‘Considering it': Donald Trump on ‘federal takeover' of Washington DC

President Donald Trump on Wednesday mused again about the possibility of taking federal control of the US capital Washington, including by using soldiers, to counter what he falsely suggested was rising crime in the city. US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025.(Bloomberg) Under a more-than 50-year agreement, governance of Washington rests with the locally elected government of the District of Columbia -- including its mayor -- with Congress having an oversight role. Trump has long chafed at that arrangement and has repeatedly suggested he would like to federalize the city, giving the White House the final say in how it is run. "We're considering it, yeah, because the crime is ridiculous," he told reporters in response to a question about whether he should be in charge of the city's police force. "We want to have a great safe capital -- and we're going to have it. "The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else; we're not going to let it -- and that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly too," he said. The comments come a day after the billionaire president took to his social media platform to threaten city leaders. "If DC doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run," he wrote. Violent crime in Democratic-controlled Washington fell in the first half of 2025 by 26 percent compared with a year earlier, police statistics show. The city's crime rates in 2024 were already their lowest in three decades, according to figures produced by the Justice Department before Trump took office. Trump's threat to send the National Guard into the capital comes weeks after he deployed California's military reserve force into Los Angeles to quell protests over immigration raids, despite objections from local leaders and law enforcement. The president has frequently mused about using the military to control America's cities, many of which are under Democratic control and hostile to his nationalist impulses. On Wednesday Washington's non-voting congressional delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, rejected Trump's claim that violent crime was rising, and his threat to federalize the capital. "Presidents have no authority to unilaterally take control of DC. Congress would have to pass a law, and I won't let the current effort get that far," she said on X.

Turning to ‘spiritual powers' to fight ‘vote jihad' led to Mahayuti's victory: CM Fadnavis

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said he and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde turned to the 'spiritual powers' in the state to counter the 'vote jihad' experiment observed during last year's Lok Sabha election in May which led to their unprecedented victory in the assembly poll later in Nov. "An experiment was conducted in the name of 'vote jihad' during the Lok Sabha poll. Some people united to defeat nationalist thoughts. When we unearthed their conspiracy, I and Shinde Saheb, appealed to the spiritual powers in Maharashtra," he said. Fadnavis was speaking at an event organised by spiritual leader Ramgiri Maharaj at Shani Devgaon village in Vaijapur taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP's Mahayuti alliance suffered a setback in Maharashtra during the Lok Sabha election but made a remarkable comeback six months later in the assembly poll. "We told Ramgiri Maharaj and other seers in Maharashtra that this (vote jihad) is not a political invasion but a clear attack on our culture. There is a feeling that a handful of people are uniting to defeat the thoughts of nationalism and our sants," Fadnavis said. The CM said Maharashtra would have witnessed attacks on temples and its culture, as in the past, had the vote jihad experiment succeeded. "Ramgiri Maharaj and the others told people that they have bury caste differences to save our culture," the CM said, adding that their power was seen in Mahayuti's 'unprecedented' victory. BJP won 132 seats, Shiv Sena 57 and NCP 41 during the 2024 assembly election in the 288-member legislative assembly. In his speech, the CM said but he met the seer to express gratitude. Fadnavis also announced govt's support for a Rs 109-crore development plan of 'Sarala Bet', a shrine under the aegis of Ramgiri Maharaj, and the approval to construct a barrage on a river at Shani Devgaon village. Work on the diversion project to bring excess water from west-flowing rivers to Marathwada would begin this year, he added.

When will you arrest me, when will you shoot?: Didi challenges ‘Malpua'

1 2 Jhargram/Kolkata: Daring BJP to "shoot her", Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday took aim at the party's Bengal minder Amit Malviya for saying that she should be held accountable under NSA "for inciting linguistic conflict". Malviya's comment had come after the CM had criticised Delhi Police for its notice seeking translators for "Bangladeshi national language". "There is one 'Malpua'. He says I should be arrested under the NSA for speaking in favour of Bengali language. If you have the courage, tell me, when will you arrest me and shoot me? Even CPM fired at me. If I could withstand their torture, then I will chase these people away like flies," the CM said at Jhargram after leading a 3-km-long 'Bhasha Andolan' march in Jhargram. Without naming Malviya, the Bengal CM said: "I know of everyone's capabilities. Don't provoke me, else I will dig into history and reveal the names of those who sponsored CBI probes. Do your job properly, show respect and I will respect you." Saying that BJP can't handle the governance of the country, the CM warned that TMC would hold protest marches across the state whenever BJP bigwigs arrive in Bengal. "The day before yesterday, they did a meeting and said they would surely implement SIR. They won't be able to do anything." She went on to add: "They only want their people to benefit and deny others of their due." Banerjee said it was important for voters to understand BJP's "game plan". "BJP has decided to remove names from the voter list to win elections. They are saying that names must be added afresh. This is a BJP conspiracy to bring NRC. They removed the names of 7 lakh Hindu Bengalis in Assam. Now they are sending notices to people in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar. In MP, a tribal woman whose home is in Malda was deported to Bangladesh. Such atrocities by BJP... are you not ashamed," she asked, alleging that BJP was trying to bring in "party list" in the name of voter list.
