QRCS launches phase 2 of 'Road to Stability' initiative in Lebanon

Qatar Tribune14-05-2025
BEIRUT: With funding from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs have launched phase 2 of the 'Road to Stability', an initiative aimed at supporting the poorest Lebanese families affected by the recent war on Lebanon.
The overall purpose of the project is to enhance the financial stability of the most vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian families in Lebanon.
Earlier, phase 1 had been completed for the benefit of Syrian refugee families in Lebanon, in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
This newly launched phase, which focuses on the affected Lebanese families, is funded by QFFD and implemented in partnership with Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs.
Based on regular assessments and surveys conducted by the ministry to identify the most affected people, 3,325 Lebanese families were selected to receive monthly cash aid for three months.
It is another episode of the constructive collaboration between QRCS and Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs as part of the country's social safety net programs, designed to empower the families most in need and enhance their resilience.
During the ceremony, the participants expressed their hope that this cooperation would serve as an effective model for unified humanitarian efforts, thanks to the generous support from QFFD and close coordination among Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs, QRCS, and other humanitarian partners in Lebanon.
In his keynote speech on behalf of QFFD, Qatar's Ambassador to Lebanon HE Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said, "This project comes at a time when Lebanon is experiencing critical circumstances, which entails lending a hand for the country to come through the recent crises and wars. The project's name indicates the importance of stability sought by all the Lebanese people, as well as Qatar's keenness to preserve it with unlimited support, for Lebanon to further pursue progress and recovery."
Lebanon's Minister of Social Affairs HE Hanin Al Sayed, stated, "I would like to express my deep appreciation to QRCS, which has always been committed to professional and dignity-respecting humanitarianism. We owe a debt of gratitude to QFFD and the government and people of Qatar for this significant contribution, which is a testimony to the humanitarian, social, economic, and developmental ties between our two nations."
Assistant Secretary-General for Communication and Fundraising at QRCS, Mohamed Ahmed Al Beshri, commented, "This project is not just a technical intervention or financial support. It is a true manifestation of our humanitarian and fraternal responsibility towards the families who suffer from harsh living conditions. Human dignity is indivisible. Standing up for the most vulnerable people is a moral duty underlying our institutional endeavors. We at QRCS believe that sustainable partnerships built on mutual trust are the solid foundation for any successful humanitarian intervention. We are proud of our strong partnership with Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs and highly value the substantial and continuous contributions by QFFD, our strategic and permanent partner in the humanitarian journey."

Jordan to host meeting with Syria and US on Syrian reconstruction

Jordan will host a Jordanian-Syrian-American meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to support the rebuilding of Syria, its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates says, as Damascus seeks investment deals with international companies to revive its war-ravaged economy. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and United States envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack are expected to attend, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa's fledgling government has been grappling with the fallout from sectarian violence between Bedouin and Druze fighters in the southern province of Suwayda as well as Israeli strikes on Syrian soldiers and the capital, Damascus. Syria's economy remains in tatters after nearly 14 years of war and the ouster of longtime President Bashar al-Assad in December. Jordan made its announcement after Damascus signed 12 agreements worth $14bn on Wednesday, including a $4bn agreement with Qatar's UCC Holding to build a new airport and a $2bn deal to establish a subway in Damascus with the national investment corporation of the United Arab Emirates. The projects 'will extend across Syria and represent a qualitative shift in infrastructure and economic life', Talal al-Hilali, head of the Syrian Investment Authority, said during a ceremony at the presidential palace in Damascus. He described the agreements as 'a turning point' for Syria's future. Al-Sharaa and Barrack were both present at the signing ceremony, according to Syria's official SANA news agency. The United Nations has put Syria's post-war reconstruction costs at more than $400bn. Syria's new authorities have worked to attract investment for the reconstruction of infrastructure across the country after the US and the European Union lifted sanctions on Syria in the wake of al-Assad's ouster. Other major developments on the investment front include the $2bn Damascus Towers project for residential high rises, signed with the Italian-based company UBAKO; a $500m deal for the Baramkeh Towers project, also in Damascus; and another $60m agreement for Baramkeh Mall. Last month, Saudi Arabia said it would invest about $3bn in real estate and infrastructure projects in Syria. In May, Damascus signed a $7bn energy deal with a consortium of Qatari, Turkish and US companies as it seeks to revive its crippled power sector. (Agencies)

At least six Lebanese soldiers killed in explosion at arms depot: Military

CairocTypeface:> At least six Lebanese soldiers were killed in an explosion while dismantling munitions at an arms depot, the Lebanese military said on Saturday. Other personnel were injured in the blast, which occurred as an army unit was inspecting and dismantling the depot's contents in the southern city of Tyre, the military added in an online statement. The Lebanese state news agency NNA reported the explosion happened while an army engineering team was dismantling munitions left over from Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon. Cross-border fighting has flared between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah movement since the eruption of the Gaza war in October 2023, with the Iran-backed militia attacking Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians. Arab League welcomes Lebanon's decision on limiting arms possession to state

CAIRO: The Arab League has welcomed the Lebanese government's adoption of a practical plan to implement the decision to restrict the possession of arms to the state, considering it a means to achieve stability in the country. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a statement that the issue of the exclusivity of arms to the state is a fundamental principle of sovereignty that cannot be ignored or violated under any pretext. He emphasized that the Lebanese government's decision to allow the army a period of time to implement this decision on the ground should receive the cooperation and support of all Lebanese and those who are committed to the country's sovereignty and independent decision-making. He also stressed the need for influential forces in the international community to pressure Israel to withdraw its occupation of Lebanese territory and cease bombing targets inside Lebanon. He noted that the precise and comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached last November is the only way to restore peace throughout Lebanon.
