Awaiting good news: Dr Wee (left) helping Lim by highlighting his plight. — Photo courtesy of Dr Wee's Facebook
KUALA LUMPUR: The dream of a top STPM student to pursue engineering at a local university is set to become a reality after MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong highlighted his plight.
Yesterday, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir gave the assurance in Parliament that Lim Chin Hong, a high-achiever who lost his right leg due to a medical condition called hemangiona, will be considered for engineering programmes offered in public universities.
Lim, a student from SMK Yong Peng who achieved a 4.0 CGPA in STPM 2024, was earlier denied the choice for engineering programmes on account of his disability.
'I was informed by the Yang Berhormat (Dr Wee) about this student, who is recognised as an OKU.
'The university evaluation had rejected him, despite his results being full straight As.
'He deserves to go to university,' Zambry said in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, where he acknowledged while the rejection was based on reasons such as the institution lacking the necessary facilities, admitted that such grounds were unacceptable and pledged policy changes to make public universities more inclusive.
'We cannot allow excuses like 'we do not have the facilities'.
'We must change university policies to ensure greater inclusivity for OKU students.
'Therefore, I wish to inform Yang Berhormat that this student, who scored full As, will, God willing, be given a place,' he added.
Dr Wee, who is also the Ayer Hitam MP, highlighted Lim's plight after the science stream student discovered that all engineering courses were removed from his public university application due to his disability.
Dr Wee questioned the broader admissions policy, citing the case of another student known only as Aniq, an autistic candidate who scored a CGPA of 3.8, but was also unable to select preferred programmes.
He stressed that government policies must not be seen as discriminating against persons with disabilities and urged the Higher Education Ministry to review policies to ensure equal opportunities for those with disabilities.
Zambry had said last week that Aniq's case will be resolved soon.

Malaysia must build internal capabilities, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must build its own internal capabilities as it cannot continue to rely in foreign technology, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that this covers areas such as cloud computing, as it is necessary to protect the country's classified information and strategic assets. Anwar added that this, was discussed while he chaired the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) Meeting No. 2 of 2025 on Thursday (Aug 21) and emphasised the need for new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to be addressed through a security lens. "Therefore, the government will continue to strengthen the country's cyber defence by protecting critical infrastructure, increasing public awareness, and strengthening cooperation among government agencies, the private sector, and international partners. "In terms of legislation, the Cybercrime Bill will be tabled in Parliament at the end of this year," he said in a post uploaded on his Facebook page on Thursday night. Anwar said every individual also plays a role in protecting personal data when dealing online, including through the use of MyDigital ID, which now records an average of 25,000 users per day as a result of integration with applications such as MyJPJ, MySejahtera, MyBayar PDRM, and MyGOV. "Malaysia's commitment is also expressed at the global level. In the near future, we will sign the United Nations Convention on cybercrime in Hanoi, Vietnam, as proof of our determination to strengthen international cooperation against digital crime," he said. He said the meeting also emphasised the importance of developing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) technology together with the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), researchers, and the industry. The Prime Minister added that this effort will be able to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure, curb cybercrime, and ensure that national interests and the well-being of the people continue to be guaranteed. - Bernama

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said stated that this announcement highlights the ministry's crucial role in strengthening the country's legal ecosystem.
