Golden Reel Awards: MPSE bans generative A.I. sound from awards eligibility to ‘keep artists at the forefront'

Yahoo12-06-2025
The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) are taking a definitive stance: The Golden Reel Awards will honor only human artistic achievement. In a world where Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is rapidly infiltrating creative industries, the MPSE is taking proactive steps to preserve the integrity and humanity of sound editorial, design, and foley artistry.
In a press release issued Thursday, MPSE president David Barber stated, "It is an enormous question to ask: how much of our humanity are we willing to give away to technology, especially in the arts? The time to ponder that question, set up boundaries, and guide how A.I. is assimilated into our workflow and lives was yesterday. The dam of A.I. has broken, and the waters are upon us. Choosing what we embrace as award-worthy filmmaking is a way of diverting those waters while we grapple with this exponential change. As A.I. technology infiltrates and permeates our industry, rules and accepted practices for its use need to emerge that keep artists at the forefront."

The press release further stated:
MPSE has always promoted and will continue to value the human endeavor of artistic creation. Our Golden Reel Award honors people who utilize their skills and artistry to push the boundaries of storytelling through sound. We support and prize technological advances that assist artists in their creations. However, standards for the legal and ethical use of Generative A.I. have yet to be established and are far from being accepted broadly. What we choose to promote as award-worthy points to how much we value the human endeavor of artistic creation.
Because of these concerns and our organization's mission to uphold and celebrate the creative human endeavor of sound and music editorial, sound design, and Foley artistry, the MPSE will not be accepting projects for awards consideration where Generative A.I. is used to create elements for the final soundtrack. Golden Reel Award qualification rules are being updated and will be published on our website soon.
As the industry evolves to adopt tools and techniques, current or yet to be developed, our board of directors and A.I. committee are poised to evolve our stance on this issue, ensuring we adhere to our mission. We remain open to what the technological future may bring in support of the humans working in the craft of sound editorial.
The 73rd Annual Golden Reel Awards will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, in Los Angeles.

‘Brutal' Meghan Accused of ‘Vicious, Nasty Move' Toward Kate as Harry & William's Relationship Takes an Unexpected Turn

People have always been interested in the relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. This preceded the feud between Prince William and Prince Harry, but in the past few years, as the relationship between the brothers deteriorated, people have been even more invested in how the two wives get along, if they get along at all. And now some are taking a business decision on the part of Markle as an attack on Middleton. talked to royal expert Hugo Vickers, who criticized the fact that Markle will release a holiday special this December on Netflix, something that is said to clash with Kate Middleton's annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. More from StyleCaster Kate Delivers Emotional Statement With William a Day After Their Serious Health Alert Serious Health Alert Issued Weeks After Kate Revealed She Still Can't 'Function Normally' Post-Cancer Related: Did William really cheat on Kate? 'It's always said that whenever Catherine, the Princess of Wales, starts something, Meghan Markle does something else to cap it, or in some ways clash with it,' Vickers said. Another source told the outlet, 'This is just the type of vicious, nasty move that is coming to define Meghan.' Vickers referred to the move as 'brutal,' adding. 'Obviously, the initiative of the Princess of Wales at Westminster Abbey is incredibly moving and incredibly special, and is done for the benefit of the rest of the world, for all the people who've been suffering, all the people who've helped with charities, all that sort of thing, so it's all for the public good,' he said, claiming Markle's holiday special isn't anywhere near the same. This all comes after recent reports regarding the brothers have been contradictory, to say the least. The Daily Beast reported that, according to a friend of William, 'He absolutely f—ing hates' Harry. That same source added, 'William will never, ever forgive Harry for what he has done. Charles is the king; he can do what he likes. But make no mistake: William believes with every fiber of his being that giving Harry and Meghan back any royal imprimatur is a huge mistake.' Recent reports also indicated William and Kate's friends refer to Markle's brand, As Ever, by a shady nickname, 'As If,' though there was no clarification about whether Prince William and Kate Middleton also used the nickname. Similarly, Kate Middleton's longtime right-hand woman, Natasha Archer, unfollowed Meghan Markle and her company after departing Kensington Palace, which was seen as a sign that the relationship between the two women isn't great. But there's also reportedly one thing that could bring the brothers closer together: the fact that their father, King Charles, is reportedly not doing well. A source told Parade that 'King Charles really isn't doing well,' adding that his health has been 'deteriorating more.' And that might just be the thing that pushes the brothers to finally put everything else aside and reconcile. 'It wouldn't be surprising if William and Harry reconnected a bit more over this,' the source added. 'This could be the thing that pushes it to happen.' So, while it seems the relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle is strained at the moment, if their husbands reconcile, the two will probably be in each other's orbit again and that means they will likely make a point of, if not being friends, at least getting along. Will 'With Love, Meghan 'Get a Season 3? What We Know About the Future of Meghan Markle's Netflix Show

NEED TO KNOW Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have extended their Netflix deal to produce more new film and television projects The news came shortly before the release of season two of the Duchess of Sussex's lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan The couple's announcement included the confirmation of a With Love, Meghan holiday special, but the future of the series remains unknown Meghan Markle just dropped the trailer for the second season of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, giving fans a look at the star-studded upcoming episodes of her food and lifestyle show. The release comes on the heels of the news that Meghan and Prince Harry have struck a new deal with Netflix for future film and television projects. On Aug. 11, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would be extending their creative partnership with the streamer through their Archewell Productions with a multi-year, first-look deal. 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand," Meghan, 44, said in a statement. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision.' The update comes after it was widely reported in July that Harry and Meghan's initial five-year, $100 million deal with Netflix would not be renewed when it expires in September. In addition to the deal, the announcement came with the news of a With Love, Meghan holiday special, set to premiere in December. However, there's been no news yet about the possibility of future seasons of With Love, Meghan. Season two was announced shortly after With Love, Meghan premiered its debut season in March. The second season of the lifestyle show had already been filmed, with Michael Steed back as director. Netflix is also a partner with Meghan's lifestyle brand, As ever, and many of the products are featured on With Love, Meghan. Netflix's CEO, Ted Sarandos, recently said, "We're a passive partner in Meghan's company, and it's a big discovery model for us right now." The Duchess of Sussex told Inc that she was "building out a very different business plan" until she met with Josh Simon, Netflix's vice president of consumer products. "The reach from Netflix, coupled with my vision for the brand, felt like it was going to be a really perfect match," she said in the interview. She added, "They have tremendous experience on licensing deals and turning brands and shows into really good products, like Bridgerton,' referring to Shonda Rimes' royal-inspired series, which has expanded off-screen into fan experiences, concerts and more. It's also possible that Meghan will be turning her focus to other projects. The couple's Netflix press release about their latest deal included an announcement about a new documentary project, Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within. "In the heart of Uganda's Masaka region, where the shadows of the HIV/AIDS crisis linger, a small orphanage becomes a beacon of hope. Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within goes beyond the viral videos to reveal a vibrant, one-of-a-kind community where orphaned children transform hardship into joy, dancing their way toward healing, belonging, and the promise of a brighter future," said the release. Additionally, Harry and Meghan confirmed that their adaptation of Carley Fortune's bestselling novel Meet Me at the Lake is still in the works. "Archewell Productions is in active development on additional projects with Netflix that span a variety of content genres, including the feature adaptation of the bestselling novel by Carley Fortune, Meet Me At The Lake. This romantic drama follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise," the release stated. Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, said in a statement: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. The response to their work speaks for itself — Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series." "More recently, fans have been inspired by With Love, Meghan, with products from the new As ever line consistently selling out in record time. We're excited to continue our partnership with Archewell Productions and to entertain our members together.' Read the original article on People

Disney's Got a Cool ‘Andor' Zine for Emmy Season

With less than a month to go before the Emmys, Disney's pulling out all the stops to make sure Andor takes home some gold. Not only did it recently release the script for 'Welcome to the Rebellion,' one of its best season two episodes, it's also getting the word out through the power of the press. As Disney describes it, the REBELIÓN zine celebrates 'our 14 Emmy® nominations, the filmmakers, talent, and incredible craftspeople who were responsible for bringing this show to life,' and has already been sent out to press and voters. Per a now-deleted tweet, Los Angeles residents can pick up a copy at locations like Atwater Village's Secret Headquarters, Echo Park's Stories and Heavy Manners Zine Library, while everyone else can peep the digital version here. Within its pages are the pitch of Andor's second season, propaganda posters featuring Cassian, Mon Mothma, and the Ghor, shots of key Empire characters, and concept art for the season. Showrunner Tony Gilroy also recently appeared at a pop-up event at West Hollywood's Kiosk-O-Thèque, which you can see below. Anyone looking to understand the show on a writing level is out of luck, since Gilroy previously said there's no plans to publish the series' full scripts as a means of safeguarding the show against generative AI. Too bad this is physical version isn't for everyone. The Emmys will air on Sunday, September 14, where we'll see if Andor takes home any gold for its last season. Want more io9 news?
