Vijayawada: Fear looms large among residents living along the Budameru rivulet in Vijayawada and neighbouring suburbs, as no tangible work was completed to prevent Budameru from entering the residential colonies abutting the stream—even nine months after record floods ravaged the area and submerged half of Vijayawada for more than a fortnight last September.
On September 1, 2024, floodwater from Budameru, following record rains and subsequent breaches in its bund at three locations, entered houses, submerging many colonies and areas including Jakkampudi YSR Colony, Ajith Singh Nagar, and New and Old Rajarajeshwari Pet in the Vijayawada Central and West constituencies. This forced residents living on the ground and first floors to abandon their belongings and vacate their houses, relocating to relief centres for nearly 15 days.
Acting on a war footing, state govt filled the three breaches and assured the construction of a retaining (flood protection) wall along the Budameru stream to protect residents living nearby. However, govt has taken up the retaining wall construction only at the three breach locations, contrary to its promise of constructing a wall along the entire stretch of the stream. A deadline of June 10 was set to complete the wall construction works at those three locations.
CPM state secretariat member Ch Babu Rao accused the TDP-led NDA govt of neglecting the safety and security of the people and the city, turning a blind eye to the promises made during last year's floods regarding full-length flood protection along the Budameru.
"It is estimated that 600 crore would be required to complete the construction of the flood protection wall. However, a mere 30-40 crore was sanctioned. Despite the havoc caused by last year's Budameru floods, govt has no concrete plan of action, such as creating an alternate flood channel to divert Budameru into the Krishna river or expanding the existing diversion channel to enhance its flood-carrying capacity," Babu Rao remarked.
It is understood that govt is currently focusing on the faster execution of flood protection walls at the three breach points, with plans to take up full-scale construction of the flood protection wall in the coming days.
The Budameru bund has developed fresh cracks on the south side between Velpuru and Uppaluru in Kankipadu Mandal of Krishna district. Farmers in the region have raised concerns over water seepage from these cracks, which could potentially inundate agricultural fields in Velpuru, Uppaluru, Manthena, and Tenneru villages in Kankipadu mandal.

Will work to make Yamuna as clean as Ganga: Delhi CM Gupta in Haridwar

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday visited Haridwar and took a dip in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri ghat, where she promised to 'clean up the Yamuna' and work towards a 'developed Delhi.' Along with her family, the chief minister is on a two-day trip to Uttarakhand after completing 100 days in office. 'Taking blessings from Maa Ganga, we will work to make Maa Yamuna clean and beautiful. We will serve Yamuna to make it clean. We will work to speed up the development of Delhi. Taking the blessings of Maa, I feel very satisfied that as the chief minister of Delhi, I will be able to do better work for Delhi,' she said. Later in the day, Gupta and Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the inauguration of Vatsalya Ganga Ashray, a dharamshala, at Kankhal. Hours after taking a dip in the river, Gupta on Sunday reiterated that her government was continuously working towards cleaning the Yamuna river. Gupta said, 'Yesterday, we did the aarti of Yamuna ji in Delhi and today, I took a bath in Ganga ji. Today, I want the blessings of all the saints sitting on this stage that one day we will be able to take a bath in Yamuna ji. Yamuna is dry; there is no water in it, and the water that is there is very dirty. I have to work continuously to achieve this goal of cleaning the Yamuna River.' CM Gupta said that she was a 'junior CM' compared to Dhami and that she would continue to seek his guidance. 'Keep guiding he passes (policy) here, we will also implement it in Delhi. Gangotri and Yamunotri both flow from here. We will take water for Yamuna ji as well as schemes for it.' On the second day of the trip, Gupta is likely to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath. CM Dhami said that Gupta has been working in the political and social sector for a long time. 'She made a resolution here that she will make Yamuna ji just like Ganga ji. Tomorrow, her visit to Kedarnath and Badrinath Dhaam is scheduled. I wish all the wishes of the people of Delhi can be fulfilled during her tenure.' Cleaning the Yamuna river was a major poll promise and a key priority of the BJP-led government in Delhi. At the event marking 100 days of the government at JLN stadium on Saturday, Gupta said the Arvind Kejriwal-led party merely put up a show under the guise of cleaning the river, while untreated sewage continued to be discharged into it. The BJP-led government, on the other hand, made a ₹9,000 crore allocation to the Delhi Jal Board budget to strengthen sewerage system and water supply infrastructure, install seven new sewage treatment plants, rehabilitate eight more STPs, and launch decentralised STPs.

Firm and focused leadership keeps India on course

Chain ki zindagi jio, roti khao; warna meri goli to hai hi." (Live peacefully, eat your bread; else you face my bullets). These words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, broadcast live from the border district Bhuj, went viral globally. His detractors may insist these sound like a punchline from a film, but messages such as this one fill a large section of Indians with pride. Was it a coincidence that it was the day Modi completed 11 years as PM of India? He completes the first year of his third term next week. Also read: This may be the nail in the coffin of Maoist menace On 9 June last year, when Modi assumed office, his opponents felt a golden opportunity was just around the corner to snatch power from the BJP as that party lacked an absolute majority on its own. A year later, that idea seems hollow and distant. Consider the Waqf bill. Despite reluctance from NDA allies, the Janata Dal-United (JD(U)) and Telugu Desam Party, BJP neither backed down nor toned down its aggressive stance. Modi has crafted his communication and administrative style assiduously. In all his years in power since 2001, he has kept using a language that establishes him as a straight-shooting, strong leader among his voters. Traditionalists may frown upon his style, but in a democracy, voters decide what's acceptable or not. What can be a bigger stamp of approval than that Modi hasn't lost a single election to date? But Modi doesn't succeed merely through self-projection. As a Prime Minister, he has convinced citizens that he is committed to their welfare round the clock by initiating landmark moves such as the world's largest food distribution scheme, a phenomenally expanded road and railway network, the indigenization of armament production, Gati Shakti and Ayushman schemes. Also read: The many dangers that democracy confronts today Modi has his own 'theory" to cut slack in governance. While working as an RSS pracharak and later as a BJP functionary, he always felt there was a serious lack of coordination between the organization, government and the bureaucracy. In the wake of the Bhuj earthquake of 26 January 2001, there was widespread destruction and chaos. Realizing that things were getting out of hand, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then home minister L.K. Advani made Modi, a party veteran with vast experience working in the state, the chief minister of Gujarat. Till then, Modi wasn't even a legislator and had no experience in governance. Yet his priorities and focus were clear. He devoted his energies on rebuilding and rehabilitating the devastated areas. Resources were summoned, the distracted and dissipated energies of the state bureaucracy were channelled, and the victims of the tragedy were taken on board. If you visit Dholavira, 136km from the district headquarters of Bhuj, you will find tarred roads amid white sands of the desert, tanks for water supply, schools and electricity poles. Even in the remote desert areas of Kutch, soldiers are provided with tap water. Once it was considered impossible. He brought the same work culture to the seat of the central government in the South and North Blocks. Before him, the regional leaders would try to mould themselves to the standards of urbanity and etiquette set by the British-influenced Lutyens' Delhi elite. Modi was a stark contrast, presenting himself as a symbol of Indianness and has been steadfast in his approach. Modi's style connects with Indians and creates a unique persona internationally. Here, a question arises: Didn't former prime ministers do any good? They definitely did, but never has the country been enamoured of a leader for so long. The reason? Modi knows it's imperative to show a report card to the citizens periodically to maintain their morale. Many of his promises and initiatives have drawn much criticism. He's accused of many other things, too, but in a democracy, there's no harm if development and debate coexist. Also read: A nation falling for the lure of majoritarianism Recently a news appeared that India became the fourth largest economy in the world, leaving Japan behind; now it has to go past Germany to become the third largest economy. Some experts think that it would take some more time before we go past Japan's economy, but does this nitpicking matter? A Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report published later suggests we would remain one of the fastest growing large economies in the world. It's clear that India's development story is on course despite many challenges, and we can't deny Narendra Modi's role in it. Shashi Shekhar is editor-in-chief, Hindustan. Views are personal.

Jagan Mohan Reddy objects to supply of ration goods through fair price shops

YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has opposed the government's decision to supply ration through the fair price (FP) shops instead of mobile dispensing units (MDU). In a post on X on Sunday, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said the government's decision would create hardship to the poor. 'The government is pushing onto the road nearly 20,000 BC, SC, ST and minority people, who rely on the 9,260 MDUs introduced by the YSRCP government,' he said. The TDP had promised to pay ₹10,000 per month to the volunteers if it was voted to power. Soon after coming to power, the government withdrew their services. In the name of rationalisation, the government was acting with a vengeance against the village and ward secretariats. Village Clinics, family doctor services, and RBKs were weakened, he said. 'People are facing serious difficulties in getting government services. Due to this foolish move, their difficulties have increased further,' he alleged. Moreover, 20,000 employees who depended on these vehicles had been hit hard, he said. They were not shown any alternative, he added. In all, three lakh people, who included 2.6 lakh volunteers and those laid off in the AP Beverages Corporation and AP FibreNet, lost their jobs, he said. 'Only Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu can destroy so many families in a year of rule,' he added.
