to see Mercy for None return for a second season? Or do you think the story has run its course? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Emmerdale who helps Robert Sugden 'bring down' villain John 'confirmed'
Emmerdale star Mike Parr teased a possible teaming up twist for his character Ross Barton and Robert Sugden on the ITV soap, amd it might be bad news for killer john Sugden Two characters could team up to take down Emmerdale villain John Sugden, and one of them might be a little unexpected. Robert Sugden is hotly tipped to target his love rival and half-brother John, following John's wedding to his ex Aaron Dingle. Ryan Hawley reprised his role in a major twist six years after he left the show in a recent episode. Robert is soon returning full-time, and fans are so ready for him to possibly uncover the truth about John's crimes, including the murder of Nate Robinson. But will another character team up with Robert and help him target John in a twist? One cast member certainly thinks it would be a good twist when we quizzed them about the possibility of it happening. Mike Parr, who plays Ross Barton, spoke exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards. He teased Ross could tease up with Robert in a separate plot, to possibly pave the way for the return of Robert's son and Ross' stepson Seb. But we took the moment to see how far Ross and Robert teaming up could go, and whether it could lead to the characters trying to bring down killer John. We asked about whether Ross might help Robert to get John, and he said: "Ooh yeah that would be good! If they can take him out to stop him taking other people out. John is always there at the right time, no one's noticed that yet." With Ross actor Mike keen to see the pair join forces, could it lead to a twist with John? As for the plot with Seb, Mike shared: "That was my first question. "I thought surely either we are gonna be fighting over this kid or we will try to get him back. I don't know which I would rather, I mean I tried to shoot him, he stole my weed the last time he was there. "They are always fighting but they might be a good team to work together, and maybe it would be good if they did join forces." Mike also addressed the return of Robert, saying it was exciting for the fans. He shared: "When you get a character who you maybe haven't always been involved with but you know it's gonna be a huge positive for the show, it's going to be huge. For the audience it's so important, and it's someone they're loud over. "I knew that they would be over the moon and I'm so happy for them." Viewers are hoping for a Robron reunion for Robert and Aaron now that they are both back in the village. It's not just viewers though, with stars Natalie J Robb and Bradley Riches clearly backing the reunion too. They told us at the awards: "Hashtag Robron!"
