Ranked: Five greatest Orlando Pirates wingers
Orlando Pirates has a rich tradition of showcasing skilful and speedy wingers, many of whom have represented the South African national team.
In recent years, the Buccaneers have featured players like Thabo Rakhale, Monnapule Saleng, and Thembinkosi Lorch, among others.
While many wingers have come and gone, a select few have made a significant impact on the club.
Here are the five greatest Orlando Pirates wingers since the inception of the PSL:
Helman Mkhalele
The current Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Mkhalele played nearly 200 games for the Buccaneers between 1993 and 1997, winning several titles, including the CAF Champions League. Known as 'Midnight Express,' he was a joy to watch on the wing during his time with both the Bucs and Pirates.
Steve Lekoelea
A fan favourite at Orlando Pirates, Lekoelea is regarded as one of the most talented wingers the country has ever seen. He made his debut at 16 for Moroka Swallows, and his career blossomed after joining the Buccaneers in 1995. He became a club legend, winning two league titles. Unfortunately, his full potential was never realised due to off-field issues, and by the time he turned 30, he was already semi-retired.
Daine Klate
Known as Matatazela, Klate undoubtedly brought a stroke of luck to Pirates in 2010. After winning three league titles with SuperSport United, he joined the Buccaneers, who had not won a domestic cup in ten years (with seven years since their last league title). Klate turned Pirates' fortunes around, winning six trophies in his first two seasons.
Dikgang Mabalane
Mabalane, nicknamed Terminator, is one of the most underrated wingers in Orlando Pirates' history. Before joining the Bucs in 2008, he had already achieved success with Jomo Cosmos. His move to Pirates not only enhanced his game but also elevated his status as a player. Unlike many others who falter upon joining a big club, Mabalane consistently performed well, and even at 35, he was still considered one of the league's most skilful and quickest wingers.
Relebohile Mofokeng
At just 20 years old, Mofokeng has already accomplished more than most wingers in Orlando Pirates' history. The talented attacker has played two full seasons and has impressed significantly, making him one of the best players in the PSL currently. He deserves consideration for Player of the Season.

Alexander Bublik keeps rolling at French Open
Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik continued his winning run at the French Open by defeating Great Britain's Jack Draper 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 on Court Suzanne Lenglen at Roland-Garros on Monday. When Bublik was asked after the match what he thought the key was to his victory, he wasn't completely sure. 'I don't know, to be honest. I left it all out there. You know, I have certain skill set to play tennis, and it worked marvellously today. '100% one of the best days of my life and one of the best matches I have ever played in my life. That was as simple as that.' Bublik's results this year on clay are better than all his previous three years' results combined. He was asked what he think has changed. 'Maybe this is the first year I haven't complained about playing on clay, as I don't have a lot of options because I was dropping a lot in the rankings.' Bublik was up front when talking about his philosophy of how he lives his life. 'I still do the exact minimum and maximum at the same time in order to be the player I am, to be in the position I am, and I will continue with this path, because I think I prioritise tennis and the life in equal ways.' 'So, for me it's a 50/50 relationship. So, it's not like tennis takes 90, and then it's okay. If I can't walk at the age of 40, it's okay. No, it's not. So, for me it's finding the balance.' Bublik values being healthy over possibly compromising his health by pushing his body beyond its limits. 'It's doing necessarily what I have to do in order to be able to compete against the top of the game, which I showcased every season I played in the past six, seven years, but will I put my health on the line? No.' Bublik outlined that he is willing to work hard but with a balanced approach. 'There is no way around hard work. Don't get me wrong. I work hard, but on my terms, you know. I do what I'm capable of doing with my body, but I will not push through a knee injury in order to have, you know, a certain chance to win a certain match. So, for me, there is no way around hard work.' Apart from prioritising his health, Bublik also prioritises his family. 'But as I said, I prioritise the health and my lifestyle, as well, because I have a family and I'm a father, and I have to do the father duties. This is a 50/50 balance.' It appears that Bublik's authentic nature is beginning to win over more and more fans at this year's French Open. There is more to Bublik than meets the eye. Next up for Bublik is a quarter-final clash against world No 1 Jannik Sinner on Wednesday. Where is the Orlando Pirates doing pre-season tour?
Orlando Pirates will be enjoying a pre-season tour after a well-deserved break at the end of 2024-2025. Where are the Sea Robbers going? Pirates were in Spain for the European summer last year. This time around, they're reportedly heading to Germany. 'What I know is that the club is believed to be changing their pre-season training camp from Spain to Germany. For now, almost all the logistics for the trip to Germany are as good as done. All the involved parties are believed to have agreed on this pre-season camp in Germany.' 'At that time (of the tour), they are believed to have the new coach in, when they are going to Germany. They want to use that time to build a bond between the new coach, the technical team, and the players to get ready for next season,' a second source told Soccer Laduma. Orlando Pirates fans are expectant on Soweto Derby Day. Image: BackpagePix Although the Buccaneers are blessed with options at the sharp end with Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa and Boitumelo Radiopane, they might be looking at a different style of number 9. Fiston Mayele is a popular name in the media, but will they go for a guy on the wrong side of 30, especially with a rumoured price tag of R12 million? What did Makgopa and Mabasa do to offend Hugo Broos? Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Birthday girl Kgothatso Montjane wins Round 1 match at Roland-Garros
South African star Kgothatso Montjane won her first round wheelchair match against Chile's Macarena Cabrillana 6-3, 6-3 in windy conditions on court 11 at Roland-Garros on Tuesday. The win coincided with Montjane's 39th birthday. She mentioned that she was very chuffed when arriving at Roland-Garros this morning, she was asked if she was competing in the junior event! Prior to the commencement of the match, Kgothatso Montjane had some equipment issues with a broken strap on her wheelchair. It was repaired and then the repairs had to be redone. 'It's time for a new chair. This one is six-years-old. It might be tired.' Thankfully, the chair issues did not impact Montjane's performance, although there were some anxious moments prior to the match. 'I was just hopeful that they (organisers) would get me going.' There were potential issues with Montjane not being able to stay in her chair if the strap was not able to be repaired. 'If the strap was unable to be repaired, it would have made it challenging for the umpire as the rules state that I must be in the chair at all times.' Regarding her win, Montjane was not totally satisfied with her performance. 'It was a good win, but I honestly feel like it could have been better. 'I made the match difficult for myself. I felt like that I didn't use the court really well. 'I dropped quite a lot of balls short.' There were some positives for Montjane. 'However, I played well under pressure. After taking the lead in the first set, I felt like I should have taken control. 'I'm glad I managed to seal it up. 'It could be better. I'm not happy with the complete play.' Kgothatso Montjane described wanting more patience on her opponents serve. 'I was moving in too early, I had to wait and then I killed the momentum. 'I like it more when my opponent serves faster, and the ball has more energy. 'Otherwise, I have to create the energy myself.' Montjane outlined some areas of improvement she would like for her next match. 'I want to be more consistent, hit with more depth, and put more speed on the ball. I want more topspin with my forehand so that I don't continue to hit the balls long.' The conditions on court 11 consisted of a strong, swirling wind. 'The wind made it hard for my ball toss and I found it tricky to work out which way that the wind was blowing.' Kgothatso Montjane admitted that she was unlikely to celebrate her birthday as she is currently battling a neck injury as a result 'of playing for the last three weeks.' 'All I want to do is shower, get my neck worked on, and get as much rest as I can.' Montjane revealed that she supports Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United. Kaizer Chiefs finished ninth in the recently-concluded Betway Premiership, while Manchester United fared even worse, ending 15th in the English Premier League. Kgothatso Montjane will need to show as much determination as it took supporting those teams this season when she next plays! Montjane will next be up against fourth seed Ziying Wang of China in the quarter-finals.
