Detroit Tigers' Tarik Skubal on F-bomb at Mother Nature, Paul Skenes fandom, Game 1 desire
Pitching in the rain, Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal walked two batters in a row in the first inning, stranded the bases loaded with two outs on four pitches and showed his emotions as he entered the dugout.
He dropped the F-bomb.

That's not out of the ordinary, but it has been a while since Skubal turned to an expletive to express his feelings. This time, he was cussing out the weather in Game 1 of the doubleheader on Thursday, June 19, against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park.
"I think he was mad at the rain," manager A.J. Hinch said, following the Tigers' 9-2 Game 1 win. "The rain got him. It frustrated him. He wanted to figure it out. He took it out on himself — and other areas."
GAME 1: Tarik Skubal gets plenty of run support in Tigers' 9-2 win over Pirates

Indeed, the rain rattled Skubal in the first inning.

Let him explain.
"I was just a little upset with the weather," Skubal said. "I was a little upset. I felt like we could have started that game — from the third inning on, I felt like it was very manageable, so it just felt like we could have started that game a little bit later. Warming up, it was coming down pretty good. I think that's what I was more frustrated at. My hat is literally leaking water in front of my face as I'm pitching. I'm like, 'Why didn't we just wait?' That's kind of what I'm thinking, and that's where it's frustrating to me. When it's raining like that, the mound gets ruined, so there's not much you can do after that. That was frustrating, for sure. But their guy is playing in it, just like we are, so you can't let it affect you. I probably did let it impact me a little bit. I guess that's something I can take away in the future, just don't let outside things that you can't control impact your emotions."
Skubal allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts across 5⅔ innings, tossing a season-high 103 pitches. The Pirates scored in the fifth and sixth innings.
It was one of Skubal's worst starts of the season.

"If that's an off day for him, it's still a pretty good day," Hinch said.
Skubal has a 2.06 ERA in 15 starts.
"I don't think I met the standard of who I think I am," said Skubal, who surpassed 100 pitches for the first time this season. "I don't think I was very good. But we won, so it doesn't really matter how I feel or what I think. The goal every time I'm out there is to win, and we won today, won a series and have a chance to sweep. On to the next one."

Tarik Skubal talks Paul Skenes
The Tigers and Pirates had a chance to create an epic matchup between Skubal and right-hander Paul Skenes in Thursday's doubleheader, but Skubal chose to start Game 1 — and Pirates manager Don Kelly started Skenes in Game 2 in a managerial decision based on what was best for his team.

Fans were robbed of Skubal vs. Skenes in Game 1.
"Selfishly, I'm glad that I'm not pitching (Game 2) so I can dial in and watch him," Skubal said. "As much as I play the game, I'm the biggest fan as probably anybody else. I'll be able to watch, and hopefully, we tag him up a little bit, but his stuff is pretty good."
SO CLOSE: Tarik Skubal vs. Paul Skenes won't happen this time. But players agree it would've been fun
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the seventh inning at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
In 2024, Skubal won the American League Cy Young Award and Skenes won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Both players were honored at the Baseball Writers Association of America awards dinner in late January 2025.

They've crossed paths a couple of times.
"I think the way he carries himself is great," Skubal said. "The head on his shoulders is very mature. He knows his routine. He's bought into what makes him good. I feel like he's always trying to get better at something. It shows with who he is on the mound."
Skenes, 23, has started 38 games in his two-year MLB career — 23 games in 2024 and 15 games in 2025. The No. 1 overall pick in 2023 has a 1.89 ERA with 267 strikeouts across 229 career innings, including a 1.78 ERA entering Thursday's start.
Here's a tidbit: Skubal had a 4.40 ERA in the first 38 games of his MLB career, back in 2020-21.

"I can't say my career started the same way, but he's great for the game," said Skubal, now in his sixth MLB season. "Everybody wants to watch him play. We need the stars to be on the field for the product to be good and to make fans want to come to the yard. It's great for everyone involved, including myself."
JEFF SEIDEL: One story about Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle sheds insight into why he's different
As for stardom, Skubal has been the best pitcher in baseball for the past three years, with a 2.39 ERA and 447 strikeouts across 368⅓ innings in 61 starts. The 28-year-old is tracking to become the first AL pitcher to win the Cy Young in back-to-back seasons since Pedro Martínez in 1999-2000.
Meanwhile, Skenes is the frontrunner to win the NL Cy Young in 2025.

"I'm a fan," Skubal said.
Tarik Skubal explains Game 1 preference
Skubal chose to start Game 1 when Hinch asked him about his preference for Thursday's doubleheader, following the postponement of the game Wednesday, June 18, due to thunderstorms at Comerica Park.
He could've picked Game 2.
But there's a reason he wanted Game 1.
"I've always just wanted to throw the first game," Skubal said. "Whether this is true or not, I think that I like all my guys to be fresh behind me. Not saying they're not fresh for Game 2, but it's just more about my mental buy-in — that I know our guys are ready to go. I'll always throw Game 1."
The only way Skubal wouldn't throw Game 1 is if a pitcher with more MLB service time — such as right-hander Jack Flaherty, for example — demanded the first game of a doubleheader.
Skubal has performed slightly better in day games compared to night games in his 121-game career, posting a 3.04 ERA in day games and a 3.29 ERA in night games.
That's not why he chose Game 1.
It's just his preference for all doubleheaders.
"Starting the second game of a doubleheader when it's straight is tough because it's 40 minutes after the first game ends," Skubal said, "but who knows when the first game ends? I start my routine two hours before the game. It's a little bit different when you don't know the second game time. That's why I just prefer to throw Game 1, if I have any say in it."

From heat to unrest: how five major Club World Cup storylines are shaping up
The Club World Cup is into the second round of games in the group stage, with matches across the United States showing off all that was hotly anticipated about this newly expanded tournament, as well as a few concerns. Here's a breakdown of five major storylines we were keeping track of before the games, and where we stand. Attendances Your view on how well-attended these games have been depends heavily on your perspective. Empty seats have been visible, sometimes in great numbers, at nearly every game (none of which have been sellouts). That said, the raw attendance numbers have not been half-bad, considering that many kick-off times have fallen at noon or 3pm during work days. Advertisement There have been 20 games at the Club World Cup so far. The average attendance has been 35,525. The median is about the same. About 730,000 tickets have been sold or distributed for these matches. All of these are reasonably solid figures. On the other hand, the stadiums have, on average, been about 55% full. The median percentage of capacity used – a figure that gives less weight to outliers such as the 3,142 who attended Mamelodi Sundowns v Ulsan in Orlando – is 45%. With a few exceptions, the tournament is being playing in massive NFL stadiums, and that means a lot of empty seats. The environments, though, have largely been very good. South American fans in particular have brought it, with Brazilians in New York and Argentinians in Miami creating noisy and invested atmospheres that seem right at home at a tournament with the World Cup name. Thanks to the massiveness of these stadiums, though, the optics are not always the best. Heat and weather It's been hot at times, but the tournament has also been lucky so far in that many cities, especially New York, have been experiencing cooler-than-normal temperatures over the past week. The most notable exception was Paris Saint-Germain v Atlético Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, where the heat combined with crowd control issues and a lack of water contributed to what the Guardian was told was a 'dangerous' environment for fans. It wasn't comfortable for the players either. Advertisement 'Playing in this heat is impossible,' Atlético's Marcos Llorente said after. 'The heat is terrible. My toes hurt, even my toenails … We are adapting to the heat of playing at these hours … no one in Europe is used to it.' The next several days will see more of these situations. A brutal heatwave is set to hit much of the eastern United States starting on Friday, covering many of the stadiums where the remaining games will be played. Evening kick-offs will be hot but theoretically bearable once the sun is down. The problematic games will be those that kick off in the afternoon local time – there are 14 of those left in the group stage, including six that start at noon, when the heat will probably be at its worst in the direct sunlight. And that's without even getting into weather delays. Already, there have been three weather-related delays – mostly for lightning as thunderstorms have gathered amid the humid weather. There is very little Fifa can do about those, of course – but it's a trend worth keeping an eye on. There is a chance, of course, the delays could disrupt the simultaneous kick-offs in the group finales. Political unrest The opening matches of this tournament were awash with reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) and/or Customs and Border Protection officers would be present at games and looking to continue their public raids, which have been met with counterprotests across the country. That has yet to happen. Advertisement Make no mistake, security is high at these games, as they are at any major sporting event in the United States. But there haven't been any reported attempts at mass arrests as there have been in other places around the country. That is not to say politics, world events and the tournament haven't overlapped. Mehdi Taremi, Inter's Iran striker, has been forced to miss the tournament after being stuck in Tehran after Israel's attacks on the city. And this week Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, and a delegation from Juventus (including the US internationals Weston McKennie and Tim Weah) stood in the Oval Office as Trump answered questions about a potential war with Iran and awkwardly asked the players if women could play for Juventus (a reference to the right-wing talking point about trans women in women's sports). Club performances On the field, the story of the tournament so far has been the performance of South American clubs. Teams representing Conmebol have not lost, the only undefeated confederation remaining after one matchday in every group. They've achieved some pretty big results along the way – including Botafogo's 1-0 win over the reigning Champions League winners PSG on Thursday night, and River Plate's 2-2 draw with Benfica. Advertisement Asian and Oceanian teams are having far less fun. The confederations' five teams have yet to win, with Auckland City suffering a 10-0 demolition by Bayern Munich. The lone bright spot for Asian clubs was Al-Hilal's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid – a game in which the Saudi Pro League side looked every bit Madrid's equals in Xabi Alonso's first game in charge. Generally speaking, and in line with past editions of the Club World Cup, the so-called 'smaller' teams are the ones bringing real life to this party, while most Uefa teams are waiting for their first big challenge. The final group games and knockouts should be plenty of fun. Standout players It's a bit early to say anyone is making a case for the Golden Ball given most teams have played one game, but a few players have stood out. Advertisement One, unsurprisingly, is Lionel Messi. The Inter Miami superstar is a player Fifa bent over backwards to get into the tournament, awarding Miami a 'host nation' slot after they failed to qualify through other means. That decision has paid off. Messi is 37 and has clearly slowed a little, but he remains capable of delivering in big moments, as he did with a winning free-kick goal against Porto. Pretty much all of Bayern stand out after that ridiculous scoreline, even if it came against amateur opposition. Jamal Musiala has the early claim on the Golden Boot, having scored a hat-trick in that game. For Manchester City, Phil Foden got off on the right foot with a goal and an assist against Wydad, and Chelsea's new signing Liam Delap made a positive impact on his debut, a 2-0 win over LAFC. Kylian Mbappé, meanwhile, has been a notable absence, having been briefly in hospital this week with gastroenteritis.

Analyst's QB rankings shockingly leaves Commanders' Jayden Daniels outside of top 10
Rankings are subjective. Remember that. That doesn't mean we can't review some rankings and ask: "What were they thinking?" Such is the case with a recent list from Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports. McDonald ranked his version of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks and omitted the Washington Commanders' QB Jayden Daniels. Advertisement Here's McDonald's list: At first glance, I thought it was a mistake. How could McDonald leave Daniels off his list? It's understandable if he didn't rank Daniels No. 5. While several already believe Daniels is a top-five signal caller, some believe he still has much to prove. Neither perspective is wrong. Daniels did things last season that no other rookie has ever done. He won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, led the Commanders to the NFC championship game and the franchise's best season in 33 years. McDonald's top four is inarguable: Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow. Regardless of the order, those are the NFL's top four QBs heading into 2025. Beginning at No. 5 is where things get interesting. Advertisement McDonald chose Justin Herbert over Daniels. Herbert is 0-2 as a starting quarterback in the playoffs, while Daniels won two playoff games as a rookie. No, there's more to quarterbacking than playoff wins or win/loss record, but, based on last season, would you take Herbert over Daniels? McDonald ranked the QBs into four tiers: the Patrick Mahomes tier, the almost-Mahomes tier, the ceiling-raiser tier, and the floor-raiser tier. Jackson and Allen landed in the second tier, while Burrow, Herbert and Matthew Stafford all landed in the third tier. Finally, Dak Prescott, Geno Smith, Jordan Love and C.J. Stroud landed in the final tier. Daniels should be in everyone's top 10. So should Baker Mayfield. Could anyone make the case that Prescott, Smith and Love are better than Daniels or Mayfield? Who would make up your top 10? Where would you rank Daniels? Advertisement Remember, rankings are subjective.
