Speed up urban civic works ahead of monsoon: Andhra Minister
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar, Director Sampath Kumar, Swachhandhra Corporation MD Anil Kumar Reddy, and several Commissioners.
Emphasising monsoon preparedness, Narayana urged officials to complete drain desilting works to prevent flooding and avoid accidents caused by overflowing open drains.
He also instructed them to ensure uninterrupted supply of drinking water in urban areas until the monsoon.
Expressing concern over the rising street dog population, the MAUD Minister stressed the need to intensify Animal Birth Control (ABC) operations to ensure public safety.
To strengthen urban infrastructure, Narayana called for the swift issuance of Transferable Development Rights (TDR) bonds in Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Guntur.
Highlighting revenue generation, he directed municipal bodies to intensify property and other tax collections. Additionally, he urged frequent inspections of Anna Canteens to maintain quality of food and hygiene.
The MAUD Minister suggested implementing Chandigarh's greenery model of planting trees along city roads.

HMWSSB launches ‘Dial-a-Septic-Tank' service for safe waste disposal around ORR
HYDERABAD: The HMWSSB has launched the 'Dial-a-Septic-Tank' programme to manage and clean septic tank waste in areas under the Outer Ring Road (ORR). In collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), the Water Board selected 50 septic tank vehicle operators for the safe transportation and disposal of waste at existing STPs and FSTPs. The operators were trained in scientific waste management practices and equipped with safety gear and uniforms. The initiative covers 18 villages, seven municipal corporations and 18 municipalities around the ORR. It aims to ensure safe disposal of human waste without harming public health or the environment. All vehicles are GPS-enabled for real-time monitoring. Residents can call 155313 or 14420 to book septic tank cleaning services. Presentation on GHMC's best practices for JDA delegation A delegation from the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA), led by commissioner Anandhi, visited the GHMC head office on Thursday as part of a tour. According to officials, the visit is aimed at understanding GHMC's best practices. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan gave a detailed presentation to the visiting team, outlining key reforms such as the online TDR processing system, salient features of the 2017 TDR policy, and the single-window Build Now system for building and layout approvals. He said the TDR policy, in particular, has facilitated easier land acquisition for public projects.

Guntur bags national award as Super Swachh League City under Swachh Bharat Mission
GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has secured a national award under the Super Swachh League Cities 2024–25 as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award at the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday. Municipal Administration and Urban development (MAUD) Minister Narayana, Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K Pattabhiram, and Guntur Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra received the award on behalf of the city. Mayor Ravindra and GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu congratulated Guntur's health workers, officials, elected representatives, and residents for their collective role in achieving the recognition, which they termed as a proud moment for the corporation. To commemorate Swachh Bharat Mission's 10th anniversary, the Union government identified 23 cities with sustained high performance as Super Swachh League Cities. Guntur stood out among cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakh. They noted that Guntur earned a 5-star rating and ODF++ (Open Defecation Free Plus Plus) status. Inspired by this recognition, the GMC will intensify efforts in source-level waste segregation, enforce the ban on single-use plastics, and expand public awareness campaigns.

Admissions rise in welfare hostels with improved facilities in Andhra
NELLORE: Welfare hostels across Nellore district are witnessing a significant rise in student admissions for the 2025–26 academic year, attributed to improved infrastructure, quality education, and proactive administrative efforts. Nellore District Collector O Anand stated that the hostels are now better equipped to serve students from economically weaker sections with nutritious meals, hygienic conditions, and enhanced academic support. The State government has allocated substantial funds for renovations and infrastructure development. Minor repair works in 30 hostels were completed with an allocation of Rs 78 lakh, while Swachh Andhra Corporation sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the construction of 69 toilets in 10 hostels, currently underway. The Backward Classes Welfare Department operates 63 pre-matric and 16 post-matric hostels in the district. This year, 4,120 students have enrolled, 2,373 renewals and 1,654 new admissions, marking an increase of over 550 students from last year. Students are provided with free uniforms, notebooks. Sanitation is prioritised, and academic progress is monit o r e d thr oug h weekly assessments under the 'Chaduvudam Ishtanga' initiative, categorising students into A, B, and C groups. The Social Welfare Department manages 71 hostels, 41 for boys and 30 for girls. Essential repairs have been completed with a budget of Rs 932.10 lakh to enhance living conditions. Apart from academic supplies, students received notebooks, and recreational materials. Collector Anand encouraged parents to enrol their children in government hostels to benefit from the State's comprehensive welfare initiatives.
