India's most expensive film made at ₹835 cr, VFX & music by Oscar winners; not Kalki 2898 AD, Brahmastra, Adipurush
The most expensive film in India is Nitesh Tiwari's magnum opus Ramayana Part 1.
Ramayana is a two-part epic mythological film. It stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. Sunny Deol will be seen as Hanuman.
Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Arun Govil are also a part of the film's ensemble cast. Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan are also a part of the film.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama last year, Ramayana is being built on a budget of $100 million (around ₹ 835 crore). The film is still under production.
With its over ₹ 800 crore budget, it has outpaced the production costs of big-budget films, including Kalki 2898 AD ( ₹ 600 crore), RRR and Adipurush ( ₹ 550 crore each). Brahmastra Part One which previously held the record as Bollywood's most expensive film at ₹ 375 crore, stands nowhere close to Ramayana's budget.
Ramayana Part 1 is backed by Namit Malhotra, owner of the global media giant Prime Focus. He is also the CEO of DNEG, the acclaimed British-Indian VFX powerhouse known for its cutting-edge visual effects, which has of eight Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects.
Ramayana's VFX work is helmed by DNEG.
Besides this, Ramayana also marks the first collaboration between AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer. Hans, the two-time Oscar award winner for Best Original Score, is best known for films like The Lion King (1994), Dune (2021) and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014).
On Thursday, the first look of Ramayana was unveiled by the makers.
The film is scheduled to be released on Diwali 2026. It will be followed by part 2.

Mumbai Police get notice from court for non-submission of probe report on complaint against Ekta Kapoor
A Mumbai court on Friday issued a show cause notice to the city police for not submitting an inquiry report in a criminal complaint filed against film and television producer Ekta Kapoor for allegedly disrespecting Indian soldiers in one of her web series. The probe report was to be submitted by May 9, a deadline missed by the police. As per the complaint, a web series on Alt Balaji showed a military officer engaging in an "illicit sexual act".(AFP) The magistrate's court in Bandra had in February directed the Khar police to conduct an inquiry into the complaint against Ekta and others under section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Under this section, a magistrate can carry out an inquiry into a criminal complaint, or direct the police to do so. The magistrate's court had called for a report from the police by May 9. The show cause notice was issued as the police haven't submitted the report yet. The complaint was filed by YouTuber Vikas Pathak, also known as 'Hindustani bhau'. Besides Ekta, Vikas named her OTT platform Alt Balaji, and her parents--Shobha and Jeetendra, in the complaint. As per the complaint filed through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, a web series on Alt Balaji showed a military officer engaging in an "illicit sexual act" in one of its episodes. Vikas came across the episode in May 2020, the complaint said. "The accused have stooped to a cheap low and shamelessly targeted the dignity and pride of our country by depicting Indian Army military uniform in the illicit sexual act with national emblem on it," the complaint said.

Speaking after his final rapid match in the tournament, which essentially sealed his rapid title at the event, Gukesh said that one of his cousins was confident that he would win over Magnus, and wanted a shoutout in case it beat Magnus on July 3 at the event but forgot to mention this incident in the post-match interview. Gukesh revealed that his cousin was quite upset at the development and wanted a shoutout because a deal was a deal."It is a bit funny. Before I came into this tournament, one of my cousins told me that I was going to beat Magnus. So we made a deal that if I do beat Magnus, I will give him a shoutout in my interview. I completely forgot yesterday, and he was quite upset about that," Gukesh laughed.
