Caitlin Clark's New Teammate Reveals What Everyone Thinks About Indiana Fever

Yahoo04-05-2025

Caitlin Clark's new teammate Sophie Cunningham got a new version of the Indiana Fever experience in her first preseason game, and it left a strong impression.
In the second quarter of Indiana's preseason game against the Washington Mystics, Cunningham had a heated exchange with Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen that left them both on the hardwood. The chaos continued later in the quarter, when Washington guard Brittney Sykes gave her a shove in the back.

The Fever acquired Cunningham, a career 7.7 point-per-game scorer, from the Phoenix Mercury in a three-team trade during the offseason.
When she arrived in Indiana, Cunningham recalled her experience in Phoenix last season, watching from afar and seeing the amount of pressure on Clark and the Fever.

Just one preseason game into her Indiana career, Cunningham already had a new perspective on what that pressure felt like from the inside.
"[Fever forward DeWanna Bonner] had my back and that's what it's all about," Cunningham said of the incident involving Sykes against the Mystics.
"We have a huge target on our backs," she stated. "I don't think that's a secret.'
As an organization, the Fever have embraced being the center of attention heading into the 2025 WNBA season. They rolled out an ad campaign for Clark's sophomore season titled "Now You Know," that is plastered on billboards around Indianapolis.

"Our road games sound like home games and out fan base doesn't ask for permission to show up and dominate," the team said, acknowledging its role as the main attraction in any arena — including Sunday's sold-out preseason game at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Clark played in college.
As one of seven experienced WNBA players to join the Fever in the offseason, Cunningham represents the movement to build a fearsome team around Clark that has high expectations to compete for a championship in 2025.
"I think that our team right now is turning heads," she told the Indy Star. "DeWanna Bonner, getting her was huge. She was one of my vets when I was a rookie coming in. And she's no one to mess with. You have Natasha Howard, you have Aliyah Boston, you have Kelsey Mitchell. We just have a squad, and our depth is amazing. I'm just excited."

"To be honest, when you have a group that can let go of the egos and come here to win and work hard, I think that's the best type of group," she added. "When you're all willing to do the dirty work, that's what I'm most excited about. That's my bread and butter right there, to outwork your opponents, and have fun doing it."

Chicago Sky Coach's Angel Reese Comments Surface Before Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky currently hold a 2-4 record after the first month of the 2025 WNBA season. New head coach Tyler Marsh and the Sky started off on a four-game losing streak but rebounded with back-to-back wins against the 1-6 Dallas Wings. Advertisement Second-year post players Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, both of whom were first-round picks during the 2024 WNBA Draft, have put together solid campaigns once again. Cardoso is averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest, while Reese is contributing 10.0 points and a league-leading 12.3 rebounds per game. Both landed on the 2024 WNBA All-Rookie team last season, and they have grown even more in their second year. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Part of this growth can be attributed to assistant coach Courtney Paris, an 11-year WNBA veteran who was hired as an assistant coach under Tyler Marsh this season. She won the 2018 WNBA championship with the Seattle Storm and led the league in total rebounds on two occasions. Advertisement Paris spoke with Sky reporter Karli Bell ahead of the team's rematch against the Indiana Fever on Saturday. She spoke about 2024 WNBA All-Star forward Angel Reese and what has impressed her most. 'She has another level. When it's time to play, she competes at a level, and you can teach anything you want to teach in sports, but that competitive edge that you bring every day is either you have it or you don't,' Paris said. 'She just has it to the top level, even with all the pressure she has on her. That's what most impressed me about her and what continues to impress me about her.' Reese averaged 13.6 points and a WNBA-record 13.1 rebounds per game as a rookie, which landed her a spot on both the All-Star and All-Rookie teams. She is averaging a double-double once again this season and has four games of 12 or more rebounds. On Saturday, the Sky will host the Indiana Fever at the United Center in Chicago for their first game of the Commissioner's Cup. They will also be looking to avenge the 93 to 58 defeat that they suffered on opening day of the 2025 season. The game will tipoff at 8:00 p.m. EST. Aaron Rodgers signing is ‘worst-case scenario' for Steelers: Ryan Clark

One former Steelers star is not too thrilled about Pittsburgh landing Aaron Rodgers. Ryan Clark thinks that the Steelers are making a mistake in signing Rodgers, saying that fans should look it as a 'worst-case scenario.' 'This is the worst-case scenario for Pittsburgh Steelers fans. It continues to keep you mired in mediocrity,' Clark said Thursday during an appearance on ESPN's 'SportsCenter.' 'Will this team be better? Have they gotten better in the quarterback room? Absolutely. Will they contend for that championship that Pittsburgh Steelers people, and fans, and organization think is the standard? Advertisement 'No, they won't. … They'll be fighting for a wild card spot. They'll probably be home week one of the playoffs and again be looking for a franchise quarterback. If you told me you were gonna pair one of this era's greatest coaches with one of this era's greatest quarterbacks, I'd expect greatness. That is not what we'll get.' 3 Ryan Clark at the 2025 Disney Upfront. WireImage Rodgers, 41, agreed to a one-year deal with the Steelers pending a physical, the team announced Thursday night. Clark, who spent eight years of his NFL career in Pittsburgh, has criticized his former team going after Rodgers in free agency multiple times, saying in April that he was disappointed in how the Steelers were handling the situation. 3 Aaron Rodgers in a New York Jets uniform. AP 'It makes me sick, to be honest,' Clark said during an appearance on ESPN's 'Get Up.' 'I feel like this has been mishandled already.' Clark also said he believes the Steelers were being 'held hostage' by the 10-time Pro Bowler who has 'actually never done anything for you.' 3 Aaron Rodgers, wearing a New York Jets uniform, walks off the field. Clark said.' Advertisement 'It's been a bad play by the Pittsburgh Steelers already,' Clark added. Rodgers, after playing one full season with the Jets after an Achilles injury in 2023, will now hope for better fortunes in Pittsburgh.
