Pro-Palestine protesters chant ‘from the river to the sea' at Cannes

Yahoo15-05-2025
Pro-Palestine demonstrators chanted 'from the river to the sea' as they staged a rally against 'genocide' at the Cannes film festival – despite a ban on political protests.
For the first time in almost 10 years, the festival is hosting an official Palestinian Pavilion. The pavilions serve as a base for filmmakers and producers to show off opportunities in their countries.
However, on Thursday, the site was used to host an event in which activists criticised what they described as Israel's 'genocide' in Gaza. It was held to coincide with the annual Nakba Day, which marks the expulsion of Palestinian Arabs from the region in 1948 and laments the founding of the state of Israel.
Speakers at the event railed against the 'ongoing atrocity' suffered by Palestinians and declared 'end this genocide', with one chanting 'from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free'.
International festival-goers, including British and American citizens, and some members of the press attended while wearing keffiyeh Palestinian scarves.
A Greek journalist tearfully called out 'free Palestine', while a South African delegate led chants of 'free, free Palestine'.
The event was billed as a gathering to 'remember lives shaped by genocide' and 'the people of Gaza, their martyred children, women and men'.
It was organised by the Palestine Film Institute, which is leading the Palestinian delegation in Cannes. The institute states on its website that there is a 'relentless genocide perpetrated against our people in Gaza'.
Film Workers for Palestine also helped with the organisation. The international group has characterised the current conflict in Gaza as a 'US-backed genocide', and has led calls for a boycott of Disney and Marvel over their 'whitewashing' of the violence.
Activists with the group have claimed on their website that the films Captain America: Brave New World and the recent Snow White remake were attempts 'to normalise anti-Palestinian racism and cover up Israel's ongoing carnage in Gaza'.
The Snow White film starred Gal Gadot, an Israeli actress, who the group branded a 'propagandist'.
The gathering took place on the seafront grounds of the Cannes film festival, despite rules prohibiting 'political, militant or electoral events or demonstrations'.
The ban was introduced for this year's festival to 'not to offend the participants' various sensitivities'.
Those who breach the rules run the risk of being thrown out of the festival, and each national pavilion is responsible for the events that it hosts.
A spokesman for the festival said it had 'this year... made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect.'
They added: 'The Festival de Cannes does not ban political expression. However, our focus must remain on the films and the creative teams presenting them.
'For this reason, we have a long-standing rule that prohibits any demonstrations or protests that have not been expressly authorised in advance.
'The Marche du Film hosts pavilions from a wide range of countries around the world. Each pavilion is managed autonomously by the institution it represents and bears full responsibility for the events and activities organised within its private spaces.'
The ban on political activity came after nearly 400 stars signed an open letter calling for the film industry to take a stand on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Actors including Australian Guy Pearce and British star Ralph Fiennes supported the call, which stated: 'We cannot remain silent while genocide is taking place in Gaza.'
The festival's jury president, Juliette Binoche, used her speech at its opening ceremony to touch on both the plight of Gaza's civilians and the Oct 7 massacre. Her remarks would have been signed off in advance.

‘KPop Demon Hunters' Outperforms Its Closest Rival By Four Times

KPop Demon Hunters, the Netflix animated epic about a group of crusading spirit stalkers is being watched nearly four times as much as its closest rival according to data from the streaming platform. Over the past week alone the surreal musical was watched 26 million times for 43.3 million hours. It brings the movie's total number of views since its release in June to 210.5 million giving it a total viewing time of 351 million hours. Based on both its number of views and hours viewed, KPop Demon Hunters is now closing in on 2021's Red Notice as the most-watched Netflix movie of all time. The heist comedy starring Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson has been viewed 230.9 million times for 454.2 million hours and statistics from Netflix show how quickly the demon hunters are catching up with it. Since 2023 Netflix has distributed detailed weekly data about its top ten titles showing the number of times and hours they were watched. Before 2023, the streamer only released the latter information and, thanks to its star power, Red Notice debuted with a staggering 148.7 million hours as shown in the chart below. As this report explained, Red Notice was far from a critical success so the length of time it was watched fell sharply over the following weeks. By its third week it was only being watched around a third as much as it was when it debuted. It fell a further 50% in its fourth week before slipping below 20 million hours where it remained until the ninth week after its release which was the last one when the viewing time of the movie was in the double-digit millions of hours. It only just scraped through as it was watched for 11.1 million hours. In contrast, KPop Demon Hunters debuted to just 15.4 million hours but its viewing time increased almost three fold the following week as the movie became a viral sensation. Unlike Red Notice, the amount of time it has been watched has increased since then and the latest data from Netflix shows that in its ninth week it was viewed for 43.3 million hours. It is almost four times more than the amount Red Notice was watched at the same point after release despite having a slight disadvantage as it is 15.3% shorter than its rival. If it keeps up its performance it will hit the top spot in just over two weeks. The latest data shows a slight increase in weekly viewing time so the demon hunters are showing no sign of slowing down.

How ESPN Aims to Prop Up Disney+

When ESPN launches its streaming app Aug. 21, bundling is a big part of the strategy. Disney is planning to use the new sports content to help drive subscribers to sign up for its streaming bundle, which includes the new ESPN app, Disney+ and Hulu, in the hopes of bringing more frequent engagement to its streaming services and cutting down on churn. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Entertainment Tonight' Star Kevin Frazier Teams With Stephen A. Smith at Straight Shooter Media U.S. Open 2025 Livestream: Here's How to Watch the Grand Slam Tennis Tournament Online WNBA on Sling TV: How to Watch New York Liberty vs. Las Vegas Aces Live Online Amid declining cable viewership, ESPN (priced alone at $29.99 monthly) is also being asked to appeal to fans by bundling with other sports services. Ahead of launch, ESPN had been experimenting with placing content within the Disney+ app, with the original shows SC+, a daily SportsCenter spinoff, and Vibe Check, a female-led studio program, to see whether there is crossover appeal for sports content with the core Disney+ audience, which skews younger and more female than the typical ESPN audience and has a larger user base than ESPN+. In doing so, execs found that subscribers were coming back to Disney+ more frequently, an important goal post for the streamer; that offered proof that there could be an appetite for a bundle that brought sports to fans of general entertainment and vice versa. The goal is now to bring in those subscribers, as well as the new, incoming sports fans, to the streaming bundle, which will be priced at launch at what it costs for ESPN alone, a promotional $29.99. ESPN Unlimited will be available inside the Disney+ platform, as will Hulu, which the company has found increases engagement for that content as compared to when subscribers have to watch on a separate app. 'Bundle subscribers are among the most engaged. They churn the least, they watch the most, and they're the most satisfied subscribers we have,' Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+, tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview on August 15. The Disney+ audience (128 million subscribers) is viewed as additive to the main audience for the new ESPN app, which is namely sports fans who aren't already subscribed to ESPN through cable, satellite or digital subs. 'We're not looking to lure people from existing environments who are perfectly happy getting ESPN through cable, satellite or digital subscription,' says Burke Magnus, ESPN's president of content. The ESPN app will include all of ESPN's live sports and studio shows as well as fantasy sports products, betting information, docs and more. The company signed a deal to bring WWE's premium live events, including WrestleMania, SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble, to the service in the U.S. starting next year and has an expanded rights deal with the NFL, including the NFL Network, which will be integrated into the streaming app. The preference is to keep subscribers within the Disney family. But subscribers who are looking for more sports content will also have the option this fall to bundle with the new Fox One Sports app ($39.99), and Magnus notes that kind of thing could just be the start. 'I just think there will be more of those,' he says, 'whether those are other media or sports media products from other media entities or whether those are other existing products that are specific to sports. A lot of leagues, for example, and teams, have their own streaming products that could be packaged and bundled with ESPN.' All of this comes after the collapse of Venu, the sports-focused streaming service founded by Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox that dissolved in January after legal threats from competitors. Magnus adds, 'Either the time wasn't right or the circumstances weren't right, but it certainly opened up the aperture for us, and I think others, to imagine a world where this kind of thing, whether it's all of ESPN or co-bundling in the streaming environment would be possible.'
