Rescued Morecambe hire first Sikh manager in British pro football

LONDON: Morecambe appointed Ashvir Singh Johal as the first Sikh to manage a professional British club on Tuesday just days after the financially-stricken club was rescued by a takeover.
The Shrimps, who play in the fifth-tier of English football, were taken over by investment group Panjab Warriors on Sunday, ending uncertainty over their future.
Within hours of taking charge, the new owners sacked manager Derek Adams on Monday.
At just 30, Ashvir also becomes the youngest manager in the top five tiers of English football.
Despite having never previously managed at senior level, he previously worked under Kolo Toure at Wigan and as an assistant to Cesc Fabregas during his time with the youth team at Italian side Como.
"I have been fortunate to work and learn from some incredible people, and I'm especially grateful to Kolo and Cesc," Ashvir told the BBC earlier this year.
"I know what world-class standards look like, how to lead with clarity, and how to develop a team with a real identity."

Sibu tourism students gain industry insights through practical training

Students pose with Wong (seated, third left) after the Tour Guiding In Action: Tips & Real Experience programme. SARIKEI (Aug 21): The Sibu branch of Sarikei Community College recently organised a programme titled 'Tour Guiding in Action: Tips & Real Experience' to provide students with valuable exposure to the tourism industry. College director Norasmah Jaafar said the session was conducted by licensed tourist guide and Industry Visiting Lecturer Wong Ing Hoo, and was specially designed for students of the SPL30203 – Tour Guiding course. 'This programme equips students with added-value knowledge directly from an industry practitioner,' Norasmah said. During the session, Wong shared practical tips and real-life experiences in the field, highlighting challenges faced by the tourism industry and stressing the importance of professionalism in building a career as a tourist guide. He also emphasised the need for English proficiency, cultural knowledge, tourist safety, and strong work ethics. Norasmah noted that direct engagement with Wong had enriched the learning process, making it more meaningful for students. She added that the PPI programme reflects the college's commitment to linking students with real industry experiences, in line with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) aspiration to produce graduates who are relevant and work-ready. 'We believe such early exposure helps students better understand theoretical concepts while building self-confidence and the soft skills required to serve in the tourism sector,' she said. She also noted that this initiative benefits the local tourism industry, as students learn directly from experienced practitioners. This contributes to the development of a competent workforce to support tourism growth in Sarawak, particularly in Sibu, Sarikei, and nearby destinations. Sarikei Community College Sibu tourism

Jackson to miss West Ham match as Chelsea await possible transfer

LONDON: Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson will sit out tomorrow's Premier League trip to West Ham United despite being available pending a possible transfer, head coach Enzo Maresca said today. The 24-year-old Senegal international has been linked with Aston Villa, a move that would reunite the player with Unai Emery, his former manager at Spanish side Villarreal. "He is available, but he's not going to be part of the squad," Maresca told reporters. "We have two strikers, we have two players in that position and also we know that something can happen before the transfer window closes." Maresca said he was focused on preparations for the game at the London Stadium and did not know how close a move for Jackson might be. The Premier League transfer window closes on Sept 1. The Italian said France forward Christopher Nkunku was in the same situation as Jackson while Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell were training apart "waiting for some solution." Media reports have linked Nkunku, 27, with a move to Bayern Munich and his previous club RB Leipzig. Both Nkunku and Jackson have fallen out of favour with Chelsea signing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap earlier in the summer window. Chelsea are looking for an internal replacement for defender Levi Colwill, who could miss most of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Maresca said centre back Wesley Fofana was happy at the club amid speculation he might no longer be part of the manager's future plans after references to Chelsea were removed from the player's Instagram account. "I speak with Wes every day. He's very, very happy, first of all because he's back from injury. He's joining all the sessions," said the boss. "As I said after the Palace game, he was on the bench just to be with us. But from tomorrow, he is with us and can also get some minutes. We are happy and he is happy."
