Liver health is vital as it is responsible for key body functions like filtering toxins, storing nutrients, and supporting digestion. It is one of the most important organs, making it very important to adopt healthy diet and lifestyle habits for safeguarding it. So, one needs to be cautious regarding liver damage. HT Lifestyle talked to experts to understand the main causes of liver damage and what one can do to prevent them. 3 causes of liver damage

Liver damage can originate from a variety of causes, and understanding them is key to prevention. If you know the causes, you will be able to seek timely medical help. Dr Pavan Dhoble, consultant, gastroenterology, PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mahim, shared three crucial contributors to liver damage:
1. Alcohol
Alcohol can harm the liver in two ways.
The short-term injury caused by alcohol is due to intoxication of alcohol, which is called acute alcoholic hepatitis.
Long-term alcohol use can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, which has multiple stages depending on the intake of alcohol. This damage is worsened if there's underlying fatty liver disease.
2. Food
Overeating, especially high-calorie junk food and sugary drinks, can lead to obesity, which in turn causes Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
It is also called metabolic liver disease.
NAFLD is typically a lifestyle-driven condition and if left unchecked can also lead progress to cirrhosis of the liver.
3. Viral
Short-term liver inflammation is often caused by hepatotropic viruses, mainly Hepatitis A and E.
These are food and waterborne viruses typically linked to contaminated water or food and poor sanitation.
In contrast, Hepatitis B and C viruses cause chronic or long-term damage and are transmitted through infected blood and syringes or from mother to child.

When it comes to liver health, early action and preventive care can make all the difference.
Dr Dinesh Zirpe, director - liver transplantation and HPB surgeon, Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune, shared some practical measures that help to prevent liver damage and maintain overall liver health.
Highlighting all the risk factors, he said, 'Preventing liver damage can be achieved by reducing alcohol intake. For those who are at risk, vaccines for hepatitis A and B are available and strongly advised. Currently, there are medications available that make hepatitis C curable. For those with risk factors such as being overweight, diabetes, or a previous history of alcohol consumption, it is essential to attend regular check-ups so that any potential liver damage is detected and treated promptly.'
Further, Dr Dinesh Zirpe also reiterated the heightened risk from fatty liver. If this is combined with unhealthy eating habits, alcohol consumption, or viral infections, the damage can progress much faster.

Additionally, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugary beverages can promote insulin resistance and weight gain, thereby contributing to fatty liver disease. Lifestyle Regular exercise can help you maintain your physical well-being and significantly reduce the risk of developing chronic health conditions. Physical inactivity not only contributes to weight gain but also increases the likelihood of developing fatty liver disease. Your diet and lifestyle choices are also linked with other factors which can further trigger the risk of developing fatty liver. Some of these include: 1. Obesity Fatty liver in non-drinkers is more common in individuals who are overweight or obese. Excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen, can lead to increased liver fat deposition. 2. Metabolic conditions Conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension are associated with an increased risk of fatty liver. Poor diet and inactivity can exacerbate these conditions, creating a cycle that further elevates the risk for fatty liver. Other factors that can increase fatty liver disease risk Smoking Insulin resistance Genetics PCOS Obstructive sleep apnea Thyroid issues Hormonal imbalance High deposition of fat in the liver prevents it from working as effectively. However, timely treatment and lifestyle changes can prevent it from getting worse. If you are overweight, gradual weight loss with a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent irreversible damage. A nutrient-dense, whole-food-based diet is generally recommended for people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The Directorate of Health Services (DHS), Manipur, has officially announced the merit list for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025. This list includes candidates who have applied for seats under the state government, Non-Resident Indian (NRI), and management quotas across various courses including Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP), and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT). As per the list, Janakkumar Tekcham has achieved an AIR of 7864 with a NEET score of 561 under the government quota for MBBS and BDS courses. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ravi Malik, paediatrics, MAMC and founder and medical director, Malik Radix Healthcare said, 'Your child may appear active and healthy, but nutrient gaps can quietly affect their growth, immunity, and focus. (Unsplash) Dr Ravi Malik further shared the subtle signs of malnourishment in children that parents should watch out for: 1. Low energy and fatigue after play If your child is often tired after playtime, wants naps frequently, or struggles to concentrate, it may signal deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, or protein. These nutrients are essential for maintaining energy and supporting brain function. Watch out for increased sleepiness, lack of focus, or sluggish behavior. 2. Hair loss or brittle strands Noticeable thinning or frequent hair breakage may point to low protein, biotin, or zinc levels. In more severe cases, you might see patches of hair loss (alopecia). Hair health is a reliable marker for nutritional status, especially protein intake. Design a nutritious diet for your child.(Unsplash) 3. Falling sick too often While 6–8 episodes of fever per year are considered normal, frequent colds, slow recovery, or recurring infections can indicate a weak immune system. This could be due to deficiencies in vitamins C, D, zinc, or protein. Watch for patterns of illness, especially gastrointestinal infections or chest infections. Delayed growth or dental issues If your child is not gaining weight or height as expected or has delayed or chipped teeth, they may be lacking protein, calcium, or vitamin D. Roughly, a 1-year-old should weigh around 10 kg, a 6-year-old around 20 kg, and a 10-year-old around 30 kg. Similarly, expected heights are 75 cm at 1 year, 100 cm at 4 years, and 137 cm at 10 years. 5. Mood swings and poor focus Frequent irritability, anxiety, or poor school performance may be linked to low levels of omega-3, iron, or B-complex vitamins. These nutrients play a key role in cognitive and emotional development. What can parents do? 'Focus on colourful, balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, nuts, and seeds. Eggs are an excellent protein source. Encourage outdoor play for natural vitamin D. Avoid over-reliance on packaged health drinks. And most importantly, consider supplements only after consulting a pediatrician,' the doctor suggested.
