Where do you see the market headed now that the Q1 earnings season is almost over? Do valuations look comfortable given the recent consolidation and pockets of good performance?
Ashish Gupta:
The last six to seven months have been interesting for the markets, with multiple macro events playing out domestically and globally. However, their full impact on underlying economic data is yet to be seen. The next two months will be crucial. In the US, jobs and inflation data will reflect the effect of tariff increases since the start of the year. The US dollar has also depreciated about 10% year-to-date, which has driven rallies in most emerging and European markets—up nearly 20–30%. India has underperformed, but if
dollar weakness
continues, flows to India should turn positive.

Earnings growth, however, has been lacklustre at around 7–8%. The expectation is that the second half will see an improvement, driven by a good monsoon, better liquidity, and lower rates. As the earnings base in the second half is lower, we could see better numbers emerging.
Do you see dips as a buying opportunity? How should investors strategise, especially with SIP flows at an all-time high of Rs 28,464 crore? Which sectors are you watching?
Ashish Gupta:
Domestic flows remain very strong, but FII flows are volatile. From April to June, we saw $4 billion of inflows, followed by $4 billion of outflows in the last 45 days. Strong domestic inflows have been offset by significant supply in the market from both secondary share sales and the IPO pipeline—around $21–22 billion in the last three months.
We are focusing on companies and sectors with better earnings growth. We are overweight on NBFCs, expecting better margins and growth from RBI policy support and liquidity. We also like consumer discretionary segments such as retail and quick commerce, and remain overweight on select capital goods and power sector plays.

You have reduced your overweight stance on automobiles. Given recent optimism around festive demand and some valuation corrections, has your view changed?
Ashish Gupta:
Passenger vehicle demand remains soft, though two-wheeler demand has picked up. We hold positions in a few companies gaining market share, but overall, the sector lacks signs of a broad demand revival. Inventory levels are already high ahead of the festive season. On the auto component side, demand from major international OEMs, especially in Europe, has also moderated. Hence, we have reduced exposure in both OEMs and components.
How do you see the overall consumption story, especially discretionary and high-end categories versus staples?
Ashish Gupta:
Consumption can be divided into three buckets—mass (staples/FMCG), middle-income (urban), and high-end (travel, leisure, luxury retail). High-end consumption has done well for the last three years and continues to remain strong. In recent quarters, rural consumption has picked up, driven by strong agricultural income, and is now outperforming urban consumption. However, middle-income consumption remains weak, and we are watching the festive season closely for signs of revival.
What could be the next big trigger for the market?
Ashish Gupta:
So, it simply has to be better earnings growth. So, as we have seen over the last 12-month nominal GDP growth slow down from double digit to single digit, it has kind of (10:51) been down on corporate topline growth and corporate earnings. So, if I look at corporate earnings growth is only 7-8%, it is not an exciting enough market for foreign investors. So, what we need to do is demonstrate going back into double digit earnings growth. Yes, there are select sectors in the economy, select companies that are still growing earnings about 15-20%, but that is only about 23-24% of the total cohort. So, we need a broader pick up in earnings growth.

If India was counting on a clear and positive outcome from the Alaska summit to avert the additional 25 per cent US tariff on Indian exports, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin did not deliver — at least not by last night. The failure to reach an agreement leaves a dark cloud of uncertainty over India's trade negotiations with Washington. Despite a warm welcome from President Trump and President Putin's friendly references to America, the two leaders could not bridge their differences on Ukraine. At their joint press appearance, Putin spoke of an important 'agreement' emerging from the talks, while Trump claimed 'considerable progress' but confirmed there was no deal. 'There are just a very few [sticking points] left,' Trump said. 'Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant — but we have a very good chance of getting there,' he added, without identifying the issues. He promised to brief Ukrainian and European leaders on his discussions with Putin. Putin, for his part, expressed hope that US allies would not undermine any understandings reached with Trump. His emphasis remained on improving bilateral ties with Washington while holding firm to Russia's core positions on the war. He noted that Russia and the US are neighbours across the Northern Pacific, evoked their wartime cooperation during the Second World War, and highlighted the potential for broad commercial and strategic engagement. Trump has invested significant political capital in building a partnership with Moscow. Yet deep divisions persist within his own administration and across the Atlantic on the terms of peace and reconciliation with Russia. European allies remain wary of any settlement that might reward Moscow's aggression, while Trump has been pushing for a breakthrough that he can claim as a foreign policy success. India's immediate concern lies in the punitive measures Trump has tied to his Ukraine strategy. As part of the effort to pressure Putin into accepting a ceasefire, Washington announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports — explicitly linked to Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. Since the 2022 invasion, India has become a major buyer of discounted Russian crude, a move that has improved its energy security but drawn sharp criticism from the West. The US administration argues that targeting India, among other large importers, will cut into Moscow's revenues and push it toward compromise in Ukraine. On the eve of the summit, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that more tariffs could follow if no peace deal emerged. He urged Europe, which imports refined petroleum products from India, to join Washington in imposing severe sanctions on countries still trading extensively with Russia. Meanwhile, a major bill moving through Congress would authorise the president to impose tariffs of up to 500 per cent on states helping sustain Moscow's war economy. As Delhi awaits clarity on the summit's outcome, the trajectory of the Ukraine talks, and the next steps in Washington, one conclusion is hard to avoid: India's appetite for cheap Russian oil over the last three years has bound it, however indirectly and unwittingly, to the geopolitics of war and peace in Ukraine. The Modi government now faces a difficult calculation — how much political and economic cost it is prepared to bear to maintain the Russian oil connection. Express View on PM Modi's Independence Day speech: Hope, not fear
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, his 12th in a row, was delivered against the backdrop of a global economy roiled by unpredictability, turmoil and upheaval. PM Modi did not name him but Donald Trump and the tariff regime the US President has unleashed, lurked, between the lines, as both presence and shadow. For the most part, the PM spoke of how India needs to enliven the 'Make in India' and 'Vocal for Local' mantras, and install self-reliance at the heart of the country's development strategy and growth model. The message was: In times when the Trump tariff regime is impacting exports, and when disruptions in global supply chains are threatening to squeeze imports, India must focus on strengthening the domestic economy by pursuing the path of self-sufficiency or 'aatmanirbharta'. PM Modi reminded the nation of India's proven 'samarthya' or capability — when it took the lead in manufacturing the coronavirus vaccine, not only for itself, but also for the world; and more recently, when, powered by indigenous weapon systems, it conducted Operation Sindoor. This is not the first time that PM Modi has spoken of the need to Make in India, or extolled the virtues of aatmanirbharta. But this I-day speech was remarkable for the urgency with which it sought to connect the dots from Atmanirbhar Bharat to Viksit Bharat and national security, framing it as a matter not merely of import-export but as a test of a nation's very 'aatma samman' or self-respect: 'Hum nahin banayenge? Hum nirbhar rahenge? (Why will we remain dependent on others)?' He exhorted the young and the entrepreneurs, the scientists and the private sector, to come forward and fill the gaps with ideas and innovations — to make India's own fertiliser and semiconductor, and to be self-reliant in clean energy and critical minerals. The government, he said, would encourage and enable them through the next generation of reforms, for which he announced a special task force. But as much as the PM sought to exhort and energise, and even as he tapped into his countrymen and women's ambitions and optimism — he announced a special Diwali bonanza of GST reform, a Rs 1 lakh crore Rozgar Yojana for the young, invoked the symbolism of naari shakti, space start-ups and Shubhanshu Shukla's odyssey — he also painted a gathering spectre. Illegal immigrants or 'ghuspaithiye', he said, are snatching Indians' jobs, taking away land from tribal populations, endangering India's 'behan-beti' or women. His government would, therefore, set up a high powered Demography Mission. While illegal immigration is a resonant issue that is becoming bigger across the world, riding on the back of nationalist politics and populist movements, the PM's highlighting of it has a disquieting domestic backdrop — of growing incidents of violence against Bengali-speaking migrants in states, and the ongoing controversy over voters' lists. The BJP's defeat in the Jharkhand assembly election may have pointed to the limits of 'illegal immigration' as an electoral plank, but in a diverse country, it is still an issue that is fraught, one that can propel a politics of distrust and fear. The PM's playing up of the dark motif of the 'ghuspaithiya', coupled with his tribute to the RSS from the ramparts of Red Fort, showed an unmistakable ideological layering of his message. For the nation, they frame the challenge that lies ahead: Of finding a way forward that sidesteps the fear and embraces the hope.

US President Donald Trump hailed his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as 'extremely productive' but confirmed that no final agreement had been reached to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking in Anchorage, Alaska, after the talks, Trump said there was 'a very good chance' of bridging the remaining differences but insisted he would consult Nato allies and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before committing to any deal. 'There's no deal until there's a deal,' Trump remarked, highlighting that while many points had been agreed, one significant sticking point remained unresolved. Putin, who addressed the event first, described the discussions as 'constructive' and suggested they had covered a broad agenda. He mentioned potential cooperation in trade, Arctic development, and space exploration, alongside talks on Ukraine. The Russian leader, however, maintained maximalist territorial demands and refused to halt military operations, confident in his forces' slow but steady battlefield advances. Invitation to Moscow Putin closed the event by inviting Trump to Moscow for their next meeting. The US president responded cautiously, but did not rule out the prospect. 'I'll get a little heat on that one,' Trump said with a smile, 'but I could see it possibly happening.' While the summit ended without questions from reporters, its tone, a blend of cordiality, strategic posturing, and withheld detail, left both optimism and apprehension in its wake.
