India face anxious wait over scan results on Rishabh Pant's right foot

Leader Live23-07-2025
Pant brought trademark chaos after India had slipped from 94 without loss to 140 for three at Emirates Old Trafford, slog sweeping Jofra Archer for four and belting Brydon Carse for a straight six.
But he inside-edged a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes' yorker flush on to his boot, which he removed to reveal a foot that became increasingly swollen and bruised as he received lengthy treatment.

Pant, who has made 462 runs at 77 in this series, retired hurt on 37 and was taken off the field in agony on a golf buggy, leaving his availability for the rest of the Test in major doubt.
He went for scans and Sai Sudharsan, who top-scored with 61 in India's 264 for four and was at the other end when Pant was injured, admitted the tourists are waiting with baited breath on the outcome.
'He was in a lot of pain,' Sudharsan said. 'He's gone for scans and we'll get to know overnight.
'He was batting really well here. We miss a batter if he doesn't come back again, so it would definitely have consequences. We'll try to give our best and bat long so that we negotiate that loss.'
England spinner Liam Dawson, who marked his first Test appearance in eight years by taking the prize wicket of India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for 58, believes Pant's situation is bleak.
'Our thoughts are with him, it didn't look a great injury so I hope he's alright,' Dawson said. 'He's obviously a very good player but I can't see him taking much more part in this game.'
Dawson admitted he thought his hopes of an England recall had vanished before Shoaib Bashir's Test summer was ended by a finger injury he sustained in last week's nail-biting win at Lord's.
The 35-year-old claimed figures of one for 45 from 15 overs, having Jaiswal caught at slip for his first Test wicket in 2,929 days since dismissing ex-South Africa batter Hashim Amla at Trent Bridge.
'I've said to a few people that the age I'm at, I thought Test cricket was gone,' Dawson said. 'To be back involved is really cool and I've got to try and enjoy each day that I get.
'I do feel I'm a better bowler than what I was a few years ago. I was nervous. I'd not played for a number of years. The biggest thing for me is I understood what to expect whereas before, I didn't.
'Hopefully I'll get a couple more. It's one wicket, I've done nothing special.'
However, Ashes 2005-winning captain Michael Vaughan has seen enough to convince him Dawson, rather than Bashir, should be England's frontline spinner for this winter's blockbuster Ashes series in Australia.
It is Dawson's all-round abilities – he has more than 10,000 first-class runs with 18 hundreds and is regarded as a fine fielder – that makes him such an attractive option for Vaughan.
'He is a good cricketer,' Vaughan told the BBC'S Test Match Special. 'He has been around the blocks. He knows his game. You could see that from the first ball he bowled.
'I think England are a better team with him in the side. On the pitches we are seeing in the UK and potentially Australia, I want to see a batting line-up that is absolutely packed.
'He has the all-round package and for this England side, and going forward to Australia, they are stronger with this style of cricketer in it.'

Former Celtic star reveals he almost turned pro in another sport

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Celtic star Joe Hart has revealed how close he came to becoming a professional in another sport altogether. The shot-stopper, who retired last year following a spell at the Hoops, enjoyed cricket and was a handy left-arm seamer in his day. 3 Joe Hart revealed he could have become a cricketer Credit: Alamy Live News 3 He was part of the Worcestershire academy Credit: Alamy Live News 3 Hart instead chose football and had a successful 21-year career Credit: Getty His talent saw him picked up by the Worcestershire academy but Hart decided football would be a better career path. Hart, 38, was also part of the Shrewsbury Town set-up in his youth and began to be selected for the matchday squad before he had even sat his GCSEs. The former keeper recently appeared on BBC Test Match Special where he revealed his cricketing past. He said: "I played at a good level. I was part of the Worcestershire academy when that first started to come about. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL NO SESK APPEAL Why Man Utd should scrap Sesko transfer pursuit to fix a MUCH bigger problem "But I was always playing a lot of football as well and this was the time when cricket wasn't just in the summer it was becoming an all-year round type of sport so it was difficult." Hart was asked if someone sat him down to discuss his options as a teenager, but he revealed the decision to pursue football was one he made, and really it was a no brainer. He continued: "I was a lot further down the line (in football). I was playing for Shrewsbury Town in League Two and I was involved with the first-team from 14, 15-years-old. "They had more of a structure, so when you turn 16 you sign schoolboy forms and you almost train professionally. "You're a professional footballer from 16 so that pathway was there. They were very encouraging, I had been on the bench when 14/15. "I just felt there was more of a pathway there for me football wise and cricket's a really difficult sport to be in. You have to be at a top top level just to make a living in the game. I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead "And I don't think I was that good. I was decent, like many people out there, but was I going to go to the next level? I don't know. "And in football it felt like I had a lot of people who knew a lot about me telling me I need to stay in this sport because you've got a chance." Hart once showed off his talents in a game of cricket with his former Tottenham team-mates in 2020, and he bowled Harry Kane. And one of his former pals at Worcestershire, Jack Shantry, believes he would have made it as a cricketer. The former Worcestershire bowler said: "He could have gone further, definitely. "This isn't with any faux humility, but he was a better cricketer than me at the same age. If he wanted to, he could have made it." Ed Foster, another teammate at club level and with Worcestershire's academy, adds: "If he'd have carried on and had the glut of cricket that you can get if you want it from 17 through to 19 or 20, I'm sure he would probably have been in and around the England Under-19 setup – and who knows where he would have gone from there? "He had all the raw materials, and where he's got to in football shows he's got enough between his ears to be able to put his physical aspects to good use. "I'm sure he would have given himself an opportunity, for sure." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Benjamin Sesko's Man Utd or Newcastle call shouldn't boil down to manager 'reservations'

An ex-Premier League chairman has urged Benjamin Sesko to sign for Newcastle United over Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, despite having reservations over Magpies boss Eddie Howe in the past Simon Jordan has told Benjamin Sesko to head to St James' Park over Old Trafford, stating the RB Leipzig striker will have "less scrutiny" playing under Eddie Howe than Ruben Amorim. The former Crystal Palace chairman admits he had "reservations in the past" over the Newcastle manager, but he now believes the Carabao Cup winners are the right team for Sesko to thrive in. ‌ Newcastle and Manchester United are locked in a transfer battle to sign the 22-year-old. The two sides have submitted big bids to bring Sesko to their respective clubs. ‌ The Magpies struck first with a rejected offer before coming back with an improved proposal worth £70million plus add-ons. However, the Red Devils have lodged a bid of their own worth £65.1m plus a further £8.7m in add-ons, and a final decision from the Slovenian international looks to be imminent. ‌ Jordan appeared on talkSPORT to discuss the choice Sesko faces, admitting that if money weren't an issue, then Newcastle should be his prime destination. "If I were in his shoes, if the economics of the deal were that I wasn't being compromised financially by going to Newcastle over Manchester United, I think it's a great move," Jordan said, before he went on to discuss the former Bournemouth boss. "I think Eddie Howe is a brilliant manager – I had my reservations about him in the past – I've had conversations already. I like him very much, and I think he's done a brilliant job. "So I would be looking at Newcastle rather than Man United." Jordan went on to note that everything Sesko does would be looked at under a microscope when playing under Amorim at United, whereas he would have more freedom to grow while developing under Howe. Jordan added: "I think because Newcastle comes with expectation, but doesn't come with the same pressure that Man United comes from. ‌ "Whilst people focus on Newcastle, they focus on it because Newcastle makes a lot of noise, because it's a very passionate football club and the fans are very motivated by it. It doesn't have the day-to-day scrutiny that Man United has. "It doesn't matter what happens, you can fart in the corridor of Man United – that's heard around the world. It's not the same at Newcastle." ‌ United are reportedly confident that Sesko will be heading to the north west of England to add to their attacking line, having secured the signatures of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and ex-Wolves man Matheus Cunha already this summer. Sesko, though, is considered a ready replacement at Newcastle for Alexander Isak, whose form has understandably caught the attention of Premier League champions Liverpool. The Reds have already submitted a £110m bid for the Swede – which has been rejected – but Howe looks destined to sell the wantaway star should the Magpies first land Sesko. The Red Devils are in yet another period of transition. In November 2024, they appointed former Sporting CP boss Amorim to help the club compete back in the European places of the Premier League, but another disappointing campaign last season saw them ultimately finish in 15th and without a trophy. ‌ Meanwhile, Newcastle are on the up after securing their first piece of silverware in 70 years in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. They finished fifth last year in the Premier League and are set to compete in the Champions League once again this season. Meanwhile, United will be without European football this campaign after losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. All of these things may well factor into Sesko's decision to pick black and white or Manchester red, with both sets of fans eagerly awaiting to see his choice made soon.
