Great-grandson fights to honour Southampton football hero

A great-grandson is fighting to see a Saints legend recognised in football history.
Ted Drake, the Southampton-born striker who became an Arsenal legend, has narrowly missed out on entry to the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame in Manchester.

Drake, who played for Saints from 1931 to 1934 before joining Arsenal, has been described by his great-grandson Liam Harding as "arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time."
Liam, who put forward the nomination, said: "It's really disappointing that my Great Grandfather was denied nomination into the Footballers Hall of Fame.
"He is arguably one of the greatest players to play the game in his time alongside the likes of Stanley Matthews, Alex James, Nat Lofthouse etc who are all in the Hall of Fame where he belongs also.
"He inspired millions of people and no man since has scored more goals in an English top-flight game of football.

"It's essential for the history of the game and its supporters that his name is remembered on a national scale for eternity in the Footballers Hall of Fame where he deserves to be for the feats he set."

Drake passed the initial stage of the selection process but fell short in the second round.
He will automatically be considered again during the next round of nominations in October.
During his time at Arsenal, Drake set several records, including scoring seven goals in a single top-flight match on December 14, 1935.

He remains Arsenal's fastest player to reach 100 goals, achieving the milestone in just 108 games.
He also holds the record for most goals in a single season for the club, with 44.
After injury ended his playing career, Drake moved into management and led Chelsea to their first league title in 1955.
He became the first person to win the English top flight as both a player and a manager.
Liam has dedicated much of this year to preserving his great-grandfather's legacy.
In February, he worked with Arsenal to install a memorial plaque at Highbury, where Drake's ashes have rested since 1995.
He hopes that Drake, currently Arsenal's fifth-highest all-time goalscorer with 139 goals, will be recognised in the next round of Hall of Fame nominations.

Juventus 2-5 Manchester City: Rodri stars on return to starting XI as Bianconeri humbled in Orlando

Manchester City were unrelenting on Thursday night as they put five goals past Juventus to top their Club World Cup group. The two sides came into the match level on both points and goal difference, but with the knowledge that whoever finished atop the group would move on to a more friendly side of the knockout draw, likely to avoid the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. Advertisement City had cruised through the tournament until this point and today faced their first proper test, but swiftly reduced the 36-time Serie A champions to the level of their minnow groupmates Wydad AC and Al-Ain, closing out the group stages with a statement win marked by flashy, swaggering goals. Juventus will progress despite the humbling defeat, but will likely be made to face Real Madrid in the round of 16, a task they will not look forward to after a demoralising result. City, on the other hand, look set to face RB Salzburg. City finding a new top gear coincided with Rodri's return to the starting lineup, ten months after suffering an ACL injury which saw him miss much of last season. He produced the same kind of display which won him the Ballon d'Or, pulling the strings from midfield as he completed 65 minutes. City wasted little time out of the blocks. Rayan Ait-Nouri and Jeremy Doku were both lively in the early stages, so it was little surprise that they would be the men to combine for the opener. Advertisement The Algerian full-back slotted a sumptuous ball through to the winger, who cut inside and delivered a tidy curled finish into the far bottom corner, well beyond the reach of the 'keeper Michele Di Gregorio. Their lead did not hold for long, though. An uncharacteristic misplaced pass from Ederson found only Teun Koopmeiners, who drove at goal and fired home ruthlessly from close range in what would prove to be the only clear-cut Juventus chance of the half. Ederson was lucky, though, as his error was not the worst of the day, or even the worst of the half. City's lead was soon restored as Pierre Kalulu produced a baffling own goal. Pierre Kalulu remonstrates after his own goal (Getty Images) Matheus Nunes drove to the byline and squared a tame cross into the empty penalty area. Kalulu, under no pressure, turned the ball into his own net from the edge of the six-yard box. Advertisement Omar Marmoush did what he could to extend City's lead before the break, forcing a fingertip save from Di Gregorio with a 30-yard piledriver, but the advantage remained at one as the whistle blew. That effort proved his final involvement, too, as he was replaced by Erling Haaland at halftime. The talismanic Norwegian had an immediate impact. Tijjani Reijnders flashed down the right flank and pulled a cross across the box for Haaland to bundle home. It was not the prettiest finish of his career, but they all count. City then produced their statement goals of the afternoon. After a rare Juventus chance, Ederson hoofed the ball long to Haaland, who fed Foden and Savinho to walk the ball over the line, immediately quashing any threat of a comeback. Another punishing blow followed as Di Gregorio saved well from Haaland, only to see Savinho smash a screamer in off the bar from 25 yards. Advertisement Kenan Yıldız then teed up Dušan Vlahović to pull one back, but, it was far too little, far too late. Igor Tudor will be left to pick up the pieces and answer awkward questions after leaving some of his top players out of the starting 11. He must do so quickly, too, with the round of 16 only a few days away. Pep Guardiola, though, is sitting pretty. He and City could not be in a more comfortable position as they head into the knockout phase as definite favourites.

Heatwave to serve hottest start to Wimbledon with temperatures to hit 35C

A heatwave will serve the hottest ever start to Wimbledon, with temperatures due to hit 35C. Sunday may reach 31C in parts of southern England, but Monday will be even hotter, with highs of 34C in central and eastern England, forecasters say. Since 1960, UK temperatures in June have surpassed 34C in only three years, with the hottest being 35.6C, recorded on June 28 1976. Parts of south-east England could then hit 35C on Tuesday, forecaster Matthew Lenhert said, which would be hotter than Barbados. Wimbledon is set for its hottest opening day on record on Monday and could even see the highest temperature ever recorded during the tournament. The hottest ever Wimbledon day was on July 1 2015, when temperatures reached 35.7C. The warmest opening day on record was on June 25 2001, when temperatures hit 29.3C. Heatwave conditions will affect much of Continental Europe through the next week, but with the focus of the most anomalous heat moving southeast with time Temperatures are expected to be 5-10°C above normal fairly widely, with some locations continuing to exceed 40°C 🌡️ — Met Office (@metoffice) June 29, 2025 The hottest day of 2025 so far was recorded on June 21 in Charlwood, Surrey, when temperatures hit 33.2C. Tropical nights are also in store for many, with temperatures overnight not dropping below 20C, Mr Lenhert said. Fresher air is then expected to move in from the west in the middle of the week, bringing an end to the heatwave. It comes as a second amber heat health alert in two weeks came into force on Friday. The alert, which covers London, the East Midlands, South East, South West and East of England, will last until 6pm on Tuesday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also issued a yellow alert for Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands for the same time period, with the agency warning of significant impacts across health and social care services. An amber alert was previously issued for all regions in England on June 19, the first time it had been used since September 2023. An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days, with thresholds varying from 25C to 28C in different parts of the UK. London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Thomas Goodall said: 'London is already facing its second heatwave of the year and we know that people will be looking forward to getting outside to enjoy the wonderful weather. 'But the high temperatures and low rainfall in recent months means the current risk of wildfires is severe. 'So far this year, firefighters have responded to around 14 wildfires in the capital. 'There have also been countless call outs to smaller fires involving grass, trees and in other outdoor spaces, as well as in people's gardens. 'During this latest heatwave, it is important everyone acts responsibly to prevent fires from occurring. 'As the weather has been so dry, it only takes a few sparks to lead to a fire spreading rapidly. 'In London, this is can be dangerous because so many of our green spaces lie close to homes and other properties.' There will be a 'marked difference' in north-western parts of the UK however, with cloud and heavy rain in parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland, where temperatures will stay in the mid to high teens, Mr Lenhert said. The hottest ever July 1 on record was in 2015, when the temperature hit 36.7C.
