Dramatic moment Brit woman saved after being lost at sea for five days

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

A huge search and operation was deployed for missing Brit, Mary Gavin, last Wednesday after she vanished on a rented boat a day before on the island of Formentera near Ibiza
This is the astonishing moment a Brit missing for nearly five days at sea is rescued after making a desperate sign to a passing ship. A huge search and operation was deployed for missing Mary Gavin, 39, last Wednesday, after she vanished on a rented boat a day before on the Mediterranean island of Formentera.
Remarkably, she was rescued on Saturday afternoon after a ferry from Palma, Majorca, to the mainland Spanish east coast city of Valencia spotted her and raised the alarm.

One of the passengers on the boat that discovered the Mary and her small boat recalled the stunning moment they neared her as she called out for help, saying: 'She was dehydrated and sunburnt and had mouth sores. The waves complicated the rescue.'

Alejandro Rosera told Majorcan media outlet Cronica Balear: 'When we were about to pass by Formentera, we were told there was an emergency and we had to turn back.
'Later on we saw a woman on board a small boat. She had a life jacket on and another in her hand making gestures.
'It took about 40 minutes to get her onto our ship. The movement of the waves made the rescue more difficult. She had mouth sores and you could tell she was dehydrated so she was given water and a Coca Cola.
'Once we got to Valencia a large number of police and health professionals were waiting for her and assisted her immediately.'
News of the 5pm rescue on Saturday of the Brit emerged on Sunday morning when police confirmed Mary had been taken to hospital in Valencia.

The vessel she had lost her way in, a cream-coloured Quicksilver 475 Axess with a Mercury outboard motor which she had hired from a rental firm at Formentera's La Savina Port last Tuesday morning, was towed to Ibiza by coastguards.
Police divers had joined the search for her last Thursday after Civil Guard and Spanish coastguards helicopters and boats were mobilised.
Speaking on Sunday morning a Civil Guard spokesman said: 'The British woman who vanished after renting a boat in Formentera on Tuesday morning has been found alive.'

The police force had said on Friday in its first official comments about the disappearance: 'The missing woman is a 39-year-old British national who hired the boat in the port of La Savina in Formentera on Tuesday morning.
'She was supposed to return it around 6pm on Wednesday and when she didn't her friends became worried and raised the alarm. From the time she was reported missing on Wednesday evening a search operation was launched which continued throughout the day yesterday.

'She hasn't been found yet nor has the boat she was on.
'The Civil Guard's Judicial Police unit has been investigating this woman's disappearance but two vessels belonging to our Maritime Unit were mobilised yesterday along with one from the specialist sub-aquatic GEAS unit.
'The officers from the Maritime Unit conduct the searches from speedboats and the GEAS are essentially diving specialists.'
A police source said last week the missing woman had been living on one of the Balearic islands for around two months, although it was not immediately clear if the island is Ibiza or Formentera.
No more details have been given out by local authorities about what they think went wrong and why the woman ended up adrift and in difficulties.

Football yob who knocked out woman with chair during feisty poolside Ibiza brawl breaks silence to reveal reason behind his violent act

The yob footballer who was filmed hurling a chair at a woman's face during a shameful Ibiza poolside brawl has accused the victim of going down 'easily' but revealed he feels 'terrible' and 'apologetic' after 'accidentally hitting' her. Oldham Athletic striker Kian Harratt, 23, was seen launching the furniture in the direction of a middle-aged woman who was trying to break up a brawl between his friends and another group of Brit holidaymakers. After being hit the woman collapses to the ground holding her face while the other group fall into the pool and topless Harratt, exclusively identified by MailOnline, retreats out of shot. Since the video has been shared online on Sunday it has been reposted by the League Two footballer who has also shared various snaps of himself on holiday on the Spanish island. Harrat has now broken his silence on the fracas, alleging that he 'accidentally hit' the lady after throwing a chair back which had first been 'lobbed towards' him. While admitting he was 'very apologetic and 'felt terrible', the striker accused the woman of going 'down a bit easy' and said he would have felt 'even worse' if he allowed his mate to 'get badly beaten up while he's trying to enjoy his holiday'. Oldham Athletic striker Kian Harratt (black shorts, circled) appears to throw a chair at a woman in a video recently shared to social media 🪑😳 — The92Bible (@The92Bible) June 25, 2025 Harrat, who scored the winning goal at Wembley to secure Oldham's place in League 2 just three weeks ago, also claimed his group had merely been involved in the brawl after responding to a 'big bully' who allegedly made people at the pool feel uncomfortable. He said tensions had risen after his eighteen-year-old friend splashed the '6'6 bully' who was 'built like a brick'. Harrat also shared a video on TikTok which appeared to show his friend being punched in the face. His friend was then kicked while he was on the floor, the 23-year-old claimed, before it spilled over into a full on brawl, where the Oldham forward eventually hurled the chair at the woman. The same man who threw the punch at his friend is later seen falling into the pool. Posting on TikTok, Harratt wrote: 'Just for the people who have seen the video circling the internet of me throwing a chair 'FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON' 'Here's the fella who started it all and let me just say he was the worst man you could ever come across and a bully! 'He was 6,6 and built like a brick! Anyway he was swimming over to young couples while they're all chilling and trying to make the lad feel uncomfortable flirting with there girls and all sorts of daft stuff like that! @ Just for the people who have seen the video circling the internet off me throwing a chair 'FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON' 👍🏻 here's the fella who started it all and let me just say he was the worst man you could ever come across and a bully! He was 6,6 and built like a brick! Anyways he was swimming over to young couples while there at chilling and trying to make the lad feel uncomfortable flirting with there girls and all sorts off daft stuff like that! And one off my mates who is only 18 by the way jumped in the pool and started splashing him having a laugh like you do on holiday then it's stopped! After that my mate got out off the pool and the big fella shouted over to him wtf are you looking at so obviously my mates said to him I'm looking at you the fella as then flipped and started walking to my mate and the woman who gets his with the chair is in this video here trying to stop him my pal then goes dancing over to him not expecting the man to punch him…but anyways he hit my pal in the face and dropped him and then proceeded to kick him in the face while he was down👌🏻 the video cut off tho after that obviously like any normal mates would do we've backed him up I tried staying out the way as I don't want the trouble a chair then got lobbed towards me so I picked the chair up and threw it back and it accidentally hit the woman who as you can see went down abit easy but besides that I was very apologetic and I felt terrible, but I'd have felt even worse if we left my mate to get badly beaten up while he's trying to enjoy his holiday I hope this video opens peoples eyes I had to post it cause I've had nothing but abuse all morning and I'm sure this will clear it or so it should 👍🏻 #fyp ♬ original sound - 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗧𝘃 - 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗧𝘃 'And one off my mates who is only 18 by the way jumped in the pool and started splashing him having a laugh like you do on holiday then it's stopped! Brandon Watkins from Nuneaton, who was one of the lads confronted by Harratt's group at the Marco Polo Hotel in San Antonio, described the encounter in a post on Facebook. He wrote: 'Five lads came to our hotel being nobs around the pool splashing people throwing balls at women and one lad says 'what are you looking at' so he approaches me and I drop him… they then start throwing chairs because they couldn't fight and everyone knows how slippy it is round a pool so stopping chairs hitting us I slip in the pool and that's what went viral. 'If they let me get back out the pool or got in with me then they would have been slapped again but they didn't they got kicked out …. Everyone sat around the pool after was coming up to us shaking our hands and buying us drinks because the lads were bellends!' The brawl comes just three weeks after Harratt fired Oldham to Wembley glory, scoring the winning goal in extra-time of their 3-2 victory over Southend United to earn a League 2 spot next season. But fans were quick to condemn his actions and urged his club to tear up his contract. One posted: 'He just can't help himself can he. I've defended him multiple times [and] even was happy when he scored the winner against Southend but you can't be throwing chairs at women Kian.' Another commented: 'I'll be stunned if he plays for us this season. Embarrassment, no way for anybody to act – never mind someone in the public eye.' Kian's mother Kathleen Duncan said she was also aware of the video but did not want to comment. She said: 'Kian won't be back til later. He's still on holiday. I think he's meant to be flying this morning. He was supposed to have landed in Leeds but he cancelled his flight because he missed it. 'He wouldn't be able to say anything [about the video] - it would be down to his agent. He will be back later this afternoon.' Last year while on loan at Fleetwood Town from Huddersfield Town he was fined £1,000 by police after he was caught poaching in North Yorkshire. Police were called just before midnight on February 6 to investigate a vehicle being driven suspiciously around Whashton, near Richmond. A short while later Harratt, from Pontefract, and Daniel Luke Dimmock, 34, from Castleford were found carrying large black lamps, and with lurcher-type dogs on slip leads, police said. The men were searched, and their lamps and vehicle seized. They were both later charged with entering land as a trespasser at night with poaching equipment. They were found guilty of entering land as a trespasser at night with poaching equipment at Harrogate Magistrates Court on December 19 and fined £1,153 each, and ordered to pay hundreds of pounds more in costs and surcharges, according to police. He was also convicted of poaching at a farm in East Yorkshire in 2022 and fined £830, plus £233 costs. Also, Harratt was banned from football for four months in the 2023-24 season while at Huddersfield after placing 484 bets on matches over a three-year period. That came with a £3,200 fine and 36 of the bets were on Huddersfield games - though he insisted he was not in the matchday squad for any of them.

Porn sites to make major change to who can watch x-rated videos

People will have to verify their age to watch porn videos online, Ofcom has announced. From July 25, all sites that show pornographic material, will be required to check viewers are over 18 in a bid to prevent underage people developing addictions to X-rated content. Major porn providers in the UK including Pornhub, BoyfriendTV and Cam4 have all agreed to implement the change by next month's deadline. Eight per cent of British eight to 14-year-olds had visited a porn site or app in a month, a new study has found, including three per cent of eight to nine year olds. Boys aged 13 to 14 were the most likely to view porn with 19 per cent having done so, with girls seeing significantly less, on 11 per cent. Technology secretary Peter Kyle, said: 'Children will be prevented from accessing porn from next month thanks to the Online Safety Act. 'I'm glad to see that Pornhub and others have today made it clear they will be bringing in tough age assurance methods to comply with the law.' Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom's director of online safety, said the change would bring pornography in line with other adult restricted activities such as smoking and drinking alcohol. He said: 'Society has long protected youngsters from products that aren't suitable for them, from alcohol to smoking or gambling. But for too long children have been only a click away from harmful pornography online. 'Now, change is happening. These age checks will bring pornography into line with how we treat adult services in the real world, without compromising access and privacy for over-18s.' Marcus Johnstone of PCD Solicitors, a firm which specialises in providing legal representation for people accused of sexual offences, said the 'frighteningly easy' access of explicit material by minors had become a 'dangerous trend'. He said: 'I come across people of all ages in my work who are addicted to porn and there is no question that this is starting at an ever younger age. 'The platforms are designed to be addictive and can lead people to seek progressively more extreme material. In some cases, porn can influence real life behaviour encouraging impressionable young people to try rough sex and so on.' But he added that increased scrutiny from Ofcom and the threat of fines alone would not be enough to combat the issue, and that preventing children from accessing porn in an age where people are having sex earlier. 'The big challenge for the websites and apps that offer legal pornography is how to ensure robust and effective age checks when we know the youngsters of today are agile at circumvention', he said. 'I hope the threat of fines and scrutiny from OFCOM help but it would seem to me that until we introduce ID cards and digital ID it will be impossible for the tech companies to ensure proper compliance.' More Trending 'Of course the real danger zone for pornographic material is the dark web where extreme and illegal material proliferates and there is frighteningly easy access.' 'I have cases where clients as young as 14 access the dark web. In one case my client, aged 15, accessed the dark web to buy drugs (delivered to his local Post Office) but also then found access to extreme illegal pornography.' He continued: 'As a society we must accept that children, although illegal, are having sex at a younger age. In my opinion it will be impossible to stop them viewing porn sites. Any teenager with a phone can now watch and read content that is both illegal and heinous, and is unregulated by any company or agency. 'It is the dark web that is the greatest menace to our society and is a gateway to a world of abuse, exploitation and radicalisation. This is where better policing is required but if we can stop our kids wanting to go there in the first place that must be a good thing.' The 62 year-old had been home with family – as well as two young children – when she said she then heard 'a bang' quickly followed by another. The mum today told jurors at the High Court in Glasgow: "We obviously knew that it was a gun. They were firing a gun." Georgina was giving evidence at the trial of six men who have gone on trial accused of murdering Neil on February 23, 2023. Jack Benson, 24, Dale Russell, 31, Martin McCusker, 41, Brendan Balloch, 25, Kieran Hendry, 26, and Michael Munro, 27, all deny the charge. It is claimed that, while acting along with another, they repeatedly discharged a firearm at Neil and did shoot him in the head. The six have also pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of the others in the house that night. Georgina was the first witness in the trial which started today. Testifying behind a screen, the mum told how Neil had been staying with her at the time. Other relatives - including her elder son David - were also there that night. Georgina had come home after a 12-hour shift working as a care assistant. Horror moment Scots gangster Ross Monaghan is shot dead by hitman at Spanish pub She said she remembered chatting and having a coffee with those present split between the living room and kitchen. Prosecutor Alan Cameron KC asked the witness did she later become aware of "something outside". Georgina said her grand-daughter had noticed people in the street and said to her: "Gran, who is that?" Georgina then told jurors: "I looked out. There were five figures at the bottom of the stairs and one at the side of my car on a bike." She said Neil then came from the kitchen, also had a look and believed one of the group was a friend, who lived nearby. The witness stated: "He went to answer the door and I sat back down." But, asked by Mr Cameron what then happened, she added: "A couple of seconds later there was a loud bang then another bang." Georgina told how she immediately "grabbed" the two children sitting on the couch. She called on her grand-daughter to "get everyone on the floor" in the kitchen and they went behind a freezer. The trial, before judge Lady Drummond, continues.
