Disneyland's 70th Anniversary Is Celebrating an Icon You Might Never Have Heard Of

Gizmodo15-05-2025

International Disney Parks sensation Duffy has made a comeback at Disneyland for the theme park's 70th anniversary celebration. The bear took off at Tokyo Disney before expanding to the rest of the overseas parks, making it a must-have collectible alongside his friends.
Reservations for the shop at Tokyo DisneySea, where the latest versions of the adorable stuffed animals are available, quickly sell out. I recently asked my friend who lives in Japan to pick up one of the new characters, LinaBell, for my kid—and found out the hard way just how much of a hot item it is.
However, Duffy and his friend ShellieMay are making a special debut during the Celebrate Happy Calvacade at the Disneyland Resort, where they'll be kicking off the Disney character mini-parade. io9 was there for their first appearance since Duffy's brief meet and greet stint at Disney California Adventure back in 2010—years before his stateside popularity picked up after he became a viral success online.
Now celebrating 20 years as a character, he's back with ShellieMay to take part in Disneyland's anniversary. However, the parade will be the only capacity the characters will appear; Disney confirmed to io9 that they will not be participating in meet and greet opportunities, which is a bummer! Duffy has previously made brief appearances as Santa Duffy at Walt Disney World's Jollywood Nights.
Duffy's lore is based around the idea that he's a stuffed teddy bear that Minnie Mouse gifted Mickey to take with him on his travels. ShellieMay was the bear Minnie made in kind to give Duffy a companion. Yes, kinda like the Bride of Frankenstein, but make it cutesy and magical. But what's unique is that there's a whole universe of adventures for Duffy and his friends. The bear has his own storylines with ShellieMay and the rest of the gang, which includes Gelatoni the painter cat, TippiBlue the messenger seagull, CookieAnn the baker dog, OluMel the beach life turtle, StellaLou the dancing rabbit, and most recently LinaBell the fox detective.
They're sentient in a Toy Story way, it seems, with the magical bear and Mickey knowing that the other is in fact aware of its existence. Duffy goes off on his own journeys often and draws on the help of his friends along the way to make it home to Mickey.
Disney fans who visit the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan or the parks in China often bring back Duffy or one of his pals as a special souvenir. Some icons are exclusive to certain parks. When Disney's Hawaii resort Aulani debuted OluMel, it was a notable moment for the character, since Duffy has only mostly been available outside of the U.S.
Naturally, that's only made Duffy and friends more highly prized by collectors, especially stateside. Olu the turtle has been known to make gift shop appearances in at Walt Disney World's Polynesian Village Resort. I got lucky when a loved one managed to surprise me with CookieAnn from Mickey's of Glendale, Disney's Imagineering campus store, shortly after she debuted. And some fast-acting fans were able to nab Duffy items sold at the D23 Expo in 2022.
Duffy merchandise will appear at the Storyland Boutique at the Downtown Disney District for Disneyland's 70th. As of publication the second Duffy and friends drop has yet to hit shelves. The first drop, probably to test the waters stateside, sold out for the most part with only a few items left in store when we checked. I'm determined to get my daughter a LinaBell and hope she makes an appearance on this coast soon.
Disneyland's 70th Celebrations kick off Friday.

Everything You Need to Know About Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games

Gamers rejoice! The long-awaited follow-up to the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2, is here. Nintendo released the new console on June 5, alongside Mario Kart World, the next installment in the popular racing franchise, alongside the new console. The Switch 2 is backwards compatible, so you'll be able to play your Switch games — albeit with some compatibility issues — and Nintendo is providing free upgrades to some other original Switch games to improve playability on the latest console. Nintendo is also releasing a handful of upgraded Nintendo Switch games that can be played on the new console, called Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. Here are all the games Nintendo said will get Switch 2 Editions: Now Playing: Switch 2 Launch Games | Obvious Skill Issue 5 05:56 While those games are set to be upgraded for the new console, only Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom and Civilization 7 are available now. Switch 2 Editions of the other games will be available later this year. Nintendo wrote online that the Switch 2 Edition of a game can include visual improvements, new features or additional game modes compared with their original Switch counterparts. For instance, the Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition offers faster load times, an additional save slot for you or another person, as well as higher definition and smoother visuals. The Switch 2 versions of games are available in both digital and physical copies. You can buy and preorder the Switch 2 Editions of some games at retailers like Target and Walmart. The Switch 2 Editions will cost up to $80. If you already own the Switch version of one of those games, you can buy an upgrade pack to play the Switch 2 Edition in the My Nintendo Store or the Nintendo eShop on your console. You can also purchase digital codes for upgrade packs at retailers, which you can then redeem on your console. In an interview with IGN, Nintendo America's vice president of product and player experience Bill Trinen said some upgrade packs will cost $10. "For somebody who has bought Tears of the Kingdom or Breath of the Wild, the upgrade packs for those are $9.99," Trinen told IGN. "If you happen to be a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member, both of the Zelda upgrade packs are inclusive within that membership." For more on the Nintendo Switch 2, here's what we know about the console and Switch 2 Editions of games. You can also check out what to know about games like Mario Kart World and The Duskbloods.

PSA: Don't fall for Nintendo Switch 2 horror story hoaxes this weekend

The Nintendo Switch 2 is out today and that's a cause for celebration. Players who were able to score one will no doubt spend the day racing in Mario Kart World, testing out their Joy-con's new tricks in Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and testing out new features like GameChat. There's bound to be a lot of excitement, but also plenty of complaints. You're bound to see players sharing their issues with the system this weekend, which may leave you wondering if it's worth waiting to buy one until the bugs are ironed out. That would be a totally healthy response, but be warned: The fakers are coming. Take everything you see and hear this weekend with some healthy skepticism until the dust clears. Recommended Videos Every time a video game console launches, the internet fills up with hardware horror stories. Tales of bricked systems, broken parts, and more will no doubt dominate social media in the days following a console launch. Those might even be accompanied by a convincing video that shows a console looking like it's about to explode. Often times, these videos are complete fabrications built to sow chaos. Who can forget the videos of the Nintendo Switch blaring out loud sounds as static overtook the display? Better yet, who remembers the image of a burning Xbox Series X, with thick smoke billowing from its top vents? The latter was quickly debunked as users figured out that the bad actor behind it achieved that effect by sticking a vape pen in the console. You are bound to see some similar videos olf the Nintendo Switch 2 going around in the next few days that look to prey on the gullible. Don't fall for it. Why would someone do that? Because we live in an attention economy. Social media incentivizes users to post sensationalized content that will rack up engagement. It has always been a problem on the internet, but it could be much worse this console cycle. X, for instance, now actively encourages engagement bait posts through its blue checkmark monetization scheme. The person who makes the most terrifying Switch 2 disaster video could stand to make money doing it. This is also the first video game console launching in our current AI dystopia, where it's easier than ever to create a fake video and fool anyone who doesn't look over it with a close eye. That problem could also be magnified by faulty tools like Google's AI Overview, which has a history of presenting false information from websites like Reddit and YouTube as fact. If you Google 'How much are Nintendo Switch 2 games?' you'll likely be greeted by an AI Overview claiming that physical games cost $90, repeating an incorrect claim popularized on Reddit that has since been debunked. If YouTube fills up with engagement bait videos lying about broken Switch 2 features, there's a good chance that Google will parrot indefinitely. All of this is to say two things. One, we are currently living in a misinformation nightmare that is being made worse every day by big tech companies who embolden bad actors. Two, be wary of any Switch 2 horror stories you hear over the next few days. If we find any legitimate bugs with the Switch 2, a real human being who has rigorously vetted the information will let you know on this website. Don't let the grifters make a sucker out of you.
