United Airlines resumes operations, blames tech glitch for grounded flights and stranded passengers
United Airlines faced major disruptions on Wednesday (August 6) after a technology issue forced a temporary ground stop at multiple US airports and caused widespread delays across its network. The issue has since been resolved, the airline confirmed, though residual delays are expected. 'While we expect residual delays, our team is working to restore our normal operations,' United said in a statement late Wednesday. The glitch prompted the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue ground stops for United flights at several of its major hubs, including Newark, Denver, Houston, and Chicago. According to United, the problem stemmed from its Unimatic system, which manages key flight information. This data feeds into other crucial systems, including those responsible for calculating weight and balance and tracking flight times. As of 10:25 p.m. ET Wednesday, flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 1,038 United flights—about 34% of its daily schedule—had been delayed. The FAA acknowledged the tech issue and said it had provided support to help clear the backlog. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that the problem was isolated to United and did not impact the broader air traffic control system.

Bihar Assembly elections: Why women voters' turnout matters
Women are once again at the centre of Bihar's electoral landscape as Assembly elections approach. The Nitish Kumar government recently announced a 35 per cent reservation for women in state government jobs, yet another in a series of women-centric policies by the Janata Dal (United) leader, who cultivated a loyal base of female voters through a slew of welfare political parties strategising for 2025, one trend is impossible to ignore: women are turning out in large numbers to vote. This is no longer a statistical anomaly. It has been a recurring theme. In the 2020 Assembly elections, women outvoted men in 167 of the 243 constituencies, most of them in northern Bihar. And the region leaned heavily towards the National Democratic the 2020 polls, women's turnout stood at 60 per cent, compared to 54 per cent for men. In 166 constituencies, women outnumbered male voters. The widest gender turnout gap was recorded in Baisi (Purnea district), where women's turnout was 22 percentage points higher than men's. Kusheshwar Asthan followed closely with a 21-percentage-point gap in favour of women. Both constituencies were won by the NDA. In the 2020 Assembly elections, women outvoted men in 167 of the 243 constituencies, most of them in northern Bihar. And the region leaned heavily towards the National Democratic trend was even more pronounced in 2015, when women outvoted men in 202 constituencies. Once again, northern Bihar led in female voter shift began in 2010, a turning point in Bihar's gender voting dynamics. That year, women's voter turnout surpassed men's in 162 constituencies. It was the first time that overall female turnout exceeded male Madhubani, which has 10 assembly constituencies, eight went to the NDA in the 2020 Assembly elections. All five seats in the Supaul district were won by the NDA. In Sitamarhi, the NDA secured six of eight seats, while in Darbhanga, it claimed nine out of ten in the last decades, men dominated Bihar's voter turnout. In the 1962 Assembly elections, 55 per cent of men voted, compared to just 32 per cent of women. This gender gap persisted until 2000. By February 2005, it had begun to close: 50 per cent of men and 43 per cent of women cast ballots in the first of the two Assembly elections held that came 2010, a historic turning point: 54 per cent of women voted, surpassing the 51 per cent turnout among men for the first time. In 2015, the gap widened further, with 60 per cent of women voting compared to just 50 per cent of 1962, women's turnout has risen by 28 percentage points, effectively reversing the gender gap at the ballot box and establishing women as one of the most powerful voting blocs in Bihar today.(With inputs from Smriti Thakur)- EndsTune InMust Watch

Manchester United Reach Agreement In Principle To Sign RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko: Report
Last Updated: RB Leipzig will reportedly sell striker Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United for €85 million. Despite Newcastle's bid, Šeško prefers Old Trafford. United may include Rasmus Højlund. It seems as if the dream might be coming to life for the Red Devils. RB Leipzig has reportedly reached a personal agreement in principle with Manchester United to sell sought-after striker Benjamin Šeško for an estimated €85 million. According to The Athletic, a deal worth €76.5million and €8.5 million in add-ons has been set in place, with Šeško permitted to travel for medical tests ahead of the proposed move. Newcastle United have also pursued Šeško and saw a bid of €82.5m plus €2.5m in add-ons accepted by Leipzig on Tuesday. But, the Slovenia international seemingly has favoured a move to Old Trafford, and hence Newcastle's hopes fell flat with their proposed move. This comes despite Newcastle providing UEFA Champions League football in 2025-26. Šeško scored 21 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season and has recorded 39 goals and eight assists in 87 appearances for the Bundesliga team since joining from RB Salzburg in 2023. United's Financial Flexibility: Buy Now, Balance Later Despite needing to sell players this summer, Manchester United are in a position to buy before selling, provided that outgoing deals are completed before the end of the window. With a third straight summer of goal-scoring concerns, Amorim has made it clear that bolstering the frontline is essential, and Šeško, with his blend of size, movement, and technical ability, fits the mold of a long-term No. 9. Manchester United have already strengthened up front with the additions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. But, the need for a classic No. 9 still remains. A potential breakthrough could come via a player-plus-cash deal involving Rasmus Højlund, United's current striker. RB Leipzig are reportedly open to selling Šeško if United include Højlund in the offer, along with a financial sweetener. Højlund, 22, joined United last summer amid high expectations but struggled in his second campaign, netting just four Premier League goals in 2024–25 after an encouraging 10-goal debut season. While some at United remain confident in his long-term potential, Leipzig sees an opportunity to acquire a talented young forward who could thrive in the Bundesliga's more developmental environment. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
