‘The Last Of Us Part II' Just Got A Huge Update That Completely Changes How The Game Is Played

The Last Of Us Part II
One of my biggest criticisms of HBO's adaptation of The Last Of Us Part II, which is being adapted into multiple seasons of TV, is the way the show bungled the chronology. One Season 2 scene in particular was plucked from the very end of the video game and inserted in the penultimate episode of the second season, long before it takes place in the game. Elsewhere, we learn much earlier what Abby's motivations are, whereas gamers were blindsided by her actions in the game, and didn't learn what fueled her revenge until much later.
It appears that Naughty Dog wants a piece of this action. Sony revealed today that a new update for The Last Of Us Part II will allow players to blast their way through the game in chronological order. The free update takes the non-linearity of the game and untangles it so that players can play as Ellie and Abby chronologically. In the original game, you play as Ellie first and then the clock jumps back and you play as Abby. It's a really clever storytelling structure that forces you to examine a whole different side of the coin.
In the Chronological Update, all of this is removed. You jump back and forth between missions, playing as both characters as they hurtle towards one another.
'Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II's narrative," Naughty Dog informs us on the PlayStation Blog. "Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby's crisscrossing journeys. You'll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.
'It was no small feat to bring The Last of Us Part II's story chronologically together, given that Part II's story is so meticulously put together. We're grateful to the developers both at Naughty Dog and our partners at Nixxes to make the Chronological mode as smooth as possible. And while we of course recommend players still new to the game to play through Part II's story as was originally developed, the team's hard work has paid off with a fascinating new way to enjoy this chapter.'
While this is a pretty fascinating idea, and I'm certainly curious to see how (or whether) it works, it's hard not to shake your head at this point. This game and the original have both been released and re-released so many times at this point, a new update like this can start to feel like part of a running joke. The Last Of Us Complete released just a few months ago (with a physical Collector's Edition coming out this week). It's hard to see any new release – even a free update – without thinking about how much this franchise has been squeezed for every last penny.

Along with the update, which is out now on PS5 and PC, the game is getting new bug fixes and performance updates and two very familiar skins for brothers Joel and Tommy:

Yep, these are Nathan Drake and Sam Drake skins from Uncharted to celebrate Naughty Dog's 40th anniversary this year. I sure wish a new Uncharted game was in the works. C'est la vie.

Sony's PlayStation Sues Tencent Over Its ‘Slavish Clone' of ‘Horizon' Video Game Franchise

Sony's PlayStation is suing China-based video game giant Tencent over copyright and trademark infringement regarding the former's 'Horizon' franchise. Per a lawsuit filed July 25 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Sony Interactive Entertainment is alleging Tencent's upcoming game 'Light of Motiram' is a 'slavish clone' of the 'Horizon Zero Dawn' and 'Horizon Forbidden West' video games. Tencent's copying of Horizonis so blatant that the public has described it as 'crazy,' 'insane,' and 'shameless.' Tencent also used its rip-off of the iconic Horizon main character 'Aloy' as the centerpiece of its pre-release marketing and promotional strategy, deliberately causing numerous game lovers to confuse 'Light of Motiram' as the next game in the 'Horizon' series when encountering Tencent's promotional game play videos and social media accounts.' The lawsuit requests statutory damages of $150,000 for each separate work in the 'Horizon' franchise infringed or of 'SIE's actual damages sustained as a result of Defendants' acts of copyright infringement,' as well as other monetary damages. Representatives for both PlayStation and Tencent did not immediately respond to request for comment Monday. Tencent has not yet set a release date for 'Light of Motiram,' which it describes as follows: 'In a world overrun by colossal machines, explore the vast open world, build your base of operations, advance technology, train Mechanimals, and take on formidable bosses. Starting from the primitive age, forge a new path of development. Defy the machination, survive with mechanimals.' For comparison, here is PlayStation's description for 2017's 'Horizon Zero Dawn,' the first game in its 'Horizon' series: 'In a far future where colossal machines roam and rule the Earth, pockets of humanity survive in unique tribes among the lush, overgrown ruins of our long-lost civilization. Take up bow and spear as Aloy, a young machine hunter and outcast of her tribe, as she discovers her origins, the truth of this mysterious world, and her own destiny to save it from impending doom. Epic ‘Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything

Epic 'Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything originally appeared on Parade Pets. Dogs will get into literally anything if you let them. They have no reason to be doing all of that, but they do. It's so annoying, but it's hard to be too mad at the. They're just dogs, after all. They don't know better! Recently, there was one incident that definitely warranted being a little angry. When one Golden Retriever turned into a "glitter retriever" on mom's white bedding, her mom could hardly believe her eyes. She's very sparkly and beautiful, but this would totally send me over the edge: I hope Lexis Howard was able to take a step back and take a deep breath after this. There is no glitter allowed in my house for this very reason. Wishing her the best trying to get all of this out of her bed! This girl's name is Ellie, and this was certainly not her first offense. She loves to be as bad as possible whenever she can, and she always has. She's about a year and a half old: she was a birthday gift for their 9-year-old daughter. Since getting her, there certainly hasn't been a dull moment! Wait until Lexis realizes they haven't even gotten to the terrible twos yet... Ellie is a classic Golden Retriever puppy. She loves getting into trouble. Her favorite moves are grabbing something she doesn't need to have to try and play chase with it, digging in the yard, and eating everything in sight. Bonus point if she eats it on mom's white bedding! She particularly loves to victimize the couch cushions: Some people might think that Golden Retrievers are just the perfect dog. They can do no wrong. They're just perfect little angels... Right? Wrong. Incorrect in every possible way. Golden Retrievers are the sweetest little troublemakers you'll ever meet. They love to nip and get into things they shouldn't, and they're incredibly stubborn. These dogs will throw tantrums to get what they want, just like every other dog! Ellie is no exception. In fact, she might just be the brattiest Golden of all! 🐶🐾🐾 Epic 'Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything first appeared on Parade Pets on Jul 27, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade Pets on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared. Sydney Sweeney Is Facing A Backlash Over Her New American Eagle Campaign. Here's What People Are Saying

Sydney Sweeney's new collaboration with the fashion brand American Eagle has become the centre of a whole lot of debate. The Euphoria star unveiled a new campaign with the American clothing brand last week, to promote their line of denim last week. However, it didn't take long before social media clips to promote the deal sparked a wave of discomfort among many critics, largely due to some of the language that's used in the campaign. This is the story so far… What is Sydney Sweeney's new ad campaign for American Eagle all about? For American Eagle's autumn 2025 campaign, Sydney Sweeney can be seen sporting items from the brand's denim range, including a new pair of jeans inspired by her. The campaign also makes use of the slogan 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans', a pun on the term 'great genes'. In another, she explains: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour.' 'My jeans are blue,' she then quips, at which point a narrator delivers the line: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Why are some people upset about Sydney Sweeney's new ads for American Eagle? Unfortunately this repeated use of the slogan 'great jeans', a pun on 'great genes', has put some viewers in mind of the language used by white supremacists and eugenicists. By centring a blonde, white star in a campaign referencing 'genes', some critics are accusing the brand of tone-deafness at best – particularly in the current political climate – and deliberately pushing a white supremacist agenda at worst. HuffPost UK has contacted representatives for both Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle for comment. Others are pointing out that Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle campaign doesn't mention one other important aspect of the product American Eagle's new 'Sydney Jean' features a butterfly detail on its back pocket, in a nod to domestic violence awareness, a cause which the White Lotus star has championed throughout her career. In fact, an American Eagle press release confirmed that '100% of the purchase price from 'The Sydney Jean' will be donated to Crisis Text Line', a charity in the US which aims to help those affected by domestic violence. However, the ads are also being criticised for not highlighting this key part of the campaign, with some saying its accompanying slogan is even more jarring as a result. Has Sydney Sweeney or American Eagle said anything about the controversy?
