FORMER Celtic star Joe Hart has revealed how close he came to becoming a professional in another sport altogether.
The shot-stopper, who retired last year following a spell at the Hoops, enjoyed cricket and was a handy left-arm seamer in his day.

His talent saw him picked up by the Worcestershire academy but Hart decided football would be a better career path.
Hart, 38, was also part of the Shrewsbury Town set-up in his youth and began to be selected for the matchday squad before he had even sat his GCSEs.
The former keeper recently appeared on BBC Test Match Special where he revealed his cricketing past.
He said: "I played at a good level. I was part of the Worcestershire academy when that first started to come about.

"But I was always playing a lot of football as well and this was the time when cricket wasn't just in the summer it was becoming an all-year round type of sport so it was difficult."
Hart was asked if someone sat him down to discuss his options as a teenager, but he revealed the decision to pursue football was one he made, and really it was a no brainer.
He continued: "I was a lot further down the line (in football). I was playing for Shrewsbury Town in League Two and I was involved with the first-team from 14, 15-years-old.
"They had more of a structure, so when you turn 16 you sign schoolboy forms and you almost train professionally.
"You're a professional footballer from 16 so that pathway was there. They were very encouraging, I had been on the bench when 14/15.
"I just felt there was more of a pathway there for me football wise and cricket's a really difficult sport to be in. You have to be at a top top level just to make a living in the game.

"And I don't think I was that good. I was decent, like many people out there, but was I going to go to the next level? I don't know.
"And in football it felt like I had a lot of people who knew a lot about me telling me I need to stay in this sport because you've got a chance."
Hart once showed off his talents in a game of cricket with his former Tottenham team-mates in 2020, and he bowled Harry Kane.
And one of his former pals at Worcestershire, Jack Shantry, believes he would have made it as a cricketer.
The former Worcestershire bowler said: "He could have gone further, definitely.
"This isn't with any faux humility, but he was a better cricketer than me at the same age. If he wanted to, he could have made it."
Ed Foster, another teammate at club level and with Worcestershire's academy, adds: "If he'd have carried on and had the glut of cricket that you can get if you want it from 17 through to 19 or 20, I'm sure he would probably have been in and around the England Under-19 setup – and who knows where he would have gone from there?
"He had all the raw materials, and where he's got to in football shows he's got enough between his ears to be able to put his physical aspects to good use.
"I'm sure he would have given himself an opportunity, for sure."

Slovan Bratislava boss suffers touchline meltdown as hopes of landing jackpot Celtic clash left looking bleak

Vladimir Weiss is in hot water with UEFA after a furious outburst with the officials Slovan Bratislava's chances of setting up a Champions League play-off showdown with Celtic are already looking bleak after their third round first leg qualifying defeat to Kairat Almaty. ‌ And the Slovakian league champions will now have to try and overturn the deficit next week without their manager on the touchline after he saw red for berating the match officials. ‌ Despite playing the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Rahim Ibrahim was sent off, Slovan looked set to claim a valuable 0-0 draw in Kazakhstan until the last minute of the game, where Dastan Satpaev stepped up to bag the winner from 12 yards after Kairat were awarded a penalty kick. ‌ And boss Vladimir Weiss Snr - who's son and former Rangers midfielder Vladimir Weiss Jr captains his team - couldn't hide his fury at the performance of the officials. The livid Czech coach stormed onto the pitch to give match referee Serdar Gozubuyuk a mouthful, to which the Turkish whistler quickly responded by giving Weiss a second yellow card. The veteran boss reacted by marching towards the fourth official on the touchline to let rip with another tirade before he was ushered away by a member of his coaching team. UEFA regulations dictate that Weiss will now serve a one-game touchline ban in the return fixture in Bratislava next Tuesday, with his side needing to score at least once without reply to force extra-time. However, the severity of his dismissal could see the Champions League' s governing body hand out further punishment which could prevent Weiss leading his team from the side-line if they were to overturn the deficit and progress to the play-off round. ‌ Brendan Rodgers' Hoops await the winners of the tie later this month for a place in the money-spinning league phase of Europe's most prestigious competition. The Hoops will play host at Parkhead in the first leg on August 19/20 with the the return fixture away from home then comes six days later. The side that loses over two legs will drop into the revamped group section of the Europa League, giving them a guarantee of continental football until next January at the earliest. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Celtic page and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. here.

Serie A rising star ‘wanted by Celtic' but Premiership champions ‘unwilling to meet asking price'

The Scottish Premiership champions have just completed the signing of Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan but Brendan Rodgers will still be keen to add to his squad. But reports in Italy are claiming the Hoops are interested in another defender, one with international experience too. Adam Obert played 23 times for Cagliari last season across all competitions and has picked up 23 caps for the Slovakia national team since making his debut in 2022. The 22-year-old has a contract with the Islanders until 2029, having only signed an extension back in January. According to L'Unione Sarda, Celtic are keen on the player but the two clubs have been unable to agree on a fee. They report that the Hoops would need to increase their offer in order for them to consider a sale. The exact figure being debated is unknown but Obert is valued at £2.6million (3million euros). Obert is a left-sided centre-back who can also operate at left-back. Celtic may see him as an upgrade on Liam Scales, who has been similarly used in both positions. New signing Simpson-Pusey is right-sided and has primarily been used in the centre of defence whilst coming through at City. I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead Obert came through the ranks at Zbrojovka Brno in the Czech Republic before moving to Sampdoria's academy in 2018. After three years with the Genoa-based side, he moved to Sardinia with Cagliari. He has since made 77 league appearances, playing a key role in their latest promotion-winning campaign in Serie B (2022-23). Celtic see Champions League play-off opponents showdown settled by late penalty drama but tie still in the balance

Hoops await the winners in the final qualification hurdle to get into Europe's premier competition Celtic could be heading to Kazakhstan in the Champions League play-off after Kairat Almaty bagged a dramatic winner in their third round qualifier with Slovan Bratislava. ‌ Kazakh outfit Kairat welcomed the Slovakian side to Central Stadium and eventually found the breakthrough against the visitors, who went down to 10 men through Rahim Ibrahim's red card with 25 minutes still left on the clock. ‌ The decisive goal arrived in injury time, with Kairat's Dastan Satpaev netting from the penalty spot. ‌ Satpaev then thought he had nabbed a crucial second only for VAR to overturn his effort for offside. Former Hoops transfer target David Strelec lined up for the away team but was replaced in the second half along with one-time Rangers ' loanee Vladimir Weiss. The Almaty side dominated proceedings with 17 shots on goal but now they still have work to do if they want to set up a showdown with Celtic. Brendan Rodgers ' side await the victors in the final qualification hurdle later this month, with the first leg taking place at Parkhead on August 20. The return fixture away from home then comes six days later, with the loser over two legs dropping into the revamped group stage of the Europa League. ‌ The Hoops have opted not to postpone a Premiership match in-between the crunch play-off clash. Celtic are scheduled to face Livingston at home on August 23 but a new policy put forward by the SPFL to help Scottish clubs bidding to qualify for Europe would have allowed them to request a postponement the league fixture. However, Celts have decided against the move, with Rodgers confident his squad can come through the week with flying colours. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our Celtic page and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season.
