Yankees Linked to Eugenio Suarez in Blockbuster Trade

The New York Yankees are approaching July's trade deadline as one of MLB's best teams.
They have an offense led by Aaron Judge, a heavy American League MVP favorite who could just win the Triple Crown.
They have a strong top of the starting rotation, with Max Fried leading the way and Carlos Rodon having an unbelievable bounce back season.

And while the bullpen has been inconsistent, Luke Weaver is set to return sometime next month and Devin Williams has been much better as of late.
This year's Yankees team — even without Juan Soto (signed with the New York Mets) and Gerrit Cole (underwent Tommy John surgery) — may be even better than the 2024 version that went to the World Series.
However, there are a few clear holes that need to be addressed ahead of the trade deadline, and there may be no bigger one than third base.
While the Yankees have tried to address that problem by moving Jazz Chisholm to third base, that then leaves a hole at second base, where Chisholm is a more natural and superior defender anyway. Thus, the Yankees should look to add a third baseman at the deadline, and ESPN's Brad Doolittle has just the idea: Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 01: Pavin Smith #26, Corbin Carroll #7 and Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrate after Suárez drove them in with a grand slam in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on April 01, 2025 in the Bronx borough of New York City. Here's what Doolittle had to say while discussing what New York should do at the deadline.
"First, note the Yankees' title odds, which are the highest in this month's Stock Watch. New York has a higher baseline rating than Detroit, giving the Yankees a narrow edge in all those simulated AL Championship Series meetings with the Tigers despite the road disadvantage. Also, the postseason paths of New York and Detroit are less laden with superteams than their NL brethren, so -- voilà! -- the Yankees' title odds are looking good. To stay there: They need more pitching for sure, though the Yankees have done a great job of piecing things together so far. A more impactful pickup might come from a power bat for third base, with Arizona's Eugenio Suarez leaping to mind as an ideal fit."
Suarez, 33, is having another strong season at the plate, slashing .233/.305/.514 with 19 home runs, 52 RBIs and an OPS of .819. The one-time All-Star has had at least 30 home runs in three of the past four seasons, and set a career-high with 49 home runs back in 2019.

While Suarez is a below average defender, he more than makes up for it with his slugging. He would be a significant upgrade for the Yankees at third base, where they've received a total production of 0.0 fWAR. Suarez, on the other hand, has generated 1.2 fWAR by himself.
Finally, Suarez is on an expiring deal, as Arizona picked up his $15 million club option after playing out his seven-year, $66 million deal.
Thus, he shouldn't cost New York too much for half a season of production, and his bat could be the difference in a short postseason series. In eight career postseason games, Suarez has an OPS of .810.

Little Leaguer reveals awkward Shohei Ohtani run-in: ‘Never liked him ever since'
Not everybody admires Shohei Ohtani. A young girl playing for Australia's Little League World Series baseball team explained why she's not a fan of the two-way Dodgers superstar in an interview during the Mets-Mariners game on 'Sunday Night Baseball's' KidsCast. Monica Arcuri from Brisbane said she went to Anaheim to see the Angels play in 2023 and saw Ohtani hit a home run off Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi. Monica Arcuri (r.) during Australia's Little League World Series game against Canada on Aug. 17, 2025. AP 'He hit a home run into an area where the fans couldn't go, and then this guy got the ball and gave it to my brother,' Arcuri explained. 'So the next day we went to the VIP box at the front and I asked for his signature, but all he gave me was a side eye and not a nice glance. So after that, I've never liked him ever since. He's not really humble. Not my style.' Ohtani did hit a home run off Kikuchi in the third inning of an April 9, 2023, game at Angel Stadium, the ball landing near the rock formation in center field. Both Ohtani and Kikuchi attended Hanamaki Higashi High School in Japan, though not at the same time. Shohei Ohtani Denver Post via Getty Images 2023 was Ohtani's last season with the Angels before he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, though $680 million of that is deferred. Ohtani did not pitch last season due to elbow surgery, but helped lead the Dodgers to a World Series victory and won the NL MVP. The 31-year-old recently made headlines because he and his agent, Nez Balelo, were sued by a Hawaii real estate investor and broker for allegedly getting them fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Hapuna Coast.

Rockies were once in danger of breaking MLB mark for losses. Now, they're piling up wins
DENVER — This was a cool moment for Warming Bernabel — being doused with an icy bucket of water. Not that long ago, winning moments like this were few and far between for the Colorado Rockies. That winning feeling, though, has returned a little more often in the second half of the season. The Rockies rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 courtesy of Bernabel's walk-off single in the ninth inning. With that, the Rockies snapped a 10-game skid against the Dodgers. They also tied their season-high winning streak of four games. Even more, they're 14-15 since the All-Star break, while the NL West-leading Dodgers are 13-15. Colorado still trails the defending World Series champions by 35 games in the standings. No longer are the Rockies in imminent danger of setting a modern-era major league mark for losses, though. At 36-89, Colorado needs to win six of its final 37 games to steer clear of the dubious record set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished 41-121. 'We're at this stage right now where we're trying to get better as a team,' All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman said. 'We're trying to play the game the right way and do things to put us in a position in the future to get to the spot that some of these teams we're playing against are in.' Colorado has won five series since the All-Star break. That after winning just two series before the break. 'You definitely see flashes,' Goodman said. 'We're a super-young team. But getting that learning experience and figuring out how to win at this level and how to do it together as a team has been pretty cool to watch the last month or so.' The last time Colorado beat the Dodgers was Sept. 21. It's been a little longer since the Rockies last beat Los Angeles at Coors Field — June 19, 2024, to be precise. 'It's good to get a win. We're playing good baseball right now,' Goodman said. 'It's just going out and playing clean baseball and playing the way we've been playing.' The Dodgers entered the four-game series in the Mile High City fresh off a sweep of rival San Diego. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts insisted his team wouldn't overlook the Rockies. 'We're going to get their best. We're prepared for that,' Roberts said before the game. 'But yeah, absolutely, teams try to kind of use us as a marker. We see that.' In the ninth inning, the Dodgers were playing their outfielders deep to prevent a double. It ended up costing them one. Ezequiel Tovar started a one-out rally with a bloop double that a charging Teoscar Hernández couldn't haul in. 'It's a big outfield,' Hernández explained. 'I tried to make a play. I didn't.' Bernabel followed by sending a pitch from Justin Wrobleski (4-5) up the middle to bring home Tovar. 'There's no cooler way to win a game in baseball than a walk-off,' Goodman said. 'It's always fun when that happens.'
