Penang police investigate mother and daughter's deaths, autopsy shows bodies decomposed for over a week
Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said this was based on the post-mortem report conducted on the two yesterday.
'The autopsy results found that both have been dead for over a week and there was no evidence of foul play.
'The doctor was also unable to determine the cause of death because the bodies were already badly decomposed,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Media reports said the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her two-year-old toddler were found in a state of decomposition in an apartment on Jalan Bukit Gambir in Bayan Lepas here following complaints of a foul smell from the public.
Police confirmed that there were no injuries or wounds on the remains of the woman and her daughter based on the autopsy at the Penang Hospital's (HPP) Forensic Department yesterday morning.
Internal examination showed decay of internal organs and no suspicious injuries and in this regard, the police classification of the case remains as sudden death. — Bernama

BESUT, July 3 – The boat operator involved in last Saturday's capsizing incident that claimed the lives of three tourists off Perhentian Island has pleaded guilty to drug abuse at the Magistrates' Court here today. Kosmo! reported that the accused, Azrie Yazid, 22, entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Nurliyana Md. Zukri. According to the charge, Azrie was accused of having ingested the drug Nimetazepam — a strong prescription medicine that helps people fall asleep and relax by calming the brain and muscles, but can be addictive. The offence was allegedly committed at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division office of the Besut District Police Headquarters at 10.05am on 29 June. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both upon conviction. The court granted Azrie bail of RM2,500 with one surety. The case has been set for mention on 4 September to allow for the pathology report to be submitted. In the 10.30pm incident on Saturday, S. Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V. Vennpani, tragically lost their lives. Two others were injured, while 10 passengers survived the tragedy. All the boat passengers, aged between three and 40, were returning from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner, when their boat was suddenly struck by large waves, causing it to capsize. Bernama reported that Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad@Abu confirmed that the boat skipper tested positive for drugs and has five prior records related to drug offences.

Cops suspect gang link in Penang school drive-by shooting but victim denies knowing gunmen
SEBERANG PERAI, July 3 — A man who escaped unhurt in a shooting incident on Tuesday had reclined his seat when he saw a motorcycle heading towards his vehicle, said Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the man had already reclined his seat halfway while waiting to pick up his child in his four-wheel drive outside a primary school in Sungai Nyior. 'The man said he saw a motorcycle speeding towards his vehicle and immediately reclined the seat until it was fully flat. 'That's when the two suspects on the motorcycle opened fire, but the bullets missed him,' he said. 'Police are currently conducting further investigations, and we do not rule out the possibility that the victim knew the two men who shot at his vehicle, even though he denies it,' Mohd Alwi said when met at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Batu Kawan Market at Bandar Cassia. He said the man, in his 40s, is a businessman with four prior criminal records. Police are also not ruling out links to gangsterism. Initial investigations revealed that the man was previously a gang member but is no longer involved in such activities, he said. 'We have formed a task force to carry out a detailed investigation into the case, including efforts to track down the two men who fired the shots,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Mohd Alwi assured the public that although the incident took place in front of a school, the situation remains under control. 'We have increased security measures,' he said. In the 5.40pm incident on Tuesday, two suspects on a motorcycle fired five shots at the man's front window while he was waiting for his child outside SK Sungai Nyior. The man was not injured.

Father denies neglecting autistic son and blind daughter at Shah Alam home
SHAH ALAM, July 3 — An accountant pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to charges of leaving his two biological children, one who is visually impaired and the other, with mild autism, without reasonable supervision. Thaha Abdul Latef, 39, made the plea after the charges were read out before Judge Norazlin Othman. On the first count, he is charged as the father of a 10-year-old boy, who has mild autism, to have left the child in a house in Elmina Valley, Section U16, Shah Alam, on March 15, without making any arrangements for his proper care and supervision. He is also charged with committing a similar offence on his visually impaired 12-year-old daughter at the same place and date. The charges were framed under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years or both upon conviction. He was allowed bail of RM10,000 and ordered to report to a nearby police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court, which then set Sept 4 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal prosecuted, while lawyer Mohd Redzuan Mohamed Yusoff represented the accused. — Bernama
