Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella gets new 2025 MLB draft projection
The 2025 MLB Draft is set for July 13-14 during All-Star Week festivities in Atlanta, and Clemson baseball has its own star hoping to hear his name called on day one.
That player, of course, is outfielder Cam Cannarella, who put together a terrific season as a junior. Cannarella hit .353 overall with five home runs and 22 doubles, posting an on-base percentage of .479 in 61 games.
He closed the year with a 22-game hitting streak and went 8-for-14 in the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament, finishing with two home runs and two doubles in his final college showcase.
Over the weekend, veteran baseball analyst Jim Callis of MLB.com published his updated 2025 MLB mock draft. Callis has Cannarella going to the New York Mets with the No. 38 overall selection as a supplemental first-round pick.
A recent mock draft last week by USA TODAY Sports had Cannarella going slightly higher at No. 30 overall to the Baltimore Orioles.
In three years at Clemson for coach Erik Bakich, Cannarella batted .360 with 23 home runs, 54 doubles and a combined 1.004 OPS. In the field, he made a memorable Willie Mays-styled catch in the 2023 Clemson Super Regional in front of a national audience watching on ESPN.
Clemson has had 20 players taken in the first round of an MLB draft dating back to 1968. Infielder Logan Davidson was the last Tigers player selected in the first round and was the No. 29 overall by the Athletics in 2019.
The first round of the 2025 MLB draft will be televised on ESPN, with subsequent rounds broadcast and streamed on MLB Network. The draft will feature 20 rounds over two days.

Mets Announce Pete Alonso, Juan Soto News After Third Straight Loss

Mets Announce Pete Alonso, Juan Soto News After Third Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Mets are looking to rebound from their first series sweep of the season after dropping the latest set against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite two strong shutout performances from the pitching staff earlier in the week, New York struggled to maintain consistency, and the offense seemed out of sync at the plate. Advertisement Right fielder Juan Soto and first baseman Pete Alonso both cooled off during the series, combining for just three hits over the three games. Soto, in particular, struck out multiple times in key moments, and Alonso's power was noticeably absent. However, despite the weekend's struggles, both players have fueled New York's success in recent weeks. Mets right fielder Juan Soto (22) celebrates with first baseman Pete Carchietta-Imagn Images On Monday, the Mets celebrated a shining moment: Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto all emerged as frontrunners in the initial All-Star ballot returns. Lindor leads his respective position, but Alonso and Soto each trail at least one other player. The team took to social media to capture their excitement about the news: Advertisement "ALL-STAR BALLOT UPDATE Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto are amongst the leaders for their positions!" the Mets announced on X. Throughout the 2025 season, Alonso has been elite. He's hit 17 home runs and leads the National League with 63 RBIs, and is on his way to potentially earning his fourth All-Star appearance. Soto has also shown flashes of his MVP-caliber form, reaching 13 home runs and 36 RBIs this campaign. With Monday off, the Mets will turn their sights to a big Tuesday matchup in Atlanta against the Braves. They'll look to regain form and recapture their offensive rhythm—leaning on their All-Star trio to lead the way. Red-Hot Tampa Bay Rays Soaring Into Series With Orioles

Red-Hot Tampa Bay Rays Soaring Into Series With Orioles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Forget all that talk about the struggling Tampa Bay Rays. They are not even close to struggling right now, winning 18 of their last 24 games. Tampa Bay is coming off an impressive three-game sweep of the New York Mets at Citi Field. Advertisement With this surge, it's no wonder that Rays manager Kevin Cash is extremely pleased with his team's performance. Shane Baz provided a huge boost to the Rays' bullpen, working deep into a 9-0 win on Sunday against the Mets. 'We are playing good baseball. I'm very encouraged by the way we played - offense, defense and pitching,' Cash said after Sunday's win, reported. 'To do that against this quality Mets team, everything has to go right like it did for the most part.' Tampa Bay Rays dominated New York Mets with solid starting pitching, clutch hitting Tampa Bay jumped on Mets pitchers all game long, eventually getting a six-run lead in the fifth inning. Jonathan Aranda's double down the right-field line scored Josh Lowe and Junior Caminero. But Caminero had a little Father's Day love to send out to his father, who was watching from the Citi Field stands. Caminero slammed a three-run homer in the ninth inning, putting a cap on an excellent weekend in New York. Advertisement Cash understands that his team is still looking up at the New York Yankees, who sit in first place in the American League East Division. He knows that there is still a lot of work to do before even talking about postseason play. 'The Yankees are a very good team, but we have to control what we can and that's kind of staying series to series," Cash said. "We did a good job of resetting after the Red Sox series to come to [Citi Field] after the off-day and play well. Now we have to go home and do that in the Orioles series.' The Baltimore Orioles come to George M. Steinbrenner Field on Monday night to start a three-game series against the Rays. Red Sox Urged to Trade for Brewers' Rhys Hoskins ‘Right Now' Amid Rafael Devers Trade

Red Sox Urged to Trade for Brewers' Rhys Hoskins 'Right Now' Amid Rafael Devers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After the Boston Red Sox traded away superstar designated hitter Rafael Devers, there are a lot of questions left for the Red Sox front office. With the team sitting above .500 and in range of a Wild Card spot, the team shouldn't be in rebuild or selling mode. They should instead be trying to acquire MLB talent to contribute to a postseason run. Advertisement With all of the money freed up from the Devers trade, there are plenty of paths Craig Breslow and the front office can take. One MLB executive believes they should swing a deal for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins. According to an article from Mark Feinsand of a National League MLB executive urged the Red Sox to acquire Hoskins to shift the narrative on the Devers deal. "'What the general public never factors in their knee-jerk trade reactions in what the teams trading away the large contract can now go do with those dollars,' and an NL executive said," Feinsand reported. "Boston should go and trade for someone like [Brewers first baseman] Rhys Hoskins right now. Then the deal takes on a whole new dimension." Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins (12) hits a single in the fourth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Stratman-Imagn Images If Boston did use some of the money on Hoskins, while it wouldn't negate the negative feelings from the fanbase over that decision, it would help soften the blow of losing the final player from the 2018 World Series squad. Advertisement Hoskins is currently under contract for $18 million in 2025 and has a mutual option of $18 million for the 2026 season. The Red Sox could offer an extension and move off Triston Casas permanently, or they could use him for just one year, and let Hoskins walk after the 2025 season for a new payday. Whatever the Red Sox could do with Hoskins, they'd be getting a great slugging hitter on their roster. In 2025, Hoskins had 56 hits, 23 runs scored, nine doubles, 10 home runs, 37 RBIs, 30 walks, and 73 strikeouts in 229 at-bats. The Brewers' slugging first baseman is a player the Red Sox need, and he's also likely to become available if the Brewers begin to lose games in the build-up to the MLB trade deadline. From the perspective of an MLB executive, adding someone like Hoskins with the freed-up money from the Devers trade should be something the Red Sox do "right now." Not only would it add offensive firepower, but it'd also help justify the deal and help round out a roster with plenty of question marks following Devers' departure.
