The budgets of Indian films are steadily rising, now rivalling those of major Hollywood productions. In fact, it's become quite common for Indian movies to cross the ₹ 100 crore mark. Taking this trend to new heights, one film has emerged as the most expensive ever made in Indian cinema, with a whopping budget of ₹ 835 crore, surpassing even big-ticket films like Kalki 2898 AD, Brahmastra, and Adipurush.
The most expensive film in India is Nitesh Tiwari's magnum opus Ramayana Part 1.
Ramayana is a two-part epic mythological film. It stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. Sunny Deol will be seen as Hanuman.
Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Arun Govil are also a part of the film's ensemble cast. Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan are also a part of the film.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama last year, Ramayana is being built on a budget of $100 million (around ₹ 835 crore). The film is still under production.
With its over ₹ 800 crore budget, it has outpaced the production costs of big-budget films, including Kalki 2898 AD ( ₹ 600 crore), RRR and Adipurush ( ₹ 550 crore each). Brahmastra Part One which previously held the record as Bollywood's most expensive film at ₹ 375 crore, stands nowhere close to Ramayana's budget.
Ramayana Part 1 is backed by Namit Malhotra, owner of the global media giant Prime Focus. He is also the CEO of DNEG, the acclaimed British-Indian VFX powerhouse known for its cutting-edge visual effects, which has of eight Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects.
Ramayana's VFX work is helmed by DNEG.
Besides this, Ramayana also marks the first collaboration between AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer. Hans, the two-time Oscar award winner for Best Original Score, is best known for films like The Lion King (1994), Dune (2021) and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014).
On Thursday, the first look of Ramayana was unveiled by the makers.
The film is scheduled to be released on Diwali 2026. It will be followed by part 2.

Iuliia Aslamova shares her list of totally normal things she does while living in India.(Screengrab Instagram/@yulia_bangalore) 'Here's my list of absolutely normal things for yours #russianindian,' the caption of the reel reads. In the caption of her reel, she explains how she lives with her in-laws and enjoys it, saying it's a blessing since she doesn't have to manage the house herself. She also talks about eating with her hands, something she now does often and even claims makes food taste better. She goes on to say she's become comfortable with the Indian concept of being a little late. A 15- 20 minute delay doesn't bother her, and she simply plans around it. Having several house helpers, which felt unusual at first, now seems like a smart and convenient part of her daily life. Check out the viral video here: Iuliia mentions picking up bits of Hinglish and promises to learn Hindi properly in a year or two. She also highlights the Indian habit of negotiating as a surprising but useful skill she has gained here, calling it a 'superpower.' In the final few points, she talks about enjoying masala chai and how everything in India, from films to daily conversations, seems to be about love. Here's how people reacted to this video: The video mostly got positive reactions, with many praising Iuliia's warm and relatable take on Indian life. A few viewers, however, felt she oversimplified certain issues. One of the users, @sonalseth1, commented, 'Sorry to say but this. Is because you are not of Indian origin, so you are treated a little differently by your in-laws…' Another user, @kaviya_gowthaman, commented, 'Love your points. While many complain about the in-laws, there are some gems of MILs who understand and don't pass the generational trauma.' The reel not only offered a light-hearted look at cross-cultural habits but also sparked a friendly debate online about what's considered 'normal' or 'cringe.'

A Mumbai court on Friday issued a show cause notice to the city police for not submitting an inquiry report in a criminal complaint filed against film and television producer Ekta Kapoor for allegedly disrespecting Indian soldiers in one of her web series. The show cause notice was issued as the police haven't submitted the report yet. The complaint was filed by YouTuber Vikas Pathak, also known as 'Hindustani bhau'. It's not a miracle or that Gukesh just kept benefitting from Magnus' terrible mistakes. It was a game that was a big fight. And Magnus lost.'Gukesh himself played down Kasparov's comments but said that the high praise did feel nice."That's very nice to hear but I prefer not to think in those terms.
