Centre approves ₹9,814 crore infra push with airport, ring road projects in Rajasthan, Odisha
'The new Kota-Bundi airport, estimated at ₹ 1,507 crore, will be developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 440 hectares of land already transferred by the Rajasthan government,' said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister for information and broadcasting, while elaborating about the decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting.
As per Vaishnaw, the facility, with a 3,200-metre runway, seven aircraft bays, and a 20,000-square-metre terminal building, is designed to handle two million domestic and international passengers annually and will be completed in two years.
It will be capable of operating A-321-type aircraft and will also cater to cargo traffic, giving a boost to Kota's industrial base and its position as India's leading coaching hub. The new facility will replace the existing Kota airport, which has limited capacity due to its small size and surrounding urbanization.
'The expansion of aviation infrastructure in smaller industrial hubs is critical to ensuring balanced regional growth,' Vaishnaw said, noting that the new airport could also help attract fresh investments in manufacturing and services in the region.
India's aviation network has expanded sharply, with the number of operational airports rising from 74 in 2014 to 162 in 2025. Annual passenger traffic has more than doubled from 16.8 crore to 41.2 crore over the same period, the minister said.
The second project is the ₹ 8,307 crore Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha. Extending 110.9 km, the six-lane access-controlled corridor will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model. It aims to divert commercial traffic from the congested Rameshwar-Tangi stretch, which passes through Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
The alignment will integrate with three national highways and one state highway, connecting 10 economic nodes, including a Special Economic Zone, a mega food park, textile and pharma clusters and four social nodes covering aspirational and tribal districts. The project is expected to generate nearly 1.7 crore person-days of direct and indirect employment.
'This is the largest project in Odisha. It will give a fillip to logistics and connectivity,' he said.
Both projects are part of the government's strategy to accelerate infrastructure development in eastern and northern India, balancing the growth seen in western and southern regions.

Kerala chit fund couple get anticipatory bail in Rs 40-crore cheating case in Bengaluru
A couple from Kerala who are accused of cheating nearly 600 investors of over Rs 40 crore through a chit fund and finance business they operated in east Bengaluru were granted anticipatory bail on Thursday by the principal sessions court in the Karnataka capital. Tomy A Varghese, 57, and his wife Shini Tomy, 52, are alleged to have fled to Kenya after cheating investors through the A&A Chit Funds and Finance firm they had been operating in east Bengaluru since 2005. The couple moved the Karnataka High Court seeking the quashing of the case on July 15 and approached the sessions court for bail on July 18. The court of the principal sessions judge in Bengaluru granted bail to the couple after hearing their counsel and the state prosecutor. A detailed order is expected to be released soon. The couple's plea in the high court, which also sought a stay on the investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police in the case, is due for hearing next week. The couple are alleged to have fled to Kenya on July 3, two days before the cheating case was registered against them at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station in east Bengaluru. Investigations have shown they sold all their property – an apartment and a car – for half the price before fleeing the country, the police said after the case was registered. A complaint of cheating was filed against the couple by a senior citizen who lost Rs 70 lakh in the alleged chit scam and several others also filed similar petitions. Dozens of investors have approached the Ramamurthy Nagar police with complaints of being defrauded by A&A Chit Funds and Finance. The police registered the FIR on July 5 on the basis of the complaint filed by P T Savio, 64, a Ramamurthy Nagar resident who has alleged that he has been cheated out of Rs 70 lakh by the couple. Hundreds lured with promise of 6-14% interest rates Initial police investigations found that 368 investors in A&A Chit Funds and Finance had been cheated out of Rs 39.66 crore. 'The accused have been running A&A Chit Fund and Finance company for about 20 years, by promising interest rates ranging from 6 to 14 per cent,' the police said. According to Savio's police complaint, the Tomy couple had gathered hundreds of small and large investors in the firm with the promise of high returns. The funds deposited by the investors were being collected in the bank accounts of the firm and the private accounts of the couple, says the police complaint. 'They have collected Rs 70 lakh from me and my family and several crores from others. When we visited the office of the company, we found it closed and the couple were missing. Their phones were also switched off,' read the complaint. The case was registered under section 4 of the Chit Funds Act 1982, section 21 of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Ordinance 2019; and sections 318 and 316 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal breach of trust. The Government later transferred the case to the CID. The police have issued lookout circulars for the couple after learning that they had left the country.

Land acquisition for UKP 3: Govt. has to pay ₹2 lakh crore compensation
A whopping amount of over ₹2 lakh crore has to be disbursed as compensation for the acquisition of 1.33 lakh acres to be acquired for Upper Krishna Project-3 if an average is calculated as per the additional compensation awards given by the courts, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said on Thursday. Responding to a question from BJP member P.H. Poojar, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the government has gone on an appeal against additional compensation awarded by the court as government will have to shell out ₹66,563 crores to 29,566 acres which has been acquired already. The government has estimated compensation of ₹2.01 lakh crores to be provided for acquiring 1,33,867 acres based on average calculation of additional compensation awarded by the courts. In his written reply, Mr. Shivakumar said that 28,407 cases were pending in court seeking higher compensation for land being acquired for UKP-3. He said that there was a nexus with advocates involved in this. However, Mr. Poojar took exception to this statement and said that the additional compensation has been given by court due to the delay in process of awarding compensation. The Deputy Chief Minister said that a proposal was being finalised in the Cabinet to solve the problem, and that he has even sought transfer the land acquisition process from Revenue Department to Irrigation Department. 'Some of the court awards have been in the range of ₹8 crores to ₹10 crore. Even in Bengaluru, such high rates do not prevail.' He also appealed to the elected representatives to convince the farmers for enhanced compensation and consent to acquisition, and the government would come up with a formula. 'Farmers are unhappy with the Cabinet sub-committee's decision during the Basavaraj Bommai government. Convince the farmers and we will come up with a plan,' he said.
