Al-Abdallat: Jordanian women's achievements reflect Hashemite leadership's vision
Ammon News - The Director of the Human Rights Unit at the Prime Minister's Office Khalil Al-Abdallat, marked International Women's Day by acknowledging the significant strides Jordanian women have made under the kingdom's visionary Hashemite leadership.
"On International Women's Day, we stand proudly before the achievements of Jordanian women, which are the fruit of the wise Hashemite leadership's vision and the commitment of His Majesty King Abdullah II and Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah to establishing women's role as essential partners in nation-building and enhancing their status across various fields," Al-Abdallat stated.
He noted that Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II continues to support young Jordanian women through innovative initiatives focused on skills development, encouraging innovation, and strengthening women's participation in technology, entrepreneurship, and the competitive job market.
Recent years have witnessed fundamental reforms enhancing women's status and rights, Al-Abdallat explained. The latest constitutional amendments reinforced principles of equality and non-discrimination while boosting women's participation in public and political life.
The comprehensive framework of political, economic, and public sector reforms has played a vital role in creating new opportunities for women and providing supportive environments for their participation in decision-making processes at both national and local levels.
The Jordanian government, following royal directives, has enacted progressive policies and legislation aimed at empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities.
These include strengthening women's representation in elected councils, launching economic programs supporting female-led entrepreneurial projects, and enhancing legal and social protections for women across sectors.
The past several years have also seen substantial amendments to labor laws aimed at improving the work environment for women, ensuring equal opportunities, and providing greater support for working mothers to enhance their economic and social stability.
Al-Abdallat emphasized the importance of maximizing women's roles across various sectors and strengthening their participation in political and parliamentary work.
He highlighted that specialized parliamentary committees play a key role in drafting legislation and policies supporting women's rights and ensuring their empowerment in decision-making positions.
He also underscored the pivotal role of the Jordanian National Committee for Women's Affairs in formulating national policies that promote women's rights and ensure the integration of their issues into development plans, contributing to a comprehensive approach that enhances women's standing in society.
"Economic empowerment of women is a fundamental step toward achieving sustainable development," Al-Abdallat said.
"Modern economic reforms provide greater opportunities for women in entrepreneurship and innovation. The government, in partnership with the private sector, has supported small and medium enterprises managed by women and provided training programs aimed at enhancing their ability to enter local and global markets, increasing their contribution to the national economy."
Al-Abdallat further highlighted Jordan's achievements in supporting refugee women, describing the kingdom as an exemplary model in providing protection and care under King Abdullah's leadership. He noted that Jordan continues to ensure refugee women's rights through health, educational, social services, and economic empowerment.
"Our vision for the future is based on building a state of law and institutions that guarantees the principles of equality, justice, and equity," Al-Abdallat concluded.

These include: A comprehensive cultural center An environmental park A new administrative building for the Bseira district A Civil Status and Passport Office in Al-Hasa Completion of the Tafila Model School and the Qadisiyah Boys' Elementary School The ministry is also currently executing several secondary projects across the governorate's districts. Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Projects 74,000 dinars allocated for road maintenance across the governorate, including asphalt removal, pothole patching, roadside cleaning, and culvert maintenance, with a completion period of 270 days. 238,000 dinars for rehabilitating the Qanan-Thawabiya Road, including gabion walls and obstacle removal, over 120 days. 253,000 dinars for improving secondary and agricultural roads in Ain Al-Bayda and Al-Hussein, involving road widening, asphalt layering, and safety enhancements, over 120 days. 299,000 dinars for paving the Jerf–Tafilah Road with similar rehabilitation measures. 437,000 dinars for upgrading the Silk Triangle–Aboor Road, including full roadbed preparation and modern lighting installations. 153,000 dinars to pave agricultural roads in Ain Al-Bayda and Al-Hussein, aiming to enhance access and support agricultural activity. 93,000 dinars for constructing a retaining wall near the Royal Highway in the Al-Rashideen/ Ain Al-Bayda area to ensure traffic sustainability. 136,000 dinars to pave a new service road along the Desert Highway in Al-Hasa to improve local connectivity. Although design studies have been completed, some challenges remain—such as delays in financial commitment documents and land zoning adjustments. Maharmeh emphasized that these projects align with the ministry's broader efforts to support sustainable development and improve the quality of life in Tafilah through the enhancement of healthcare, education, cultural, and recreational infrastructure. Ongoing Central Projects Improving the Tafila–Karak Road, from Abu Al-Banna to the security checkpoint, 17 km in length, with a budget of 1.9 million dinars, set to begin within weeks and expected to take 6 months. Maintenance work on the Royal Highway from Dlagha checkpoint to Ras Al-Naqab in Ma'an Governorate has been tendered and awarded for 370,000 dinars. These initiatives represent a significant investment in Tafilah's infrastructure and service networks, reinforcing the governorate's position on Jordan's national development map.

US to eventually reduce military bases in Syria to one

Six months after the ouster of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar Assad, the United States is steadily drawing down its presence as part of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), a military task force launched in 2014 to fight the Daesh group (IS). 'The reduction of our OIR engagement on a military basis is happening,' the US envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, said in an interview with Turkiye's NTV late on Monday. 'We've gone from eight bases to five to three. We'll eventually go to one.' But he admitted Syria still faced major security challenges under interim leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, whose Islamist-led coalition toppled Assad in December. Assad's ouster brought an end to Syria's bloody 14-year civil war, but the new authorities have struggled to contain recent bouts of sectarian violence. Barrack, who is also the US ambassador to Turkiye, called for the 'integration' of the country's ethnic and religious groups. 'It's very tribal still. It's very difficult to bring it together,' he said. But 'I think that will happen,' he added.
