Fire damages shop, dental clinic in Semporna
Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: Firefighters at the scene. - Pic by JBPM SEMPORNA: A fire broke out at a row of shop lots housing a home improvement outlet in Jalan Seri Melor Tinagayan here on Sunday evening. The alarm was raised at 5.53pm, and fire engines from the Semporna Fire and Rescue Station arrived within minutes to find the two-storey building well alight. The blaze destroyed about 90 per cent of the hardware store and also spread to a dental clinic on the upper floor, which was damaged by around 50 per cent. Firefighters faced challenges due to low water pressure from hydrants, but support from Sabah Water Department tankers enabled the team to continue operations using multiple water sources. A total of 49 personnel from various agencies, including the police, Sabah Electricity, and the Civil Defence Force, were involved in the operation, and no casualties were reported. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah's perfect plans, perfectly forgotten
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Fiona V Loijon, Anita Limjoon, Paul Canigea Pungut Text Size: IDS teams crisscrossed the districts, convening village dialogues, stakeholder workshops and council meetings to surface real community priorities in agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, health and education. SABAH has seen decades of planning. Year after year, plan upon plan, workshop upon workshop. It is all just planning! planning! planning! And in the end pending! After all that meticulous mapping, what have been done? Are there any positive outcome? Are those blueprints or strategic planning ever being executed? The story begins with an outpouring of ideas. The State ministries and federal agencies have drafted regional structure plans that promised balanced growth across urban centres and rural hinterlands. Local land-use schemes charted zoning for agriculture, commerce and conservation. Detailed landscape proposals envisioned green corridors along our rivers and mangrove buffers on our coasts. Most ambitiously of all, the Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS) spearheaded a Strategic District Development Plan that wove every agency's initiative as well as the needs and wants of the grassroot people into one coherent roadmap. Electric vehicle for Melalap fire-fighting
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Jamawi (left) in front of the electric fire-fighting vehicle. Tenom: A mini electric fire-fighting vehicle is set to boost emergency response capacity in the Melalap State constituency once it is stationed specifically for the area. The vehicle, estimated to cost RM45,000, is a contribution from Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) Chairman, Datuk Jamawi Jaffar. Jamawi said the electric vehicle, which operates with zero carbon emissions, is not only environmentally friendly but also equipped with basic fire-fighting tools and an emergency alert system, making it suitable for use in village and rural areas. 'The mini fire engine unit is being prepared for the Melalap Volunteer Firefighting Team, which is currently awaiting approval from the top management of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). 'Future members of the volunteer team will be trained by JBPM on how to operate the vehicle and carry out rescue efforts,' he said. The mini fire engine is expected to improve response time for volunteer or community fire teams in dealing with house fires, minor forest fires, and other emergencies in areas that are hard to access by main fire stations. The initiative also highlights the importance of rural community safety, in line with green development efforts and grassroots welfare. Jamawi, who is also Melalap Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Division Chief, said the mini fire engine has been tested by JBPM Tenom and is equipped with appropriate safety features.
