St. Paul Saints tempt fans with "Plain Night" after John Oliver taunts: "It's going to be meh"
Oliver then pledged to treat one International League team to a "total rebrand," including a new name and mascot. The Saints were game, even though their home games are beloved for being rollicking, silly, pig-friendly fiestas. But the team's hopes were dashed when the winner was unveiled on Sunday's show: the Erie SeaWolves.
The Saints didn't get mad, though — they got promotional. The team says Thursday night's home game against the Norfolk Tides at St. Paul's CHS Field is dubbed "Plain Night," promising, "it's going to be meh."
The first 1,000 fans will receive a sheet of plain, white paper, and instead of the traditional peanut toss during the seventh inning stretch, white bread will be lobbed at attendees. But that's not all.
"If you're looking for some great dessert, look somewhere else because the concession stands will serve nothing but vanilla ice cream," the team wrote in its announcement on Monday.
But the cherry atop of the proverbial vanilla ice cream (and don't expect cherries or any other toppings at Thursday's game) is an incredible deal for anyone with "John" or "Oliver" in their names.
"The team will do something they have never done in 33 seasons, offer free tickets just because of what your parents decided to name you," the team wrote.
The Saints also note "John" and "Oliver" are "two of the Top 150 generic men's names in the world."
Fans will also be dazzled by a power point presentation of "all the names the Saints didn't choose in 1993," when the team was founded by Mike Veeck, Marvin Goldklang and Bill Murray. Yes, that Bill Murray.
And let it be known to those hoping to catch the lens of a camera operator for some jumbotron glory: only those dressed in khaki pants with their shirts tucked in have a chance to shine.
"Plain Night isn't about thrills — it's about embracing the underwhelming," the team wrote. "So, wear your beige, tuck in that polo, and prepare for a night that redefines 'just fine.' Baseball will be played. Possibly. Fun will be had. Arguably."

The new release is Swift's 12th album. It's no longer a cruel summer. Taylor Swift officially announced her new album The Life of a Showgirl on Aug. 12. And one day later, she shared more details about the upcoming work — including the cover art, track list and release date — as well as other surprises during her appearance on boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast, New Heights. Fans noticed Swift was up to something earlier in the day, when a cryptic countdown was posted on Swift's "Taylor Nation" Instagram Story. The countdown led to 7 p.m. — when the New Heights podcast episode was set to drop. The post showed a glowing orange door, the same one that appeared on stage behind Swift during the Eras tour, as well as a link to Swift's website, which featured the same image, with the door slowly descending. Over the course of four hours, on every hour, four squares with locks at the center appeared next to the door. First there was an orange lock, then pink, then blue and finally white. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that in the center of each lock, where a key would be placed, was the same shape as the stage layout at the Eras tour. When 7 p.m. arrived, Swift's website revealed the cover of The Life of a Showgirl, which featured Swift in a sparkling outfit, laying in a pool of green water. George Kittle, Brock Bowers and Trey McBride aren't just the top three on my board — they're in their own tier, a category reserved for players who project as the unquestioned No. 1 target earners of their offenses. People will debate which one should be ranked first, but the reality is they're all true TE1s. If you land any of them, you're drafting the focal point of an NFL passing game. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] McBride led all tight ends with a 29.3% target share and topped the position in expected fantasy points per game (19.2), turning that into 111 receptions, 1,146 yards and 15.6 fantasy points per game — second-best at the position. Bowers commanded a position-leading 153 targets, finishing first in receptions (112), yards (1,194) and yards after the catch (596), while matching McBride's fantasy output at 15.5 points per game. His ability to create downfield separation (2.09 yards) and post a 27.8% dominator rating as a rookie is absurd. Zach Ertz, Commanders – A 34-year-old veteran with little dynasty appeal but sneaky 2025 value. With Terry McLaurin's status in Washington up in the air, Ertz steps in as Jayden Daniels' likely security blanket. His ability to find soft spots in coverage makes him a high-floor streaming option who could easily outproduce ADP. 1 Fade at Cost Sam LaPorta, Lions – I love the talent, but he's coming off the board as TE4 in most drafts — three spots ahead of my ranking. We don't know what Detroit's offense will look like under new leadership, and paying elite capital for a player in a changing system is a bet I'm not willing to make right now. Final Word If you're going to spend up, spend for the ceiling. The safest path is securing one of the top three and walking away from the position until bye week. If you miss, attack the late rounds with upside swings — because the gap between TE12 and TE24 isn't as wide as most think.

West Virginia athletic department agrees to partnership with local mulch company
On the same day Kansas received a record-breaking $300 million donation, one of the Jayhawks' Big 12 counterparts secured a deal of its own. West Virginia has agreed to a multi-year partnership with Grant County Mulch that makes the company the official mulch supplier of the Mountaineers' athletic department, the university announced August 13. Based in Petersburg, West Virginia, about 90 miles southeast of West Virginia's Morgantown campus, Grant County Mulch is the largest bulk mulch supplier in the country, according to the Mountaineers' release.
