Next-gen bullet train to debut in India and Japan simultaneously: Railways
The statement comes at a time when the questions are being raised over the delay in finalising the procurement deal for the E5 Shinkansen model which is supposed to run on India's ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail (MAHSR) corridor.
'The Japanese Shinkansen [system] is currently running E5 trains. Next generation trains are E10. In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project. It is noteworthy that E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan,' said the Ministry.
The Ministry claimed there was no delay in the project's execution and that trials would be conducted in 2026-27 as per schedule.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has awarded a tender to state-run BEML Ltd to manufacture two high-speed trainsets, with a test speed of 280 kmph, that will be somewhat similar to the Japanese bullet train.
The Ministry said the entire 508-km corridor is being developed with Shinkansen technology. Out of the total length, 465.38 km is being built on viaducts — a bridge with a series of spans that is supported by piers or towers.
On July 9, the first breakthrough was achieved in the 21-km tunnel which is being constructed between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Maharashtra, marking the successful completion of a 2.7-km section of the tunnel.
Five kilometres of the tunnel are being excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli, while the remaining 16-km will be excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
This tunnel stretch also includes a 7-km undersea section beneath Thane creek. Along with this, a total of 310-km of viaduct construction has also been completed.
'A total of 15 river bridges are completed and 4 are in the advanced stages of construction. Out of 12 stations, 5 are completed and 3 more are now reaching completion stage. The station at BKC is an engineering marvel, as it will be located 32.5 m below ground and the foundation is designed to support the construction of a 95 m high building above ground. Apart from this project, the future corridors are also under active consideration,' said the ministry in a statement.
The foundation stone for the project was laid in September 2017. The total estimated cost is Rs 1.08 lakh crore. The project will have a total of 12 stations, travel time 2 hours and 7 minutes (with limited stops) and operational speed of 320 kilometers per hour. It will pass through Gujarat (348 km), Dadra and Nagar Haveli (4 km) and Maharashtra (156 km).

Hyundai Motor warns of bigger hit from US tariffs after Q2 profit fall
Hyundai Motor posted a decline in second-quarter operating profit on Thursday as U.S. tariffs on vehicles and parts started to weigh on its bottom line and warned of a bigger impact in the current quarter. Hyundai's results illustrate the stakes for South Korean officials, who are under pressure to come up with a trade deal after Washington and Tokyo reached an agreement this week that will cut tariffs on its Japanese rivals. The South Korean automaker said it was sticking to its annual profit target for now, but it will update the plan after the August 1 deadline for reciprocal tariffs to take effect. Hyundai, which together with affiliate Kia is the world's third-biggest automaking group by sales, booked operating profit of 3.6 trillion won ($2.64 billion) for the April-to-June period, down 16 per cent from 4.28 trillion won in the same period a year earlier. The result is compared to a 3.5 trillion won LSEG SmartEstimate drawn from 22 analysts. The South Korean automaker said U.S. tariffs cost the company 828 billion won ($606.37 million) in the second quarter, and the impact will be larger in the July to September period. Hyundai expected U.S. tariff rates on Korean autos to "go down a little" from the current 25 per cent, but it is hard to predict how much it would drop, said Hyundai Motor Chief Finance Officer Lee Seung-jo. South Korean companies have been on tenterhooks after Washington reached a deal with Japan this week that lowers tariffs on auto imports to 15 per cent and spares Tokyo from punishing new levies on other goods. South Korea's finance ministry said on Thursday that talks due to be held on Friday between top Seoul and Washington officials over tariffs have been rescheduled because of a scheduling conflict for U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The automaker's shares fell 2 per cent after the earnings announcement. "It seems crucial for Hyundai Motor to reassure investors on whether it has effective tools to navigate ongoing tariff-related uncertainty, or how it plans to contribute to broader South Korea-U.S. trade discussions," said Shin Yoon-chul, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities. "Yet, as with its first-quarter results, the company remained silent - a stance that is likely to leave foreign investors uneasy about investing in Hyundai." Vehicle pricing The earnings offer the first look at how the Korean automaker, which has gained market share and sales in the U.S. in recent years, is taking the impact of the tariffs in a lucrative market. Hyundai Motor generates over 40 per cent of its revenue in the U.S. market. Together with Kia, Hyundai Motor imports about two-thirds of its vehicles sold in the United States. Hyundai Motor front-loaded shipments to cushion the blow from the tariffs, but its U.S. inventory is drying up, analysts said. Hyundai Motor increased U.S. retail sales in the second quarter, rising by 10 per cent from a year earlier, as the automaker kept prices unchanged and absorbed higher costs. Hyundai said it will flexibly adjust U.S. vehicle prices based on market conditions and competitors rather than U.S. tariffs. The automaker also seeks to pursue alternative sourcing of parts, while closely reviewing the expansion of local vehicle production for the longer term. GM, Stellantis, and Tesla this week reported financial hits from the tariffs as automakers grapple with rising import and manufacturing costs from U.S. levies on not only vehicle imports, but also automotive parts, as well as steel and aluminum. While U.S. tariffs pose risks to its operations, the weaker South Korean currency helped cushion some of the blow from the tariffs, Hyundai said. Hyundai Motor said its revenue rose 7 per cent from a year earlier to 48.3 trillion won, versus the analysts' consensus of 47 trillion won.

Decks cleared for recarpeting of bad roads in Panchkula
1 2 Panchkula: The long-delayed recarpeting of several road stretches in Panchkula is finally set to begin, following the resolution of issues related to the defect liability period (DLP). These roads, which were earlier under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation (MC), had been transferred to the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority (PMDA). Despite their poor condition, the recarpeting work could not be initiated earlier because the roads were still under the DLP, during which the original contractors were responsible for repairs. Initially, PMDA planned to start the recarpeting work, but civil society groups raised objections, insisting that the MC should ensure the contractors fulfilled their obligations under the DLP. As a result, the matter remained unresolved. However, with the DLP now officially over, PMDA has begun the tendering process to carry out the work. A PMDA official confirmed to TOI that the tendering process would be completed soon and that the recarpeting work would commence after the monsoon season. The roads identified for recarpeting include stretches between Sector 1/4, 3/4, 4/6 (Dolphin Chowk), 25/26, 17/18, 7/18, the underpass near Gurudwara Koohni Sahib to Mata Mansa Devi Temple, and the road from the Sector dumping ground to the new Ghaggar bridge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo In Panchkula, the PMDA is responsible for sector-dividing and external roads, while the inner roads of sectors remain under the MC's jurisdiction. According to PMDA data, out of 47.29 km of outer roads under its control, Rs 31.92 crore was sanctioned for the special repair of 32 roads covering 25.54 km. Work on 21.72 km has already been completed, and repairs on the remaining stretches are under way. Officials noted that the completed repairs have significantly improved traffic movement and safety. However, due to the DLP, work on several key stretches had been stalled until now.
